Wood/Cornet partnership

Post by jojomk1 » Thu Dec 02, 2021 4:32 pm

Obviously Max is still relatively new to the club and therefore still having to learn the "Dyche" way in terms of individual and team expectations
Whilst not proportioning any individual blame to either, this pairing is looking confused a fair amount of the time, to me
The current form of Wood is off but this new pairing could be the reason - he's maybe not sure either what Max will do when he has the ball or where Max will go if Woody has the ball
The same applies to Max - some fantastic goals but is there so much else over 90 mins - the potential is certainly there but just not coming through at this moment on a regular enough basis
Certainly not last night, and I was in agreement with CT last week that I also thought he should have been taken off at half time in the Palace game
Yes, he then scores the wonder goal !!!
We are getting to the stage of the season where wins are needed and our front two (whoever they are) need to be on the same wavelength with Jay and Vydra being a classic example at Chelsea
So, the last couple of games see Wood subbed first and Jay brought on.
Then, if Vydra comes on, Cornet goes wide left and Dwight changes to wide right
The change in overall balance increases and to our detriment I think
McNeil and Taylor have an excellent understanding of each others play. Dwight moves inside, the full back usually follows, and Taylor gets down the line putting in some excellent crosses. Max tends to stay out wide which doesn't leave the room for Taylor to move into, plus we then lose any practised defensive shape on both wide sides
Wood up front with Jay/Vydra brings understanding to their roles and confidence to the rest of the guys that they know where to hit the forward balls
Max wide right will certainly offer far more than JBG
Max can make the difference, but be careful about changing round the rest of the team set up just to accommodate him - and no I don't mean drop him

He has all the attributes to make it work up front, but we need to give him service and that wasn’t available last night. He has looked better on the wing because he gets the ball more with more space and driving forwards, but the first half at Southampton the defensive side wasn’t there. Other than that, he’s been fine defensively but it seems dyche likes his qualities as a forward.

Vydra continues to disappoint whenever I watch him. He has scored a couple of excellent goals but all too rarely and he often spurns decent opportunities. I don't see him convincing Dyche that he should be regular starter!

One thing that I noticed from last night is that the ball went to Cornet from the back far more than Wood, and its supposed to be the other way around

Cornet should be right on the shoulder of the last defender, ready for the flick on

I think Vydra's best work is done off the ball.
Stretches defences when he runs the channels, shame his finishing is not PL standard.

I’d prefer Dwight floating behind Wood and Vydra with Comet overloading from the wing.

Wood up front with Vydra. As mentioned above Vydra stretches the defence and Wood generally plays better with him. It doesn’t matter if Vydra isn’t scoring as long as Wood is. Cornet on the wing. Cornet isn’t as used to the system and isn’t as good with back to goal. We need Cornet on the ball more which won’t happen with him playing up top with Wood and our current midfield.

Wood and Cornet were too far apart on many occasions last night and it made ball retention nigh on impossible, it was a basic tweak which wasn't acted upon

Wolves have one of the best defensive records in the league don’t they?
Not the best game to question the Wood/ Cornet partnership was it?
I expect these two players to be among those players first on the team sheet all season.
I’d go so far as saying I think they will be the difference between staying up or being relegated.
As such when they don’t have good games it’s a case of moving on to the next game.

Wood and the ball were too far apart, and not just last night either.

I grant you that the supply is poor but he just isn't firing on all cylinders and we are
basically playing with 10 men most of the time IMO.

Max learning the Dyche way will have consequences.

Dwight being an example.

He looked brilliant at Leicester, and came back well for defensive duties-then he pulled his hamstring. He was wide left that day

Personally I’d like to see Jay with Cornet as though he doesn’t roughhouse like Wood , he plays it well on the deck and is a far better all round footballer which Cornet looks like he needs ,either running off him or supplying the pass

THIS!

When we had our decent spell last season and pulled clear of danger it was when Vydra/Wood were paired together, and this was also when we played our best footy of the entire season, yes I get that Vydra's goal haul isn't great, but he seems to be the perfect foil for Wood.

And Cornet out wide, along with Vydra making runs in behind will hopefully allow us to stretch the play, and therefore create space for the likes of Wood and possibly Dwight to take advantage of, even Westwood has shown that he can pop up with goals from midfield running from deep.

The best we've played this season was the 1st 45 at Leicester when all 4 of those mentioned linked up to great effect.

Vydra’s scoring record is not good enough but, what he brings to the team is nuisance value; he keeps defenders on their toes and creates room for other players in a way none of our forwards do regularly enough. To put it simply he is a better foil for Wood and our midfield, he stretches play.

I didn't watch but Cornet, for me in our current system/availability would be more suited to a flexible floating role alongside McNeil. He's no striker. Playing in a mobile rotating system. With our squad and Cornet's ability I'd go 4-5-1 with it's own subtle nuances and let McNeil and Cornet roam.

He has obviously scored some amazing goals when we were seriously lacking any goals. However it is a shame that he didn't work out as a wide player giving us the supply and creativity from Left and right with Cornet and Dwight which in turn would keep teams guessing, and probably free up space for the wings and forwards, where as now they just double mark Dwight, and pack the midfield. That said I don't see the goals coming from anywhere else so I do understand Dyche keeping him up top.

Cornet and Wood were up against three very good centre halves against Wolves and it’s not really that surprising that they struggled to find space for attempts on goal.
Newcastle’s central defence is much weaker and there will be more space and opportunities to score.
Play Maxwel on the left and Wood on the right (yes, these ‘minor’ details are important) and we’ll score a couple tomorrow.
