The foundations were layed yesterday, it was always going to happen.
Once they didn't get their own way yesterday they were always going to "get more cases" today.

These teams would find a team if it was case play or award the match to the opposition.

Rule bending at its finest, coincidence they have a injury list as long as their arm, I think not.

It's Burnley, if we come up against a big team we will be forced to play even if its the tea lady in goal

So the whole point of the summit meeting of all PL clubs last week and the subsequent "edict"/statement which followed it regarding fixtures and call offs was precisely what???? Ridiculous and stupid paper exercise!

I can understand COVID leading to games being postponed, it’s the “and injuries” that makes the whole thing a nonsense… it is completely irrelevant and that is why clubs keep squads.

I can see legal actions deciding more than football matches deciding what happens at the end of the season.

Conte said it was a waste of time because it was as if the decisions were already made before the meeting.

It’s a combined reason exacerbating an existing problem, it is relevant because it’s an additional reason if you didn’t have the injured players as well as the COVID ridden players you wouldn’t have the excuse at hand.

Jump forward to this time next year, after the season is postponed mid November for the world cup, the final is to be played the week before Christmas and the start of the season set to be on boxing day how many players will be tired and injured so "covid" will again be the excuse to get game's called off for the pampered millionaire's of the big club's

On the contrary players being injured is entirely dealt with within the squad system, therefore it should be irrelevant to COVID cancellations not used in combination to add weight to requests for cancellations.

Quite I'm sure it's entirely coincidental that Everton just happen to have some of their major players side-lined at this moment.

Of course there would be no self interest involved in them managing to get this game off would there.

That’s true to a certain degree but the PL aren’t treating the reasons separately it’s a simple case of can you make the numbers up required & that’s all they are bothered about regardless of whether somebody’s got an ingrowing toenail an abscess on a wisdom tooth or COVID or whatever reasons. That’s the way things are whether we agree or disagree with the rules.

Looking at the number of postponements across the country for boxing day already, it's just like I used to remember Christmas fixtures, with games called off left, right and centre... although it was usually because of the weather :(

I can see the Premier League aren’t doing it… and that is why it is wrong and why the season is corrupted and is hardly providing an environment that can lead to a balanced league, everyone is paying for and expect. Like baking a cake you can keep adding ingredients but eventually there comes a time when the only option left is to bin it. It is little more than a sticking plaster to get through Christmas when the decision can be blamed on Government Policy, rather than admit liability themselves.

… just to add I recently registered as qualified and have already received requests to apply for NEW work from home council administration contracts to run twelve months, administration positions…. I will be amazed if the decision to enter lockdown immediately after Christmas has not already been taken.

Do you think Boris has told everyone in local government down to the people who write job adverts, that the lockdown has been ordered - but the news hasn't leaked? Seems unlikely.

The decision for government staff to work from home was taken in March 2020. They have never rescinded it. Have you tried dealing with the Tax Office lately?

They’ve been doing that pretty much since the start of the pandemic. Hence why council buildings are on the market left right and centre. Public sector will stay at home as long as possible.

So as of yesterday, both everton and Burnley had 15 fit outfield players with appearances this season. Are you saying that if Burnley, yesterday or on any previous occasion this season when we were a bit short, could have applied for a postponement purely on the grounds of two or three more injuries regardless of covid? I doubt it.

Basically what happened today IMO was Everton lied through their teeth about further injuries and defied the PL to take action against them. the PL bottled it.

They may have been told that, but I don't think Johnson would even try and get something like that through a commons vote after the rebellion over plan B, and that was before the news that the new variant is up to 70% less likely to require hospital treatment. It would either be defeated or the scale of the rebellion would wound him too badly. If there are to be new measures, it will be advisory only, but of course the council and government staff will be only too happy to take on that advice.

Anyway, sorry for my digression into politics, this thread needs to remain active.

Do the PL differentiate between Covid and injuries when deciding if a game is postponed.
What happens with yellow card resets ?
Will players signed in the January window be allowed to play in rescheduled games ?

No I don’t think that has happened and that is why I did not say that had happened. I do however think the high ups have been given the nod, and that is why I have been emailed to apply for work from home administration positions from Clydebank to Kent in the last two weeks.

Even the very threat of such measures, and you can guarantee Everton would have cobbled a team together, sadly the PL is far too spineless to even consider going down that road.

Outrageous manipulation
13 players plus a keeper and use U23 squad if needed according to Premier league rules announced last week.Total bxxxxxxs.
This was a winnable game and Benitez didn't fancy another defeat.
In reality it seems Everton have far more players available, but have chosen not to use them.

I suspect, had they chosen to do so, Everton could play a very strong side.

It was postponed because Everton couldn’t field a team. That’s a combination of Covid cases, Covid contact isolations and injuries. They could, however, have fielded a weakened team that would have put no one at risk.
Everton and perhaps the Premier League didn’t fancy that, so in effect it was cancelled for sporting reasons, I concede that Covid played a part but it was not the reason it was postponed.
PS And that’s before we even get to whether or not Everton engineered the situation.
As to the common sense aspect of the decision, given the guidelines seem blurry to say the least, I don’t think so.

No surprise at all. What does surprise me is that Burnley seem to have a fit squad.
What will - and here’s the cynic in me - happen in the near future Burnley will be the first Premiership team to be forced to play a fixture with a weakened squad or get a points deduction.

The Underground Pub in Benalmádena is losing a fortune with all these match postponements, plus I’m getting bored not being able to watch matches. On a more serious note, a new range of covid measures are now being introduced here in Andalusia, masks to be worn everywhere outdoors, entrance to bars and restaurants only with vaccination certification etc. so it is getting serious again.
