Ben Mee

“I want to get the club out of this situation,” says Mee. “That’s the focus. I won’t be going anywhere for now. I saw some mad links to Newcastle; imagine going there and ruining the ten years I’ve had here, that’s not the reputation I want.

“I want to keep this club in the Premier League and play for Burnley for a long time.”

Good interview with him on the athletic.

That's exactly what the captain of the club should be saying.
It's what the fans want & need to hear.

Be interesting to see where he ends up if his contract does run down.

I just can’t see him as a starter for any other premier league club or any note.

Nice little dig at Wood.

As regards the speech about his future, its absolutely the right thing to say.

"I want to stay here a long time"
= I know there's an offer on the table, but it's not exactly what I want, so if you give me what I want I'll sign, however at the moment I'm keeping my options open just incase something bigger and better comes along.

Which is absolutely fair enough.

Because its either that or the foodbank for the Mee family...

Only been on 25- 50k a week for 6 seasons, going back down to 25k a week would cripple him.

But as the case with 99% of footballers money talks, Ben will be no diffrent.
Which is absolutely fine, and as long as he gives his all for now, and says the right things, that's all we can ask.

Exactly what he should be saying and what fans want to hear. I wouldn’t blame him for going if we do go down and a PL offer comes in though. Plenty of credit in the bank and been a great signing.

I don’t think anyone is saying he hasn’t been a class player and captain are they. They’re just pointing out that there’s a possibility he’ll leave if he doesn’t get the contract he wants. Nothing wrong with that. He’ll always be a club legend and I hope he stays.

Fair enough what he says but its a bit blah blah blah for me at the minute, I'm not fussed about words I want performances because all that matters now are results and they come from performances generally.
Be the captain we know you can be Ben and get the like of tarks pulling with you for the next half season.

I think he has been a superb captain and committed to the cause as any fan could ask from someone that plays for the club they follow.

However, if he is going to just jump ship at the end of the season because of money - that's understandable in one sense but he could easily just say, If we don't survive, I want to generate a fee for you - even if it was say something like £10-15m.

Either way, he seems focused and committed in the words he is saying but actions speak louder than words

Been a great servant to the club
May be saying the right things in an interview but make no mistake he will be away in the summer if we go down
Current lower Prem clubs could be interested along with any clubs coming up from Championship
He will be available on a free so that will spark the interest a lot of clubs
As for Captain, not so sure
Don't see any leadership qualities on the pitch and I think this is a problem within the club
The players will certainly be hearing the voice of Dyche constantly on about keeping the shape but Ben, along with everyone else, just plays the game without appearing to utter much of a word to each other
I may be old fashioned but I want to see our Captain (and others) geeing players up with words of encouragement, rollockings or whatever is required
They just seem to be in auto mode when they go out onto the pitch

Agreed, and Ben has committed all of him to the cause since he has been here, even in the face of major issues at the Club (Citeh Banner) and with his new born.

For me, Sean Dyche and Ben Mee are a wonderful fit. Both come across as honest and committed individuals who want the best for BFC. Obviously, if either moves Club, that commitment would move with them.

Really good read.
Actions are louder than words, however he is a perfect fit for us.
Exactly what we need at centre half and I'd say that every single player alongside him looks better with him than without him.
No need for anyone to be cynical in my opinion. As for the suggestion that he's not a good player, we'd miss him more than some may imagine .

Complete rubbish, but no more than I'd expect from you TBH.

Awful footballers don't boast over 200 PL appearances on their resumes do they.

And Ben Mee will go down as a Clarets legend no matter what transpires this summer regarding his future.

I actually suspect he'll probably stay, and quite rightly he's just looking to get the best terms for himself, nowt wrong with that in my view.

Good to hear Ben but a question for you. If “Mad Newcastle” came in with a big offer in the next two weeks which meant you would double your current wage are you saying you’d prefer to stay and fight to keep us up?

A bit of deja vu here. The last time he ran his contract down
he was hoping for a big uplift of salary , potentially at WBA. Tony Pulis had indicated he wanted to sign him has his contract ran down. However Pulis got sacked much earlier in the season , but Ben still delayed signing his contract in the home someone else would come in and offer the big salary uplift he wanted.

They didn’t so he signed a bigger contract with us , as we know,The problem in the meantime is that Burnley expecting Ben to leave signed Gibson as a replacement. Interesting that Ben only days or a week or two after Gibson signed, finally signed his new contract with us . I would imagine significantly deflating Gibson.

The complication this time for Burnley is what happens if we go down. As a poster has said , why doesn’t he sign a contract with us now which covers off that situation.

He is unlikely to , because unfortunately in most situations player power rules now and he will do what he thinks is best for him not Burnley, as Wood did.

You aren't allowed to say that on here, some people are adamant he was always going to sign, despite him stalling for months.

Nice words absolutely but as others have alluded to, signing a new contract would speak far louder. It’s understandable in his position contract wise, but it would be such a boost for us to see that level of commitment from the Captain.

I do enjoy the clear dig at Wood though - makes you wonder what the feeling of the squad is towards him, if judging by Ben Mee you’d have to think they’re not best pleased with him.

In fairness the same as Burnley are doing with nearly all the other out of contract players, with the likely outcome, that Burnley won’t re- sign them in the hope they will be able to sign better players , whichever division we are in . In the meantime how does Dyche keep these players motivated and focused when so many won’t be here next season whichever division we are in .

He isn't going to sign a new contract in the position we are in. That is the harsh reality. Why would he when he won't want to play in the Championship?
Tarks is off no matter what..Mee will decide when he knows what division we are in. While he is here he will fight for us..if we go down we won't see him for dust. It is going to be a hell of a rebuild job if we go down...but perhaps not a bad thing.
He is no different to most footballers. Ultimately it is about them and not the fans or the club. Not that that is always a bad thing. He's only Mr Burnley as long as Burnley are in the Prem. Lets not paint it differently.

It's quite possible most will be let go if we stay up..or kept if we go down. It may not be their choice but equally they may be waiting to see where we are too. If we stay up i'd be letting the majority go. If we go down some of them nmy do a job and be willing to take a lower financial package.

Regardless of his contract situation we really need Mee to be playing if we are to have any chance of remaining in the top league.
It’s his central defensive partner who needs putting on the sidelines because I don’t think he can be trusted to give the 100% we need.

Not at coaching.

Even the enigmatic Joey Barton and his more prosaic teammates, Michael Duff and Graham Alexander, have had to start in the lower leagues.
