Chris Wood being subbed

Amazed there isn’t a thread in this already. Sorry if I’ve missed it.

I’ve not seen a player react like that after being subbed under SD. Looked like he was put firmly in his place.

Whilst I like to see the desire to play, watching it back it looked very out of character and pretty embarrassing.

Wonder if there has been a fine or any internal discussion/ punishment.

A great little cameo drama. All positive … player wants to play and believes in himself, manager firmly in control.

Read on the Wolves forum that they enjoyed seeing his reaction.

Dyche was asked about it and basically said he enjoys it when players are ****** off with being subbed and there would be no ramifications for Wood at all.

If you're not upset about being subbed in a 0-0 ........we don't want you!

The only surprise was that he wasn’t hooked at HT. He’s a streak player normally so I hope this isn’t the start of a bad streak or we are in deep doodoos.

Just not his night. I would imagine both player and manager have forgotten about it now. Hopefully he’ll bounce back today.

For me Wood hasn’t been good enough this season. It’s not his lack of goals, but effort and concentration - pressing at half pace, not running the channels and creating space like he has done previously, loose passes and headers, etc.

By contrast, JRod did everything at full pace, fully committed, sliding in for tackles, etc.

I certainly wouldn’t drop Wood but I’m glad a full 90 minutes isn’t a given in that form.

Missed the altercation though. Would love to see a video of that

There’s also the fact that he is needed on Saturday and so probably best for him to not play the full 90 with a crucial game 2 and a half days later.

But collecting a needless booking (which on another day may have verged on a red) is not what we need either.

He needs to recognise that he has been over-rewarded by the managers faith and loyalty to him. Cannot remember when he has never started when fit, even after long runs of poor performance. I was at the game and said to my friend at half time that Cornet needed to come off, as just like Wood he was ineffective, particularly when in good positions. I thought Vydra would come on to partner Wood. It was the right decision to hook off Wood-Rodriguez looked more lively and connected to the rest of the team. Have to say Wood looked sluggish and slow and seemed to have gained weight

Agreed. It was a bad tackle and arguably a red. Not suggesting that we want Wood (or anyone) putting those in. Just that when the midfield is struggling and the other team is on top, you need more from your forwards than pressing at half pace, misdirecting knock downs, misplacing passes and generally failing to hold the ball up at all. JRod did the above much better when he came on.

Wood, when he’s on a good run of form, is an asset and a real handful for opposition defenders.

Wood, when he’s on a poor run of form, and he has more than his share of such spells, doesn’t contribute nearly enough.

He’s started this season very slowly. Hopefully he will hit one of his form patches soon because we need his goals.

Wood needs to grow up. He was poor, it happens. Get subbed, get over it, move on. The collective effort is more important than one guys’ ego.

I think this sums him up perfectly.

He’s certainly due a good run of form soon, and we tend to pick up some results when he hits one of his purple patches.

Have to disagree a little with that rcc….

Couple of really good balls into Wood and on another day he’d have had at least two goals.

He looks an absolute mile off the pace at the moment tho….

We're in a relegation battle and you wanted to see Cornet, our leading goalscorer, taken off at HT. I don't recall Maxwel being too effective in the 1st half against Palace ,then one chance and we're back level. Unbelievable Jeff!

I imagine Chris Wood saying "but, I always score against Wolves..." and Sean Dyche responding "I said let's get a hat-trick again like last time in the first half."

Like all strikers, indeed all players, confidence is the key.

We've seen it with Ashley Barnes, Jay Rod, Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy... the list is endless. He just needs to hit the back of the net and the goals will flow again. Hopefully, that will start today ;)

He had a poor game for sure, but was still much more effective than Cornet. It was a tough call to make but Cornet has popped up with wonder goals out of nothing so I can see Dyche’s reasoning for subbing Wood first. That said, I can see Wood’s frustration because his poor performance was largely down to the awful lack of service.

I'd be pretty ****** off being replaced by someone as ineffective as Rodriguez too, Wood was poor though.

One goal against Palarse doesn’t mean he’s turned his form around. For most of the season he’s been a shadow of what he can be. I’m absolutely sure you know that. Tell me you know that.

3 in about 13 (that’s a guess- not checked) is most certainly NOT form.

He’s there to score goals, but you can forgive that if the all round play is good. Holding it up, bringing in advancing midfielders, winning headers and knocking it on to his partner, laying it out wide and using his movement to create space for himself and others for when the cross comes in…. All things he hasn’t been very good at either since the start of the season.

I like Wood, really I do, but he’s been a shadow of his former self. Maybe he needs a couple of goals to boost his confidence, but from watching him, his body language is shocking and he currently looks incapable of playing himself back to form. He looks leggy and almost disinterested. I’m at a loss to know how to change that, but it needs to change and change quick.

At the same stage last season he'd got two goals, considered past it, no longer good enough for the Prem and shouldn't be first choice.

Heard it all before but let's rinse and repeat the same comments every single season he plays for us.

He's scores around 1 in 3 in the PL, so 3 in 13 isn't that far away from his usual standard.

Not sure if you were at the game. I appreciate he is a match winner, but 7 or 8 examples that night all in the first half where he could not do the very simple things, and you need to consider a change at times, and then Cornet starts afresh next game, ensuring his confidence is not damaged. THats why at some point SD has subbed him in every game.Even Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Kane-I could go on, get subbed. NOT SO UNBELIEVABLE JEFF

Thats the beauty of Wood. He goes through 3 or games looking slow and playing poorly, then he gets some real opportunist goal.

Well let’s hope he gets himself on the score sheet today. He has to start, I’m not advocating he’s benched, but if his contribution is to be goals, he needs to start scoring regularly, because his other contributions are currently very poor. That’s what is really worrying me most, not his lack of goals.

I might have a bet on him as first goal scorer, should get decent odds.

I think I've said it before, but my Leeds supporting pal warned me he tends to perform for 50% of a season. Always a threat, but his hold up and link up play is very poor during the his 50 % downtime.

Half of the problem is that his game isnt holding up the ball like Vokes used to do, he needs to run onto quality balls like Lowtons on the turf.

His control is pretty poor but hes a good finisher, just play through balls to him but maybe we dont have the players for that yet in midfield.

He has been poor this season generally and needs to up his game or be given a rest for being overplayed by every man and his dog since the Olympics.

Wood has looked poor in some games this season, however he's still our most likely source of goals after Cornet, and let's be honest neither Jay Rod or Vydra have shown that they can come close to matching Wood's goal ratio, so it's understandable why SD persists with our main goal threat even when he's not in great touch.

Despite all the criticism Wood will probably hit double figures again this season, and we'd better hope that he does, as I can't see many goals from the rest of the squad TBH.

He should’ve been hooked at half time for misplacing a 5 yard pass when we were on a counter attack after a nice knock on from Cornet.

He needs to rediscover his form from the back end of last season and quickly.

Yes I was there on Wednesday and today and they're ridiculous comparisons.
You can't compare our squad with a Man Utd or spurs squad. Ronaldo or Kane would never or never have been subbed if Utd or Spurs were losing at half time.
Dyche has only taken Cornet off when he wants to shut up shop.
As for taking him off at half time to "ensure his confidence is not damaged" have another think about that quote of yours.
