Brownhill clearly a more solid choice

I think he would be a fantastic signing for us, particularly if we could agree a loan deal (so as to not be stuck with him if relegated) with obligation to purchase in the summer if we stay up. I just struggle to see how we could attract him if the other two are linked - depends on what state Newcastle are in when we get to January I suppose. They might have all the money in the world, but if they're ten points from safety (for example), they will struggle to attract anyone.

If Newcastle are in then we’ve no chance really, they’ll likely pay his wages in full.

So we're not signing him then.

Out of those three, we are probably seventh choice.

I live in hope, be a great signing.

Agree he’s the type of player we’re short of, however, we’ve not much of a chance once the bigger clubs come in. He’d be better at free kicks as well rather than Brownhill whom I’ve never seen get a free kick outside the box on target, he always seems to sky them.

For me, I suspect if they offer him £80k a week he seems the type who wouldn’t be bothered about a year in the championship, let’s face it i’d be amazed if they didn’t walk the championship again

Is this the same Ross Barkley who was offered to us before the last transfer window ended and we decided to walk away ?

Reputed to be on £110k at Chelsea.
Can't see him taking a pay cut when he's still got 18mths left on his contract.

He’d be a fabulous signing if we went 3-5-2. Doesn’t work hard enough defensively to play in a MF 2.
Pope
Collins..Tarks..Mee
Roberts(Lowton)..Brownhill..Barkley..Westwood.. McNeil(Taylor)
Wood..Cornet
The bracketed players are dependent on level of opposition.

I don't know much about him,
does he have any defensive qualities for central midfield?

If any of our targets are also wanted by Newcastle we are better off just stopping any further conversations, not taking in to account the fee, but wages alone they can afford anything they want, and most footballers seem to take a mercenary approach to wages rather than club.

Yes the same one. Who Chelsea wanted to offload with his full wages being paid by us. That's why we turned him down then and that is why we won't be signing him in January.

I'm sure McNeil, Westwood or Cornet would be better at free kicks then Brownhill as well, not sure why he's taking them!

It's always 3 clubs that are interested in any player.

3 sets of hits on the article and helps to put pressure on clubs to buy if they think others are interested.

£110k is :x for a bit-part player, and after the Drinkwater fiasco we'd be well advised to avoid going down the big name loanee route again.

Never scored one and yet he continues to take them. Really frustrates me. I’d rather we put a cross in than keep putting it high and wide.

I’m a big fan of a downhill but stick to strengths and let someone else take them.

I am not a fan of loans generally but with Cornet off for a while, there’s a place for someone who can play off Wood and I’d rather we don’t chance a downturn in form given our league position.

To be fair, he’s a better player than Drinkwater and would add something we don’t have - a playmaker.

That said, I think it’s unlikely we’ll get him if others are interested so really hope Alan Pace has a few other players lined up for January (& not Championship players this window).

Maybe Cornet is bobbins at free kicks, but when you have a player in the kind of form where everything he touches ends up in the back of the net, he should have been given that FK against Palace.

They were my thoughts Rileybobs. Definitely worth a try given his form, but if not, Dwight or Westy. I’d say both are more likely to work the keeper from what I’ve seen.

I’m trying not to mention the side-footed effort straight at the keeper in the second half as well 🤐

I shouted so loudly at that my dog ran off and cowered in the bathroom. Brownhill does that every time the ball drops to him. Side foot straight at the keeper. Either place it in the corner or just welly it man!

I do like Brownhill but not as a free kick taker or lurking on the edge from corners.

Yep, likewise. We all remember the Vydra chance because it came at the end but that was nearly as good and so just as frustrating for me.

It does seem to be a pattern of attempting that curling effort that makes an easy save for the keeper. I’d be telling players to put their laces through it outside of the box as it takes a lot to beat a PL keeper from that distance.

That’s why I don’t really think there’s a chance now. If we’d been really interested, you’d assume we’d have taken the option in the summer when Christie fell through. And I imagine if we turned the option down then, then he has no reason to go out of his way to sign for us now if Newcastle and Leeds are interested.

If he's not good enough for Chelsea then he's not good enough for us.

End of story as far as I'm concerned.
