Re: David Coleman visits Burnley
I'm not sure I've ever seen the whole of it.
I remember Tony Livesey contacting me a few years ago. He was doing a piece for the BBC and wanted to be in the same place as Coleman was at the start. He asked me where it was, he isn't old enough to remember it like that.

nothing much has changed, they were still portraying us as honest toilers and unexpectedly successful, despite our tiny town team being blanketed in smog and fag smoke.

Re: David Coleman visits Burnley
Funny to see David Coleman so young & so obviously (Ivy league educated) ... I grew up admiring him for his seemingly photographic memory on the Grandstand Teleprinter e.g. ( that's Grimsby's first score draw in 20 matches & their first 2-2 draw for three seasons) etc.
He was everywhere!........Olympics, Athletics ........can't think of a better one ..ever!

Re: David Coleman visits Burnley
Interesting sociology point. As Coleman progressed in his career, he obviously learned to drop that preformed BBC accent and go with his own generic English accent (originally from Stockport) to be more broadly appealing (1 nil!!)

Re: David Coleman visits Burnley
So where was the opening piece filmed? 6 years before I was born so like Livesey I don’t remember it like that. Somewhere around where the Spirit of Sport all weather pitch is now would be my estimate. Hard with the dead ground forshortening the shot.
Re: David Coleman visits Burnley
Great clip thanks for sharing. Love the opening piece with the Turf looming in the background, floodlights just about visible in the smog. Glorious.

Two things.
Seems a really similar ethos now. Great how Dyche has recreated that One Club mentality.
Secondly, Jimmy Macs kick ups. Ha ha ha. Funny how World Class players back then look so wooden and uncomfortable (I say this with the greatest respect to a legend

Re: David Coleman visits Burnley
Excellent clip that I've never seen before.
A lot of people probably remember David doing Question of Sport, but I wonder how many remember him doing it in Burnley?
I can't remember exactly when it was, but Skipper's cars hosted David for a version of Q of S at their premises on Eastern Avenue. I was there, as I then lived at Duke Bar. Great night.

Brilliant…thanks for posting.
Some of today’s commentators would do well to learn from Coleman. He once said that the art of good commentating was to know when to speak and when to keep silent.

Interesting comments from Bob Lord about the manager being allowed to manage and from McKilroy about club loyalty given what happened to McKilroy subsequently.

First for me as well seeing that. All those wonderful memories come flowing back about the era when I lived in black and white.

And of course his ‘Coleman-balls’. Fine examples of when to speak, when to keep quite and when to hope the ground would swallow you up. Who can forget such gems as:Suratclaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 11:16 amBrilliant…thanks for posting.

He is 31 this year. Last year he was thirty.

The ball has broken fifty-fifty for Keegan.
There’s going to be a real ding dong when the bell goes.
And last but very definitely not least:
There is a fine line between serendipity and stalking.
Ah yes...a fine commentator and a wonderful example of when to speak and when to perhaps just think a little before you do.

I don't know for sure but i think part way up Brunshaw Hill. Based upon the visible end terrace and floodlight position.claret wizard wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 9:20 amSo where was the opening piece filmed? 6 years before I was born so like Livesey I don’t remember it like that.
