Playing a diamond midfield

Post by Quickenthetempo » Thu Dec 02, 2021 1:53 pm

Now, we know our midfield are always going to struggle being outnumbered, so we try and avoid playing in the central midfield area if we can.
So would a diamond shaped midfield work better for us, especially with our long ball style?

The forwards need the midfield to support for them to do well and the defence need the midfield to offer cover just in front of them. Our central 2 aren't quick enough or good enough to offer both.
The diamond, playing direct football would bypass the opposition midfield and allow our attacking midfielder in to fight for any 2nd balls around the box or to ghost in unmarked for shooting opportunities. He wouldn't have to sprint 30 yards every time just to catch up with play. Same with the defensive midfielder who should always be in a decent position.
It certainly works on the left side with Dwight there, as he can play anywhere on a pitch and will enjoy Charlie Taylor going on the outside of him, the RH might be a bit trickier unless Roberts comes in to get down the flank so anyone can play the midfield role.
We often play with a tucked in midfield, so no difference there.

I just think we would have a central midfielder where we always want them and not chasing the game.
