Gento. Real Madrid. RIP

Post by FCBurnley » Tue Jan 18, 2022 5:21 pm

Sadly passed away aged 88. Not many on here will remember him but he was the ultimate flying winger. One of the all time greats in the almost invincible Real Madrid teams of the 50/60s. RIP

Brilliant left winger and what a forward line he was part of. Canario, del Sol, Di Stefano, Puskas and Gento. Testimony to that RM side that over 130,000 people turned up at Hampden Park to watch them in the 1960 European Cup Final after seeing them dump Glasgow Rangers out of the competition in the semi 12-4 on aggregate.

Will never forget him flying down the wing in the 1960 European cup final in which Real beat Eintracht 7 - 3. Great entertainment and Gento was brilliant.

Growing up he was one of my favourite players in that Real Madrid team who collectively were a joy to watch.

Never saw him play but he was brilliant for Spain on Kick Off 2.

Knew his name.
Though most kids growing up in the early 60s did.
But sadly only seen old media clips of him.

Played in one of the greatest club sides f all time.

What a great clip. No wonder Di Stefano scored so many goals

What a fabulous player, playing in the same forward line with two other superstars Puskas and DiStefano. They were all incredible footballers in an incredible team, but Gento had such pace and skill he was literally unplayable, creating so many chances for Puskas, Distefano and the rest of the team. The problem was in those days you only caught glimpses of their brilliance in the odd televised game or other news clips. I used to love to watch this team. RIP Paco.

That must have been some RM side, and Gento's record of 6 European cups will take some beating.

As mentioned above it's a pity so little footage is available of that era, as there was some great players around at that time.

Yes that is, but it's probably one of the few matches that is available for younger generations to witness the truly great side that Real possessed.

He was one of the best players in any of my Subbuteo teams, almost as good as Pilky.

A true legend. Arguably the best Spaniard ("true" Spaniard as Di Stefano was granted Spanish citizenship in 1956 as was Puskas later on) in the great Real team of the second half of the 50s/early sixties.

Lovely stuff. Looked some player. I yearn for proper wingers. They've almost died out in the modern possession based game.
