Anything but an enjoyable trip to the Fylde Coast on this day in 1992

These articles always bring back memories, I did my work experience in Woolworths, didn't really enjoy it though.

Mark Kendall was he really as bad as it seems? The only keepers I recall from that period are Neenan & Pearce. So perhaps I've erased all memories of Kendall.

And a certain Trevor Sinclair on Blackpool's bench, he had a pretty decent career didn't he, got a big money move to QPR not long after due to impressing in an FA Cup tie.

Kendall had retired. We brought him in to help with Mullen stating he would not be signed as a player. Then, probably after another argument with Pearce, he got him registered.

He’d been a good goalkeeper previously but not for us.

Ah! now it makes sense, Jimmy Mullen falling out with a player never surely. :)

I don’t think he and Pearce ever saw eye to eye

We've had plenty worse before and since, and the folk who complain about our present crop don't know how spoilt they really are in terms of Burnley keepers.

I was brought up on top goalkeepers, we've got them now, but there was some, shall we say, not as good between them.

Is there a points per game table of all the 5 (?) keepers we used that season - with whom did we do statistically the best?

I’ll take a look - but first thoughts would be Marriott because he was in goal for that run of nine wins.

I used to watch the heck out of the VHS when I was younger and nearly always fast forwarded that highlight. The colour orange, Kendall, the shrill sound of their fans, Bamber doing a forward roll. I had a visceral hatred for that minute and a half.

I remember this game mainly because of the post match "entertainment". I went over in three cars with six lads from the Rose and Crown plus my brother and our two sons who were about 15 at the time.
After the match we were walking back to our cars with my brother and the two 15 year olds on one side of the road, wearing colours, I was on the other side of the road with my mates. A group of about 7 Blackpool fans started picking a fight with my brother and the youngsters actually throwing punches and kicking. They didn't realise we were there and would obviously get involved. Let's just say it was the worst mistake they could have made. I have never condoned fighting at football matches but there are times when you have to defend yourself.

Here we go - in terms of points per game

2.27 - Andy Marriott (15 games)
2.17 - Nicky Walker (6 games)
2.00 - David Williams (5 games)
1.64 - Chris Pearce (14 games)
1.50 - Mark Kendall (2 games)

Chris Pearce played in the two expunged games against Aldershot. If you include those two games, his average moves up to 1.81.

I bet those are career highs for every one of those keepers. (and I'm not expecting you to check!)

If I remember rightly this was the season before the away terrace was condemned, the 5-2 flattered them but they went for our jugular from the off and Kendall’s performance that day will never be forgotten.

Marriott gave the place a huge lift, but for me Walker was the best keeper we had right up to Heaton arriving.
