Suprise......
Just for the historians on here, and for those that dont know or remember its 80 years ago today that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, a lot of good men died that day, but a bit like the film version, the Japanese were supposed to have said that they had awoken a sleeping giant....and the INNOCENT Japanese people paid a hefty price, resulting as we are aware, of the dropping of the atomic bombs....war is not good, i tried to post this earlier today but my internet connection kept going down sorry.

Historians won’t need reminding and not sure why the rest of us need to be. I’m sure we’re all aware of the horrors of war.

Thanks for posting BurnleyMickSouth
We should never forget what happened and why we fought for what we fought.

Re: Suprise......
Course, we should also never forget that the total shambles that was the defence of Malaya and Singapore was partly due to an extremely racist view of what the Japanese could and couldn't do

I highly recommend Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series 'Supernova in the East'
Most people know about feudal Japan, Samurai etc. And also WWII era the Japanese Empire etc, but how did such a small nation go from one to the other; a seemingly medieval, isolationist island to a world superpower in such a short space of time?

The allies created the Second World War themselves due to the treatment of some countries after the First World War.

Not so in the East though, considering all Japan did was capture some very lightly held German islands and the enclave of Tsingtao, they were very handsomely rewarded, even if some of the Islands they got were League of Nations mandates

Re: Suprise......
Reply to JACKMIGGINS, you say that why should we be reminded of wars, the answer is that YOU would not be doing what your doing now, if it had not been for the RAF and the Battle of Britain, 21 miles from Dover to Calias, a small strip of water between us and the Germans walking in to the UK, if it had not been for the RAF, and that strip of water then today you would be wearing jackboots and a swastika on your arm, i find your comments unnecessary never forget ANY war ! ........its just not right, while im at it lets forget about six million jews that died in a WAR should we forget about them as well. Just so as you DONT forget Jack that was world war two.

Thanks, and I agree with your sentiments. Recent generations know all of this, but future generations will regard it as history and won’t appreciate our feelings if they are ‘rammed down their throats’. We must, instead, calmly extol the virtues of human, global community and hope that the majority will not, again, follow in the footsteps of the deranged minority.

I once asked a Japanese friend of mine this very question.CombatClaret wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 8:17 pmI highly recommend Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series 'Supernova in the East'

His reply was that the vast majority of the population took amphetamines and worked round the clock.

Re: Suprise......
Certainly the last bit is true!
I'm only really up to Japanese industrial expansion from the mid 1850s to 1941 in regards to the Japanese Navy, but its an astonishing turn around in a manufacturing base in a very short period of time
Fun fact - the only surviving pre-dreadnought in the world (IJN Mikasa) was built in Barrow in Furness and is now a museum ship in Japan
Re: Suprise......
I've just returned from visiting a relatives grave in a British war cemetary in northern France.jackmiggins wrote: ↑Tue Dec 07, 2021 6:37 pmHistorians won’t need reminding and not sure why the rest of us need to be. I’m sure we’re all aware of the horrors of war.
It was very moving reading the headstones of young British men buried in that cemetary, many of them 17, 18, 19 and 20 years old. A large percentage of them were part of the 25th East Lancashire Regiment, recruited maily from Burnley, Accrington and Rossendale.
They all gave their lives for their country.
Thats why we need to be reminded!

Re: Suprise......
I watched a history programme earlier this year on the WW2.
Apparently the German soldiers were given crystal Meth or something very similar.
It was suggested that’s why they could fight for hours and hours and seemed to be super human.
