Excellent article and thought provoking. I'm still not in this "go down and it's not all doom and gloom because we'll win loads of games and storm a very mediocre championship" school of thought. I desperately do not want to go down, because the reality might turn out to be very different and we could easily find that 5 years later we're still messing about in that cess pit with a half empty stadium and hemorrhaging money!

Agree with everything there. As long as the money gets spent wisely and not spent on journeymen.

The money is going to the previous Board isn't it?

It's like have pat on the head for little old Burnley and off ye pop now and leave the big clubs to it. You might enjoy winning a few games in a lesser division.

Surely we’ll be paying off MSD first given it’s a higher interest rate?

If we go down the whole point of our seasons would be trying to get back to where we are now, it’s a ridiculous idea.

Aren't the new owners trying to buy all the shares, including minority holders'?

Yes but I suspect contractually Garlick etc get first dibbs. I also suspect that they will be back picking up the pieces quite soon, unless we can find a way to stay up.

Most teams get beaten by Man City these days. Because they buy the best players in the world and have a good manager.

Pity the article didnt mention how we have got under the skins of the two Erics at Liverpool and Chelsea. Its been worth the ride for that alone.

Landlord of one pub that's frequented regularly on match days told me they get more custom in the championship overall due to the Saturday 3pm kick offs. I suppose for them it's not all doom and gloom.

Is it really that good an article?
There is an assumption that as per previous, Burnley get lucky, aquire a Danny Ings or Andre Gray who will fire them up to the top of the Championship. Did Sheffield Utd, QPR or Middlesbrough 'Get lucky '? These are three clubs that have been promoted then relegated during our time in the Premiership and continue to battle their way out.
Chris Wood is 'misfiring' partly due to the failure to invest in quality midfielders around him. I've no doubt that more Arab money will be spent in that department which will secure survival and unlock the £200m plus which the Premiership offers...not a bad return for the outlay on Wood, Trippier and AN Other.

Meanwhile the same paper is lauding Steven Gerrard for spending 25million on a dodgy left back who can't get into a misfiring Everton team.

Fell out with Benitez due to his dodgy tactics. Digne will be one of the best left backs in the league again under Stevie G, great signing.

Better and more solid defensively than Matt Targett? For 25m more? I think there are 40000 toffees that disagree with you.

That was a very poorly written article for a professional journalist, using the “that’s the point of football” tag line too many times. It lost its impact when it was used the second time, and further use just became boring.
The strength of the message was diluted because of the amateurish way in which it was written IMO.

Agreed.

The overall message though, that it's OK to be relegated because we will now have loads of possession, start winning, have fun again, AND, get promoted.

'You might even have the majority of possession in more than the odd game, which, the last time I looked, was pretty much the point of football.'

It's not.

'In fact, they might start winning a few games. And the last time I looked, that was pretty much the point of football.'

This is. (And I was told you should not start sentences with 'and' :-))

'Only twice in 17 Premier League fixtures have you enjoyed more of the ball than your opponents - even playing second fiddle to Manchester United on one occasion.'

Second fiddle to Manchester United? What's that supposed to mean. Is the author a pessimistic United fan?

I get the impression we have had more possession generally then in past Premier League seasons, although I don't know the stats.

The author seems to think it's a doddle to get promoted back to the Prem. It may be if you have a young side with quality and potential but if the team needs considerable rebuilding like ours will it would be tougher.

The ideal of course would be to do that rebuild in The Premier League.

Except its loaded with assumptions based on the side we had when we wo the league.

It's bullshit. We are loaded with debt and not having the money coming in makes it much harder indeed

And (natch) it's a rather **** typical Premier League tinted view of football - the Championship is hard to get out of. Bit if mostly you **** around the top league then you don't really see what happens below.

But they are facts unfortunately.

If you don’t invest properly you’ll end up back in the championship

We don’t play a possession based system - the journalist has clearly never seen us play

I don't know where to start picking that article apart but take a look at this sentence for starters...

"It has been grim for Sean Dyche’s side this season and does not look like getting a lot less grimmer."

Up until a year ago I’d have agreed with him. I’d always regarded relegation as something to be avoided if possible (that IS the point of football) but certainly not feared, and in many ways the football we played in the Championship was more enjoyable.

Unfortunately, under the new financial model, I now regard relegation as an existential threat, and if we didn’t bounce back straight away (and not everybody does) we probably never would.

Relegation this season could be as significant as that in 75/76. It was nearly a quarter of a century before we even threatened to return to the top flight and almost another decade after that before we actually did. We don’t currently have the basis of a promotion winning side and I am not sure we will have the resources to buy what we need to get us back at the first attempt. I hope we can stabilise and then build, but I do fear the worst
