Even when as a Test playing side they used to prepare for tours it was common to have a shocking start to a series, nowadays as they just seem to turn up and walk out to bat it is quite common to be rolled over 1st innings of a tour but this is bordering gutless.

When Buttler(who is often accused of not being able to play test cricket) alone scores more than the top 5 put together you are going to lose pretty much everytime.

Rory Burns being bowled on the first ball just about sums it up.

Sorry for the analogy but Rory Burns is to the Ashes what Brighton have been to our season. It sets the tone and if Burns was a Lancastrian he wouldn't be anywhere near the England team.

Crazy how bad our test team has declined over the last 5-7 years.

I guess Root could be classed as world class but would he even get into our recent teams

Rory Burns can't hold a bat correctly. What chance has he got of bringing it into position in time for a 90 mile an hour yorker??
Openers must have good technique or an incredible eye - he, unfortunately has neither!

Would Joe Root who has nearly 17,000 test runs and averages over 50 get in recent test sides ? :D

He has been in the test side for about 10 years, which recent side are you thinking he wouldn't get in

No surprise given the total lack of preparation yet again for a big test series.
They've been chipping away at the integrity of Proper Cricket - ie Test Cricke - for years in preference of the quick fix version.
Even more so now the real power in the game is over in India.

It always amazes me that New Zealand seem to be solid across all formats, whilst most other teams struggle in one format if they focus on on others.

Then again, I think New Zealand are just freaks when it comes to sport, unbelievable for the population of the country

Joe Root is great. But I doubt he gets in the 2005-2011 team.

I think that highlights our decline over that time period. That our current best player would struggle to get into that team.

However I will say our bowling lineup over the last 5-10 years has got to be the best we have had. Especially the quick.

Let’s just see how the Aussies bat first. I never really criticise a team in a match until both teams have had a bat. If the Aussies are 250 for 2 at the end of day 2, fair enough…

He is a superb batter but the 17000 runs you refer to is accross international cricket, not just Test cricket. That would be a scary amount of runs.

He needs to improve his record in Australia to be an all time great though I think.

That makes no sense at all.

The 2005 - 11 team ? It's a 6 year gap.

In that time we had players like Bopara, Bell, Collingwood and Trott at 3 or 4 none are in the same league as Root. Just nonsense.

I would argue Trott and Bell were just as good. They were playing at time where there were some of the best ballers around. The quality of bowlers has considerably dropped off from that era.

Nearly every test team had at least a world class baller back then.

Correct it is nearer 10000 test runs, I thought 17k was high but underneath it had his 1st class total. You forget these days he played T20 and ODI's in the past

Looking at the green wicket and the conditions (+ our fragile upper order), [and our lack of batting preparation], it seems incredible that we didn't take a bit of a gamble, play Anderson and Broad, stick Australia in and try to bowl them out cheaply. It would have been our best hope.

That would be rational but when you see the position Burns gets into to face the first ball, he deserves criticism.

He must be thinking if I stand infront of the 5th and 6th stump I won't be LBW when I miss it, sadly he forgot when the bowler aims at the stumps and he misses it then it will hit the stumps.

I can't understand why folks are getting worked up, given the way that we're improving.
I'll admit we were poor/sloppy during the morning session and to be fair the first few overs after lunch too; perhaps only to be expected given the difficulties/restrictions in getting match-practice? But between then and tea, nobody could argue that we weren't solidly moderate through that session so by comparison we were much better and during the evening session we were faultless. With that sort of progress and the question as to whether the Captaincy is going to effect Cummins bowling still up for debate, I'm growing in confidence about our regaining the Ashes.

Exactly the reason I bowed out :D Then this is the same poster who thinks Lewandowski is good but not that good and on a par with Torres over his career.

Not sure his football knowledge is much better

For once I find myself in agreement with Newcastle, Bell and Trott played a huge role in England winning down under in 2011, when we actually possessed a decent top order who could be relied upon to score big runs, and bat for 2 days if required, which in Australia is what you need to do to compete.

Doesn't matter how good your bowling unit might be if you can't put runs on the board.

In terms of honours Torres and Lewandowksi have a similar career.

Lewandowski is unfortunate but he will never be considered as best of class.

It’s a fair opinion on Root. He’s a great batsmen but he has always come across as a bit of a bottler (in my opinion) never makes the big runs in the big games. Whereas Stokes makes the runs in the big games (but usually fails to make consistent runs).

Unreal batting performance for England during that series. Trott, Cook, Strauss, Bell, even Prior and Collingwood.

We won 3 tests by an innings, and posted our highest ever total in the Australia during the fifth test.

Not quite McGrath, Lee, and Warne, but agree that Johnson (he bowls to the left...) aside; Siddle, Harris, and Hilfenhaus were top quality bowlers.

True and for the record I think both of them would get into my England all time eleven. That’s what I meant about Root, he wouldn’t get near my England all time eleven. We have had so many good players over the year

True, but I'd still fancy that 2010/11 England batting line up to beat the current Aussie lot and the 2005 icons mentioned.

I didn't really mean Burns, just the game in general.

Anybody can get a first baller, batting is tough especially against 90 mph bowlers.

I however, have said for a long time now, Burns shouldn't have even been on the plane let alone opening the batting in the crucial first test.

When he's made runs his innings have often been fortunate, and very ugly.

There is so much tech around now a days to analyse players weaknesses, when you've as many as RB it's easy pickings.

Trying to find small crumbs of comfort for any England fans amidst that debacle, and this really is clutching at straws TBH.

Hameed at least battled hard and made it through to lunch, and both Buttler and Pope looked in decent touch, but that's small mercies after being bundled out for 147 after winning the toss and opting to bat.

England can only hope the pitch doesn't flatten out, and we can maybe nick 2 or 3 out early with the new ball, if not then unless the rain rides to our rescue it's fairly certain to be 1-0 heading to Adelaide.

Weather is fine for the first 3-3.5 hours then on-off storms, hopefully we can hit them early or it’ll be a worry if Warner et al get off to a flier.

Australia 127 all out, England 590-4 dec Burns 251 not out, Australia 9 down on the last day when the storms hit.

That’s my prediction with Joe Root getting pelters for batting on to long to let Burns get to 250

Burns will struggle to make 250 in the series....

Trying to find small crumbs of comfort for any England fans amidst that debacle, and this really is clutching at straws TBH.

One big crumb of comfort is that Covid restrictions prevented thousands of England fans shelling out to travel to Australia to witness the debacle. ;)

Yes that's very true, I was considering taking in this Ashes tour myself, but clearly circumstances dictated that wouldn't be possible.

Play due to commence at 11.30 PM UK time is anyone wants to endure further misery, that's to try and make up some of the lost time on day 1.

Robinson strikes early getting Harris, and he and Wood have been impressive with the new ball.

England have bowled really well this morning without any luck.
Could have had 5 on another day.

42-1

This will be over in 3 days!........Feckless bunch of tossers.....no pride & not a clue how to play Test Cricket.

There must be better options out there.

Set my alarm for 5am, great decision! Slowly dragged ourself back into the game! Let’s hope we can knock them off with less than a 100-150 lead.

Warner scored a few but it wasn’t comfortable at all

Scoring too many here unfortunately, I can’t see us scoring 300-400 on a day 3 wicket that is still doing a bit
