Hey bud you must have served me on many occasions. Do you remember Jonah the bouncer? Used to open the fire exit doors with the heads of whoever he was throwing out. Went there one night and the guy in front of me going in (I knew him but can’t remember his name) gave a shotgun to the girl checking people in and said ‘can you look after this for me till chucking out time?’ Jonah just stood there, smiled and shook his head in disbelief.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 13, 2021 10:33 amWorked behind the bar at Buccaneers in Haslingden when it first opened in 1971. I was a full time student and home for a month. Really enjoyed it. Did a full 12 hour shift once when the owners' daughter had her wedding reception there in the afternoon .
The venue mentioned that was just behind the cathedral in Manchester was called the Jungfrau in the 60's when I was at school.down there. Tony Wilson, who was a couple of years ahead of me at school, was a frequent visitor.

Yes, I remember Jonah. At the bottom of the steps just where you paid to get in. As I said, only worked there for a month(April 71) but took every shift available including that 12 hour one that involved the wedding reception in the afternoon. Pennine bitter and Super Sam mild available and a couple of sham boats to sit in to drink it adding authenticity to the scene! Owners were from Bury, called Smith, I think.houseboy wrote: ↑Sun Nov 14, 2021 9:33 amHey bud you must have served me on many occasions. Do you remember Jonah the bouncer? Great for a night out when it first opened but then later only really filled up after the pubs closed. Obviously still there and when I occasionally pass it I wonder what the room is used for now.

The land that time forgot has had a few over the years that I haven't spotted on this brilliant thread.
Sett End and the Red Parrot next door to it at Shadsworth.
Manhattan Heights. Mecca.
I'm surprised huncoatclaret hasn't mentioned his Wednesday's at the 'grab a granny night' at Martholme Grange?

Aah the Walkerville. Spent many a Friday and Saturday nights in there in the late 70’s when stationed at Catterick Garrison. It was indeed a rough hole.AfloatinClaret wrote: ↑Fri Nov 12, 2021 5:03 pmI wonder if ColburnClaret remembers the Walkerville pub & nightclub? That was a dangerous ****-hole to visit!
Re: Long gone nightclubs
Everything for everyone as a teenager in mid to late 70's especially living in Brierfield, so many pubs and a fight a night at the weekends (to watch or participate whatever your liking), then on to Nelson when pubs shut if didn't get a lock in somewhere, either to el Trop if wanted a guaranteed pull, Trax if wanted another fight, Sands or the Springfield if wanted a more relaxed night and a dance...

A “ club “ I never thought I’d hear of again . They used to have strippers on Sunday upstairs as well , I well remember as an 17/18 yr old being a bit shocked at the “ whip round shows “ when on occasion a few older guys had a whip round for the stripper and gave her on on the dance floor . Mid -late 80’s that would be .
Also ,rarely seen folk literally thrown down stairs ( and I’ve worked doors ) but seen a good few get chucked down the Queens stairs . They sort of joined the room like a cellar haha. Happy days

Upstairs above the Zoo in Nelson was good for a while if you were into post-punk alternative stuff. Trax wasn't too bad either on a Saturday night, if, like me, you wanted a late night beer without having to endure the usual nightclub disco dross.

There was a big Welsh bouncer on the door who seemed to take a perverse pleasure in
turning folk away (no, we weren't p1ssed). "Not tonight lads, try t'Cats".
But when you got in it was a really good night, loads of women, only
thing was the ale was awful, J Lees or something, some nights it was undrinkable.
(But we still drank it)

Burnley was cracking night in the late 80’s to lateish 90’s , incredibly busy . We’d start at sidewalk , Yates’s , White Lion , Swan , Big Window , Smacks etc . Then you had clubs from Cats/Ritzy, Savannahs , Zanzibar , later “mean cat daddy’s” , seem to remember one above an Italian restaurant? and another ( not Zanzibar ) sort of downstairs . Martholm grange was ok for pulling , Hawthorns , one in Nelson that was maybe an old theatre /cinema .
