Most number of grounds
No, not who has done "The 92" or been to the most grounds but something that got me thinking the other night.
Which club have we played at the most number of different grounds? For example we will have played Spurs at The Turf, WHL, old Wembley, new Wembley and the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. My initial query came from the upcoming Brighton game where we would have played at The Goldstone, Withdean, Amex and The Turf. Did we play them when they were squatting at Gillingham? Could there have been more? Cup semi finals at a neutral ground for example.
One for the historians/stattos.....

Re: Most number of grounds
Never played Rotherham at the Don Valley other than at reserve team level but we have played away games against Bristol Rovers at three venues.
Re: Most number of grounds
We played Spurs at Villa Park in the FA cup semi in 61.
Did we ever play them at Northumberland Park? They didn't move to WHL until 1899.

Re: Most number of grounds
I don't know if we played them at Northumberland Park but I know Spuds weren't a league team until the 1900s. They were the last non-league team to win the FA Cup in 1901.
Re: Most number of grounds
Just dug out the old Chronicles book...
Didn't play Spurs until January 1906. The beat us 2-0 at WHL.
So we never played them at Northumberland Park.

I'll need to check facts. I'm sure some Wimbledon fans started making trip from south west London to MK the first season their club moved.maccclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 5:16 pmControversial.

Facts checked: Wimbledon played at National Hockey Stadium in 2003. They changed name to MK Don's the following season.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 6:24 pmI'll need to check facts. We have Spurs on 6 different grounds at the moment. Any advance on 6, either for Spurs or another club?

Re: Most number of grounds
Be surprised if the six for Tottenham is beaten. In fact for a while I thought it might be seven for Spurs as we played them in the FA Charity Shield in 1921 (after we won the old First Division and they won the FA Cup). However, it transpires that game was played at White Hart Lane.
There are a number of "fives" including Fulham, Chelsea (both detailed higher up the thread) and also Liverpool.
Can anyone name the five grounds on which we've played Liverpool?

Anybody have any literature that might describe some pre-season tournaments where we’ve played teams at other stadiums - abroad maybe?

Also - should 2x wembleys and 2x Spurs stadiums count - technically rebuilt on same sites - isn’t that a bit like triggers broom…?

Not built on the same sites, neither the new Wembley nor the new Spurs grounds are on the same footprint.Selby Claret wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 8:59 pmAlso - should 2x wembleys and 2x Spurs stadiums count - technically rebuilt on same sites - isn’t that a bit like triggers broom…?

Re: Most number of grounds
Admittedly they built half of the new Spurs stadium next to WHL so they could leave it open as long as possible before demolishing to finish the rest of it - but it was still the same site albeit not the same footprint
And the Wembley pitch moved by about 15m that’s all

Would you argue Portman Road as being two stadiums as they used to play next door?

Re: Most number of grounds
It's not exactly the same site. They had to buy up a substantial amount of land for the new stadium.Selby Claret wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 9:59 pmAdmittedly they built half of the new Spurs stadium next to WHL so they could leave it open as long as possible before demolishing to finish the rest of it - but it was still the same site albeit not the same footprint

They still played under that name and the club now called MK claim they were formed in 2004, our game at the Hockey Stadium was in 2003.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 10:36 pmI'm sure they were still Wimbledon when they started playing at the hockey stadium.

People tend to remember Ray Harrison's pivot shot winner in the replay at Maine Road, whilst forgetting the original tie was at Blackburn. Of course the FA Cup final was at The Crystal Palace Stadium in London in 1914.

No, the final game of the sequence was at White Hart Lane where we lost 0-2. There was no game at West Brom.RammyClaret61 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 12:45 amDidn’t we play them at WBA in the final replay of that marathon.

Re: Most number of grounds
Can I throw in Sunderland? A total of seven grounds.
Turf Moor
Newcastle Road
Roker Park
Stadium of Light
Bramall Lane
St. Andrew’s
Douglas Bowl, Isle of Man.
Three of their home grounds, two FA Cup semis in 1913 & the Isle of Man tournament in 1983.

Fair play with the seven......Had a feeling the IOM tournament might play a part in this.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 11:23 amCan I throw in Sunderland? A total of seven grounds.

So, any advance on seven?!.......Sheff Utd must be heading in that direction with the Play-Off final and the two semi-finals at Old Trafford and Goodison Park.

Re: Most number of grounds
Had to do some digging to find when Sunderland moved grounds but we played them a few years before they moved to Roker. I was only prompted to look because of the FA Cup semis. The IOM was an afterthought.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 12:43 pmFair play with the seven......Had a feeling the IOM tournament might play a part in this.

Can’t think of any more for Sheffield United. They’ve always been at Bramall Lane.

There was a likelihood of strange venues during the two war periods unfortunately I have no records for them. The fixtures are listed in Clarets Chronicles but only as H & A.

Re: Most number of grounds
Not the correct team, but in one 12 month period I saw rye play home games at Tunbridge Wells, little common, bexhill, lancing, rye, Ringmer and arundel. Most were as a result of a fire, but the last one was "cricketers on the pitch". Makes me think that in the clubs early days, we may well have played clubs at some odd locations.
