Roberts in for Saturday

Post by Woodleyclaret » Thu Dec 02, 2021 9:00 am

Play him as a right sided attacking player replacing JBG
Get at Newcastle early as their defence is poor Roberts can double up with Lowts on Saint Maximum if needed and his long throw will create chances for Chris to convert
We need a goal quickly then press high.
Three points is the minimum requirement

If last night was not an indicator Roberts is knowhere near starting then I don’t know what is.

He chose Lennon over Roberts to come on in the wide birth

Has anyone really seen much of Roberts to know how versatile he is?

2 year ago he played 12 games in goal and kept 11 clean sheets, then the fans wanted to see him centre mid so he played there for 8 games scored 4 and won all 8. Later they wanted to see him upfront and he played a further 9 games and scored 22 goals winning the golden boot for the division.

I’m not a big Lennon fan but he chose a winger over a full back to come on at right wing.

He played 4 different players in the RM birth yesterday. If that doesn’t show Roberts is not going to start in that slot then I don’t know what does

Il refer you to the OP where he suggested he should start as Rm. I am saying he will never start there based on yesterday

Robert’s needs to keep his head down & be ready to take his chances when they come along. Which they will.

JBG was poor last night. As were Wood & Cornet. The whole team missed Westwood but Wolves are also a very good side. No need for any changes in my opinion.

Quite sensible really given he is a defender.

Maybe Dyche thought it was a “must win game” and didn’t want to bring another defender on when we were not winning?

Lennon came on to try and win the game, last night.
Against St. Maximin, who seems to have our number, Roberts RM is a decent call.

You are getting confused with 'Roy of the Rovers'.

It would help to achieve that if he touched the ball, can't remembering him doing it last night!

Nobody is suggesting RB. The suggestion is WR in front of Lowton to double up on the speed machine. Although the damage he has done to us previously has all been straight down the middle.

He needs to bide his time like Collins is having to, Tarky had to, Pope etc etc. He'll get a chance when Lowton's form warrants it, picks up an injury or suspension. If he's good enough he'll stay in the team.

Much as we defended brilliantly at times, never did we play like a "must win game"

We presumably brought Lennon on to 'tighten up defensively' and 'see out the game'; those are certainly the reasons SD's given previously when he's introduced Lennon for the last few minutes. I would accept that Lennon's perhaps a better option than Cornet in that regard, but would argue that as a 'versatile right back', Connor Roberts could've done a better job than either and as CR is our future - unless he gets fed up and does a Gibson - giving him some game time is a proactive move toward that future arriving sooner rather than later..

Jbg is a poor player these days, always playing it safe, doesn't really offer anything sadly is best days are behind him,

Connor Roberts has been excellent for Wales playing wide right attacking when needed and good dropping back. Why the negativity towards him playing.I said infront of Lowts not instead of.

I thought they'd put Joelinton higher up recently with ASM on the left? Either way, it's Brownhill who i'm expecting to manage him when he comes inside and causes trouble. When he's out on the left I would think it'd be Lowton and JBG. JBG is defensively very astute, especially compared to McNeill and Cornet (and that's despite Cornet having played full back). Yes he was really poor yesterday, but I think he's been OK this season in general. I'm not sure what extra Roberts gives us for this weekend

Joelinton been playing on the left in the past few for Howe. I'd like to see Cornet wide left and Dwight right, both can swap wings if required in the game. Vydra to come in alongside Wood. Don't think Roberts should be starting RM when we have those options available.

Roberts is clearly underrated by many as a utility player
Wales are considering him as a possible No 10 in their next game
Looking forward to that - 5th Feb away to Ireland
Watch out Cornet - you are going to have to up your game

Much as I have been campaigning for Roberts to play some time at wide right midfield , it just is not going to happen. He is clearly seen as our long term RB. With one defeat in 8 SD is not going to change the shape. However for Saturday for me I would rest Wood who seems ineffective at present and play Rodriguez and Vydra up front (Jay did well last night), with Wood coming on during the game, but also having Dwight and Cornet as the wide men.

Alternatively 5 across midfield of Cornet, Brownhill, Cork, Westwood McNeil, in which case Wood up front

Lennon runs around, keeps the shape and that's it. Never takes anyone on, rarely passes forwards and his best was a decade ago. Roberts must be capable of keeping the shape and from his performances for Wales, he is obviously better going forward. Makes sense for him to replace JBG later in the game

So potentially losing him for Feb/March for the whole six nations contest.

I think it’s wonderful that we have so many experts Sean can turn to at any given moment. How ace must it be to be on his contract and yet have the backing of people who can see a player over you tube, what Sean himself is missing; sees everyday in training, professional opinions and expert reports daily, and his own ‘you tube’ videos. Oh, Burnley IS Wonderful.

The irony of the long throw is that when we tried it last night it created one of Wolves' better opportunities.

Long throws are very anti - Dyche.

TBH our throw-ins, long or short, are not great.
