David De Gea

Post by PadihamThickNeck » Wed Jan 19, 2022 8:40 pm

How good is he ? For me he’s world class and currently the best goalkeeper in the world.

He’s a better better shot stopper than any goalkeeper although others have an advantage because they can play with there feet (Ederson, Alison etc)

But for me a goalkeeper is to keep the ball out of the net not to be able to play football.

He was the best goalkeeper in the world about 5 years ago but he’s still dropped some real clangers this year.

Previous to this year, he’s had 2-3 years of seriously under par form though.

I'd like to think Mawson and Heaton have helped him improve. He's no Nick Pope though.

Would be even better if he had any sort of decent defence in front of him

Has been left off Utd's retained list

Would appear that contract negotiations aren't as advanced as people have been led to believe.

Also a possibility that with the current obsession with GK's who can play like Ederson/sweeper Keepers, De Gea isn't up to the standard required.

At 32yrs old, he still has plenty of years left in him, so will be interesting to see whether or not he remains in European football or "retires" to Saudi Arabia.

Strange that most GK's quality gets better with age, whilst it seems De Gea saw his best spell in his late 20's but has seemingly peaked.

Still a hell of a goalkeeper and easily in the top three in the PL, but has become progressively more liable for a clanger in the last 2 years.

Needs to reinvent himself, smarten himself up, he's so un Spanish, maybe that's why or because he's been in Manchester for so long.

De Gea always been high class but always drops a few too many clangers ( every keeper has em ) to be truly a “ top 5 in the world keeper imo . One of the best in the world for the last ten yrs is Keylor Navas who was a masterstroke for forest .Neur is also still incredible at 37. Alisson is probs just about the world no 1 but there’s a fag paper between the worlds top 25 keepers .

Allison and Ederson have clangers in them too but have a better defence in front of them

Golden Glove winner last season and you don't win that if you are not a top class keeper.

Heaton to Luton has been blocked apparently.
Henderson is off to forest
De Gea contract ends tomorrow and no new one signed as yet
Utd looking at Inter keeper, Onana.

Heaton could potentially be Utd's 2nd choice keeper next season

If you're ignoring the "sweeper keeper" aspect, I genuinely think Nick Pope has to be in consideration. Maybe not quite as good a shot-stopper as De Gea but better at claiming crosses and dominating his area, imo.

Thing is, I'd take Muric over both of them because, like it or not (and personally I do), a 'keepers ability to "play football" is vital to the way we - and a rapidly growing number of teams - play.
