No

Whether we like it or not, we've been underinvesting in the squad for at least two seasons, and as a result we've got some pretty glaring issues if we get anymore than one injury in certain areas

Pace and Co will lose more than that if we go down and they know as well as we all do that we need both reinforcements and to move some players on
Totally agree but the doom monger in me says if we spend millions in January, then we still go down we really could be in the poop financially. I think Maxwell has been the exeption rather than the rule how he's basically hit the ground running with his performances.

In my own humble opinion, and that's all it is as I'm tight :D , I'd have prefered 2/3 loans maybe just to try and get us over the line then re build again in the summer..

Oh, if we go down, then we'll have to do some pretty drastic squad changes

All you have to do is look at Swansea to see how they effectively have to rebuild the squad every season as the parachute money drops off, and that of course makes it almost impossible to build a squad that can get promoted back

We could risk going straight back up, but if it doesn't work, the financial consequences could be even worse

I agree with this. Another big issue is whether we're able to bring in reinforcements at the start of January this time or if we'll have to wait until the end of the month

There's an argument to say if we are going to get relegated then this season would be the one to do it, as this fan-led review / independent regulator thing looks set to really tear into parachute payments.

Thing is, you just have to look at Derby to see the potential issues if that tactic doesn't work, and there are lots more examples as well

Ideally, the 1st of Jan

Realistically, the last week of Jan

I can sense this developing into a long thread along the lines of a Shakespeare play 'Much Ado about nothing'. I will be most surprised if we sign anyone in January.

If the reports on Fulgini and Hill are accurate it suggests a fair amount of work has gone into those deals already - which would hopefully mean early rather than late January - as one of the most common reasons for delay as far as we are concerned would appear to be players/agents weighing up alternative offers

It seems a fairly reasonable assumption. I would be shocked now if we don’t see at least two more arrivals in January.

I see some posters are still confusing the new owners with the old ones. Different kettle of fish now and I’m certain we will make signings in January.

In respect of “what if we go down”, we will still have players with significant sell on value especially if the new additions are anything like Cornet.

The financial question is certainly an interesting one.

However at this point we desperately require reinforcements, it’s up to Pace to balance the risk

Of course, it's quite likely that someone like Fulgini, if he came in, would in effect be seen as a replacement for McNeil, who is realistically likely to be sold next summer for significantly more than the outlay on Fulgini.

It makes complete sense to try and bring in that replacement in January so as to assist in the transition, same logic as signing Collins last summer. So it's not a given that the club see this as unfunded outlay that stretches our financial position.

I don't know Fulgini but as per my past posts on ALK, we will be active and if the rumour is true; we will go all out for him as per Cornet. I'm told we're after three players but not necessarily all in the same window and one is a back up option.
I questioned regards Barkley and I got a kind of reaction that he was the 'back up'/'last option'.
A surprise, but very welcome name our fans would be pleased with popped up as an option to loan/buy but he asked me not to mention it. Suffice to say he is a holding, defensive midfielder. I can't say any more.
Gareth Barry.... :D

Claretspice makes an excellent point - the last window actually looked and felt like considered succession planning. For all the criticism of failing to bring in a CM the owners were trying to make up a vast amount of lost ground

If the players allegedly linked in January are anywhere near accurate that's a huge step in the right direction. The aim has to be to bring in sufficient quality to ensure we are a PL club going into 2022/23 which will hopefully give us enough room for manoeuvre to address the under-investment in previous windows and properly refresh the squad

Surely (if McNeil is to be sold) his replacement would be Cornet.
Adding a CM (Fulgini?) would only bring the numbers back to what they are at present.
In addition we lose Tarkowski.

That doesn't sound like rebuilding or improving very much to me.
We would still need a, cover at CM and LW and a CB.

This isn't a link or a rumour - I assume it's valid under the 'discussion' section of this thread - but Christian Eriksen is due to have his contract cancelled at Inter since you can't play in Italy with a pacemaker.

I'm sure there'll be bigger clubs in for him, but you never know...

I think McNeil is finding his level with us, still fairly young but I don’t think he is technically good enough to play for anyone above a Palace/Southampton. Also very one dimensional, we are about right for him IMO

I cannot see anyone being too keen to sign McNeil on current form, no matter of the perceived potential. Burnley will want serious money and managers and clubs have to maximise their PR to keep fans happy with ‘the latest thing’

Didn’t Mancini come from Angers seconds for a small fee?

Can see a deal plus makeweight there.

Be VERY careful what you say about McNeil on this board.
