MIdfield really woeful today, and Wood looks like a man ready to retire!
We were on top until Cornet went off - tells a story.
Well done Nathan Collins though! He looks up for the fight

We played OK until they scored. We had had the best chances and they looked shaky if a bit of a concern in the break. Once they went in front it totally lifted them and our heads dropped - took till the last 25 before we started to drive back into it

Good point. Shows you the 90 minutes I had. As long as the team don’t show up a week late I don’t mind
Probably still a chance to get out of it though, we’re not far behind Watford.

Squad needs a serious overhaul, fortunately lots are out of contract this summer so the opportunity is there. I’d like to see a clear out and get some young and hungry players in for the championship next year.
Sadly I can see some of the OOC players offered deals.
We need to reset, it is the previous transfer windows when we didn’t strengthen that has cost us. A drop to the championship and reset might not be all that bad.

Trouble is we can't really afford to be relegated now. We desperately need to shift the momentum this season.

You’d not believe how far away any of our youngsters are from premier league football, we simply don’t have them, most wouldn’t make league 2

Wow today isn’t great and by all accounts not a great performance in the second half, but anyone expecting anything other than a defeat today just doesn’t follow football and the football gods. It was written in the stars that eddies and Newcastles first win would be against us. I have no doubt we will win the next game.

We're still in with a chance, but given our lack of victories this season, Watford look like the only other side we might finish above, and that's assuming we can somehow finish above both Newcastle & Norwich which is by no means a given.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 5:11 pmGood point. Anything we can get against West Ham has to be regarded as a bonus, but the Watford game has to be 3 points now, otherwise we're going to leave ourselves too much to do in the 2nd half of the campaign.

This has been obvious for a couple of seasons, we are either not capable of bringing young players through or we don't have the raw material to start with.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 5:12 pmYou’d not believe how far away any of our youngsters are from premier league football, we simply don’t have them, most wouldn’t make league 2
This is why we have 4 or 5 over thirties sitting on our first team bench.

No. We played pretty well first half. The response from 45 to 70 was the poor thing. I think after today we probably will see Vyds reduced to 3rd striker behind Jay.burnley007 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 5:15 pmI wish I hadn't had to sit through that. Vydra is a professional who trains four days a week.Iloveyoubrady wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 5:05 pmCornet going off made an unbelievable difference. We were all over them. Then we gifted them a goal and proceeded to lump it up to wood to not win anything.
I also used to think vyds was a very good player, but he needs games to get goals, and he’s not going to get games unless he gets goals, so he won’t play.
He gets into good positions but he is a poor finisher ss seen in the last two.or three games.

The biggest disappointment for me was that we didn't seem to give it a real good go in the second half.

It is a pity. His positional play and movement deserve better.
I'm sure goalscoring is a confidence thing; who can give him that confidence, and how?

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
The situation we are in has been coming for years. We have a midfield who are utterly devoid of pace, creativity, the ability to beat a man and the ability to retain the ball or move forwards. None of Cork, Brownhill, Westwood or JBG would even make the squad at any other side in our division, never mind start week in week out.
We are reaping the years of under investment in the area that needed it most in order to make the cash flow and balance sheet more attractive to potential buyers. Sadly when they lift the bonnet on their purchase they find the engine is knackered and they can't afford a new one in order to compete. I think we all know how situations like this end....
Still think these are exciting times Paul Waine?

How many at home is it now this calendar year? 2 so far?
Over-reaction, we're having a laugh!! This was the worst of the lot when you take into account the opposition. Newcastle were absolute garbage & their performance was as bad as ours. But Pope gifted them a goal (always punch when coming out so far into a crowd of people, for exactly that reason of the goal) and they were desperate to hold on and did. They were lucky they came up against us who were just as bad as them!

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
TBH I think largely the added years have finally caught up with Jack and Ash (Barnes) but that puts a bigger burden on everyone else and our standing still last season - we simply cut the costs to maximise the attractiveness - has left the new owners a lot to do in a short space.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 5:30 pmThe situation we are in has been coming for years. JBG was pretty good today - was McNeil who was poor. We are struggling for confidence and calmness in the final 3rd and that's down to a failure to upgrade in that area for 2 years

We'll be lucky if the floodlights are still standing by September 2022. Bardsley will probably get a new contract though.

I am going to nick a quote from Tuchel and fit it to us nobody gets relegated after getting beat today and nobody stays up after winning. I expect both these teams to stay up come May maybe by the skin of our teeth though!!

Re: Newcastle United v Burnley match thread
I agree with you about Vydra, he is a confidence player and does indeed need games to get into his stride. If you looked at today he did see a lot of the ball but it just wasn’t sticking to him and that glaring miss possibly happened because the ball didn’t come down quick enough for him to get over it and it looked too far in front of him.Iloveyoubrady wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 5:05 pmCornet going off made an unbelievable difference. I also used to think vyds was a very good player, but he needs games to get goals, and he’s not going to get games unless he gets goals, so he won’t play.
We were indeed poor today, however if McNeil had just chipped that one into the box at the death instead of shooting from a really tight angle we had three players queuing up. We could have stole a point from a game in which we deserved nothing really against a poor Newcastle team.
