Skiing
All those posh types spending thousands on skiing gear and trips to the French Alps and a Chorley bloke trudges up Pendle to then become World champion. Can’t say I have ever done any skiing or followed the sport but well done to Dave Ryding on an incredible achievement.

Re: Skiing
So if you have never done it why the derogatory comments? No posh types on any ski trip I've been on.

Re: Skiing
I'm not sure there's a connection between "those posh types spending thousands on skiing gear and trips to the French Alps" or the less well-off spending hundreds on skiing gear and trips to France, Italy, Austria and so on and a bloke who is a competitive skier.
The vast majority of skiers, whatever their background, are recreational ones, some of a fair standard but nowhere near elite level as you often find out hurtling down some unexpectedly difficult black run in Austria for example.......
Ryding's great achievement is learning and developing his skill on the slope at Pendle. However young he started, he simply hadn't the experience the real slopes can bring so he must have been at a hell of a disadvantage.
There's a tiny village near St. Anton , Flirsch, where we often stay and that village has raised at least three World and Olympic champions with three of them coming from the same family, the Matts.
These lads, like many kids out there, will have skied since they could walk and on terrain far more challenging than any plastic slope could offer.
This shows the magnitude of Ryding's astonishing achievement. Talk about against the odds !
To highlight Ryding's greatness by mocking recreational skiers is like pointing out Messi's sublime talent by taking the **** out of non-league football.
There's no link whatsoever.
Oh, and while we're on the subject, have any of the board's skier's got any plans to travel to the slopes over the next few weeks or months ?
I've managed to book two cheeky weeks, one in Obertauern to be followed up by a week in Madonna ( I bet I'm not the only bloke who's looked forward to spending a week in Madonna...

Re: Skiing
Talk about stereotyping. Great sport and holidays. I’m sure the guy who has become world champion has spent a shed load on achieving that goal and spent plenty of time in ‘posh’ resorts. He didn’t just come off Pendle and become World Champion !

Re: Skiing
Crikey accidentally touched a nerve here by raising a light hearted post on a local chap using Pendle to win on a world sport. I am sure plenty of none posh people also enjoy skiing no need to be so defensive.
Best I could hope for was sledging on Begleys field in Barrowford

Absolutely spot on.
Went to Borovets thirty odd years ago and it was like being, I'd imagine, in the Fifties in the Soviet bloc. Astonishing skiing though with quirky hotels and so on. The black market in US dollars made a cheap holiday even more so.
One of our lads broke his leg and we had to run him down to the hospital at Sofia via the resort's meat-wagon. We picked two others up meaning we'd got a van of three skiers all with broken, mangled limbs groaning at every bump, twist or turn.
The general facilities at the hospital were er, basic but the medical ones - the Xray, the surgery were, bizarrely, world class state of the art.
Rog's cast looked and weighed as if it were concrete but the surgeon back home reckoned the bone fix was one of the best he'd seen.
I'd imagine the resorts and faciities have moved on a wee bit since then.

Re: Skiing
In fact, I would go even further to say they are different sports all together. A good recreational skier will move on to ski off piste and different terrain, 99% of people have no desire to start ski racing. It’s like saying messi is good at football because rugby players are rubbish and pick the ball up.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Mon Jan 24, 2022 9:10 amTo highlight Ryding's greatness by mocking recreational skiers is like pointing out Messi's sublime talent by taking the **** out of non-league football.

Re: Skiing
Dave's achievement winning a slalom is brilliant, simply outstanding considering the competition. Winning a downhill however, is a step up in leagues.

Re: Skiing
Brilliant effort by DR. I remember we went to ski Rossendale for a team bonding exercise many years ago. Two lads who claimed they could ski, went from the top and ended up in a mangled heap in the car park after failing to stop.
