the danger of making judgment on players from your armchair
I watched Lille play yesterday, from my armchair, and was impressed by Tim Weah (George's son - USA), and a cameo sub appearance from Renato Sanches (Portuguese). In their development, Weah had a spell at Celtic and Sanches at Swansea, so neither are greenhorns to UK soccer.....
and yet, I then go and research them on stats sites and it doesn't back up my impression from the game, although both are players from their respective countries.
Tough business this scouting lark....

Sanches made the wrong move going to Bayern and was completely out of sorts by the time he went to Swansea, letting them down badly considering what they'd paid out to get him on loan.
He's had to rebuild his career at Lille and is now being linked with big money moves again.
Apparently he's been caught waving his middle finger at Marseille fans tonight

Re: the danger of making judgment on players from your armchair
There’s a real player in Weah waiting to get out but he’s going to be a late developer I think. No one quite knows whether he’s a CF or to play him wide. He’s only 6ft, quite willowy, he’s quick but doesn’t have what you would call a physical presence, and doesn’t score enough goals.
Once all this rawness is worked out and there’s an idea of what he actually is best at and he’s learned the nuances of a role he’ll be a great player. At the moment it’s like the kid predicted to get 10 O levels, but in reality is struggling to get C’s in regular class.
His cousin Patrick has the same problem. 17, plays for Adrian Heath, raw af, they’re trying to work out what to do with him.

Sanches has turned his career around at Lille, key figure in them winning the League last season. His Swansea nightmare is well behind him now, still relatively young and will attract an elite club soon I think along with a few others in that squad.

Who in their right mind scouts from an armchair ? Clearly it can only be done from a couch

Quite a number of posters on here make judgements on players from their armchairs, particularly Burnley players!
Re: the danger of making judgment on players from your armchair
Thank god you explained what you were holding with your two hands otherwise the mind boggles
Sean will have been hopefully making some judgements himself from the chaise longue last week

You get a far better view of the game on TV, every post of yours is about fans not attending, spoiler alert you're not a super fan

And it was a nightmare for him. Arrived with top billing, that he was going to be one of the stars of the Premier League, he had a nightmare which wasn't helped by constant and public berating from his managers at Swansea.
To be honest, I'd forgotten about him and had no idea he was at Lille.

You can be a fan/supporter with never even going to the ground or watching a single game, anything that brings money to a club constitutes some form of support & you can do that just by buying merchandise.

Yes never going to the ground or even watching a single game is certainly a common trait with some of the "experts" on here!Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 2:23 pmYou can be a fan/supporter with never even going to the ground or watching a single game, anything that brings money to a club constitutes some form of support & you can do that just by buying merchandise.

I think I've seen you on Brunshaw Road!!Superjohnnyfrancis wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 3:41 pmIf you get an official bfc stamp on your forehead then you are an official fan, you can buy them in person or online from the club shop. Better to buy one in person though especially if you live in London.

He came on as a late substitute - played right wing. He absolutely skinned the LB and LCM and left them for dead with a superb piece of skill. Based on that he would be on the right, what we have on the left with Cornet - formidable (said in a French accent) - at least from the comfort of my armchair.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 2:02 pmAnd it was a nightmare for him. As for Tim Weah... USMNT and the son of the man himself. He's the center of my new front three in our new 433 - what could possibly go wrong?

When/if the knee bending barminess stops I’ll be back on until then it what it is, occasionally travelling down from c Durham isn’t missed.
Re: the danger of making judgment on players from your armchair
No danger because armchair fans don't pick teams except fantasy. This should probably be addressed to Man U fans.

I'm the same. I can just about manage the happy clapping for someone I've never heard of but until then I'm an armchair fan.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 6:09 pmWhen/if the knee bending barminess stops I’ll be back on until then it what it is, occasionally travelling down from c Durham isn’t missed.

I used to go to games all the time, everywhere, very very rarely missed. I now live on the other side of the world so I don't go to games. I get up at 4:30am to watch us on the TV and trust me, if we lose it hurts just as much in Las Vegas as it ever did standing on the Longside

In terms of watching an individual, I don’t think that you do get a better view. You see much less of what they do off the ball, when watching on TV, unless there is something that is specifically highlighted at HT / FT.

I spent years watching football behind a steel beam, i'm biased
You're right about an individual player, I think the TV view is better for the whole game though.

The biggest critics seem to be the ones who go to the fewest number of games*
