As with all these things - it's the press making a mountain out of a midget...

M&S did this - alongside many other small, incremental improvements - quietly in the middle of last year as part of a review into every aspect of its business - internally and externally - based on a simple mantra that no form of discrimination would - nor should - be tolerated. The assumption that this would somehow alienate its traditional "older" customer was easily disproved yesterday when it released its best Christmas trading revenue figures, both in food - and especially in clothing - ever... easily outperforming its traditional competition. From a fragile trading position a few years ago - the city now sees M&S - with inclusivity at its heart - as a retail star.

Ahhh… so it’s an incremental improvement?. Right.

Ahhh…. So to have them named midget gems was discrimination?. Right.

Ahhh…. So doing all this has improved M&S’ fortunes to the point they are again a major player in the high st? Right.

I've just been to M&S and thrown em all on the floor in disgust.

Then I bought some 3 for £7 lovelies for me dinner tonight and a bucket of flapjacks!

I get offended at some of the people who pretend to be offended at some things which clearly are not offensive.
I don't see how midget, in the context of Midget Gems, could conceivable be linked to the name Midget as used to describe people of dwarfism.
I used to go to the shop at Saturday tea time for The Pink and a quarter of Midget Gems, never relating anything to Little Albert (a family friend). I'm offended that my happy childhood memories are being spoiled - it's affecting my mental health.

I always remember a midget/dwarf couple who lived around Colne Road ,bit down from Duke of York? nr the old Stanley Street. We had a wallpaper shop and they’d walk past .Next time I saw them they were pushing a pram . I had a look in and was shocked at the also “ midget/dwarf” baby with a seemingly huge head and features . For a 12yr old I was pretty shocked !

If they are serious about no form of discrimination should be tolerated, how come they still have separate menswear and womenswear departments?

Good point! Are Disney renaming 'It's a Small World' at Epcot? As a man of 5 foot 6 stature, I have decided I am now deeply offended.*

* the fact I really enjoyed it during a visit to Epcot has no bearing on the fact I am now deeply offended

When referring to an object it isn’t an offensive term. When referring to a human being it is. M&S have actually got this wrong.

I couldn't care less if M&S change the name of their midget gems.

That's one to ponder for you; is that an opinion on the op or not? That should prevent you from getting all cross.

Can I also just remind you that your contribution to this thread was to rant about question time. No mention of the op...

I’m suprised the couple weren’t well known in the area at the time ( perhaps 1980-83ish) I didn’t live in the area , though was a boozer on corner of Stanley st ( name escapes me possibly Albion ) and a sex shop further down which was a cause of controversy. I’m not aware of the dwarf couple being patrons of either though

There have always been a number of related dwarf/midget families living around that area and I know one of the older ones was one of the "umpa lumpas" in the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder. Kevin was also one who tragically and sadly died young in an accident in the town centre a number of years ago
