Watford game off
Re: Watford game off
I respect the decision and given the circumstances, there does not appear to be much else that could have been done. However it's going to be a tough ask now to begin our recovery against Arsenal and Man Utd. I can't see the PL postponing a third consecutive match on Sunday.

Exactly but some people seem to think that we should be using them to make up the numbers.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 10:17 pmA fair number of those lads tonight are just out of the youth team.

I'm surprised, I expected the dirty end of the stick.
I would rather all these games had been played, but once they set the precedent in the first fixture they've painted themselves into a corner that I can't see how they get out of.

Re: Watford game off
Sounds as though we are genuinely in a position where we can’t play this game. Some, not all, are guilty of getting games postponed with a couple out, we have 10 players left it’s obvious we can’t play it.

A no win situation that decreases our chances of survival in my opinion
Re: Watford game off
If it gets postponed it's likely to be from the Arsenal side.leelad wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 10:19 pmI respect the decision and given the circumstances, there does not appear to be much else that could have been done. Re: Watford game off
I was fuming about matches getting called off by teams with far bigger squads than BFC, but now we are in the state we are in (with injuries and Covid) I cannot see any other way for us but to ask for more postponements.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 10:30 pmI'm surprised, I expected the dirty end of the stick.

Its definitely been played by some of the bigger teams and that is unforgiveable but ... thems the rules set out by the PL and so here we are ... I just hope we can cope with the fixture backlog.

Re: Watford game off
Nobody’s fault (apart from the premier league) who set the ridiculous rules in the first place, but this for me is a massive blow to our chances of staying up. Watford play Norwich on Friday, no matter what the result is, our next win wouldn’t get us out the drop zone, add that to the fact that our next 3 scheduled games are Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool, which i find it difficult to see us getting any points from those games meaning morale and confidence will be even lower, then that for me is curtains unfortunately. I hope I’m wrong but with the results so far this season it looks a near impossible task.
Re: Watford game off
We'd have probably lost tomorrow nights game if we were down to the bare bones anyway.
Better to have a chance against the likes of Watford when Cornet is back than playing against them now and losing.

Re: Watford game off
The crucial point.
Covid doesn’t just affect you while infectious but may make you tired afterwards too. No way were we favourites to win tomorrow. Now we have three “three hits” to get back to speed, then we have a largely immune squad for the remaining fixtures. That puts us indecent shape. We’re fighting for 17th, we probably need 7 wins from 21 games. If we lose a few due to fixture congestion it isn’t necessarily fatal.

Exactly. If we get a few good signings through the door we can play them against the likes of Watford, Norwich, Newcastle etc. and if need be, rest some players against Man City and so on.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 10:45 pmThe crucial point.

We can prioritise the important - winnable games when we start playing catch-up.

Results for the rest of the season should now be decided by the Pools panel.

Good point about the tiredness. I had it in at NY and I’m really struggling with my running since. I wouldn’t like to play a game of football at the moment anyway.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 10:45 pmThe crucial point.

I think the next three we should set up super defensively and use them deliberately as games where we’re aiming to Nick points but more importantly rebuild our fitness.
Re: Watford game off
Agree with spijed here, important we have a better side out when we actually play Watford, losing tomorrow would have been disastrous for players and supporters alike.
We have a better chance with it being deferred.
Like a few others i am also personally happy as i would have only been back on the grass tomorrow, so was touch and go and may not have been passed fit.

Re: Watford game off
An aging squad, stretched to the limits in terms of bodies fit or good enough to get us out of this relegation battle
Can't be helped but does not bode well in a fixture pile up without new starters coming in - and we need starters not more squad additions
Also, looking at the squad we currently have 23 senior pros (not inc BPF) available for selection
Are we only allowed 25 seniors and if so does that mean only room for two more ?

Re: Watford game off
I’m dead against postponements, but let’s not kid ourselves that Watford cancelled the original game very late since it would’ve disadvantaged them. To play a game when
The PL should’ve either outright ruled out postponements (in which case we’d likely have got results vs Watford, Villa & Everton and might not be in this position now) or called a long break. They didn’t want either, in which case we are well within our rights to expect parity.

I think it’s 22 - have you included Nathan Collins? He is below age so doesn’t need to be in the 25.

Re: Watford game off
Whilst being utterly p'd off yet again about a game being off, I actually disagree regarding our chances of survival. Clearly we were going to be under strength tonight (and last Saturday) and there has to be the likely hood that we will be have a much stronger team out when we do play, plus Cornet possibly back and even a couple of new faces in. Fixture pile up is definitely going to be an issue, as is being cut adrift at the bottom due to others around us playing and it looking like a mountain to climb, but I'll risk that to get the best team we can out on the pitch.

Re: Watford game off
Our chances of beating Watford who had a fully fit squad of players refreshed by 3 January signings (all of whom started the game against Newcastle) were probably not that great anyway. Especially as we are down to the bare bones and have lost one of our only fit strikers.

I think it’s more likely they cancel the season and decide it on a points per game basis. That move would relegate us.Top Claret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 8:51 amIf this keeps going on know one will be able to fulfil their fixtures and the season will be null and void

We’ve got 5 games to fit in and 16 free midweeks. Sure we’ll squeeze them in!!!

Re: Watford game off
We can't play midweek games when there are Champions League games being played, UEFA don't allow it, think it might be something to do with TV contracts.
So that will rule out quite a lot of midweeks.

Don't think we have a say in it, it's completely up to the PL to arrange.summitclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 9:29 amIf we make it easy for the first of the 5 to be an away game against a strong side then we would be stupid.
Re: Watford game off
Under normal circumstances the BBC don't show live Premier league games but in the last couple of seasons there has been quite a bit of flexibility.
I doubt us playing Watford on the same night as Man City playing in the Champions league would affect their viewing figures too much.

Given that Maxwell will be back next month, and we may sign a few players, added to the fact that these are professional footballers who WANT to play football, the number of games between now and the end of the season should not be a problem. We don't have League Cup, FA Cup and European games to worry about.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 10:14 pmIt’s a relief that it’s off if we are so short of players but overall this is becoming a nightmare for us. Assuming we go ahead at Arsenal we will still have twenty games to play from the beginning of Feb.
If it is too much for any of our players to play 2 games per week then... they may be in the wrong job

Playing an extra eight games in the Championship isn't considered a problem. Therefore teams will play four more matches in the second half of the season than we would normally.RalphCoatesComb wrote: ↑Tue Jan 18, 2022 10:34 amGiven that Maxwell will be back next month, and we may sign a few players, added to the fact that these are professional footballers who WANT to play football, the number of games between now and the end of the season should not be a problem. Is it too difficult for us to play a similar number of extra games in the second half of our season?

Re: Watford game off
We have 21 games to play. I believe that the majority of EFL clubs also have 21 games to play.
We're not in the Cups or Europe.
So, if we are relegated we will have exactly the same number of fixtures to fit in at this stage next season - maybe more if we have cup games or play-offs.
Many people miss the Championship midweek games. We will have a Championship format / schedule of fixtures once we get re-started, so I don't see it as a major problem.
This mid-season break can only benefit us with the players we have missing.
Had we played last night we could easily have found ourselves 9 points behind Watford by the end of the week.

Re: Watford game off
My opinion on this has remained consistent and not flip flopped dependant on who called games off against who.
The PL have to protect the integrity of the competition and if teams can't field strong teams, games have to be postponed. It's the only fair way to finish the season, forcing sides to play weakened patched together 11's was never the answer and was never gonna produce a fair league table at the end. My opinion has not changed now it is us calling off games, I don't see many on here saying ''force Burnley to use the youth team players''
