I recall Stone Dry in NZ were one of the best but just did a google and they have seemed to have gone just a UK brand now

Maybe, but one of those brands offers low grade, high priced tat that diminishes their brand. Their top end stuff is fantastic quality. The low priced gear is poor and overpriced

A shame the cheap fashion stuff really detracts from the quality gear you'd be happy to walk, climb, sail etc to the literal ends of the earth in.

But for practical use in the real world, it's about materials, design and utility too.

It's about diminishing returns at the end of the day, a jacket that 10 times the price is usually not 10 times "better".
But if it's your profession or passion hobby you'll pay the extra for the best.

I disagree with this. If all your layers are badly fitted, wrong materials (cotton for example) and don’t repel and disperse water properly, you’re going to have a miserable time in the wrong weather, no matter how many layers you have

It really depends on your needs.
"I want a warm jacket", they probably don't need the most expensive goose-down thing available.

If you want the best jacket for walking, cycling, sailing, or mountaineering you may want an ultra-expensive thing, and it will probably be specific to that task. With the most appropriate materials, design, fit etc.
People buy the best, knowing it's not the best value. That's basic consumerism and the reason we are not all eating 9p baked beans for every meal.

I have a The North Face Mc Murdo parka. It's very warm in fact it's that warm you only get to wear it about 3 times a year. Sometimes I wear it on the Turf on a mid week winter night game. I end up unfastening it during the game to stop myself overheating . It's just too extreme for our climate . might be ok for the Artic or Canadian winters where it's minus 20 but for Burnley it's rare it drops below minus 3-4 during the day time

I’m not fussed about the fashion element, I use Buffalo Systems when I’m out in severe weather, never fails to keep me warm.

Made in the UK too which is a bonus.

The Alpha Industries MA1 bomber jacket was designed with an orange lining so if the pilots who wear them had to bail out in a remote area they could be easier to spot if they turned the jacket inside out to reveal the bright orange lining.

I'm in the market as well. I've had a Rab Nimbus for the last 4 years which has been pretty solid enough for a gold price. It can handle some rain as it's synthetic, and is ok for warmth, however not long ago I went to visit someone and their 3 dogs (pitbulls) jumped up and they've punctured the coat in a few places.

My mother spotted a North Face jacket at a charity shop so took a punt as it was cheap 2nd hand.. I don't know much about it other than it's big, long, heavy, and 550 goose down. I've only worn it 3 times but I'm not convinced I'll wear it much more. I'm very active when I'm out, and I've found this to being the heavy side...when we went to Old Trafford I had to take it off after walking to the game as I was boiling hot . Plus with it being goose down I'd imagine it's no use if it hammers it down.

I'm looking at Montane Duality and Fjallraven Greenland Winter at the moment if anyone has any experience of these?

Oh and btw they are nowhere near £900!!

A good winter fleece and a decent Gore-Tex windbreaker is all I require in the winter months here in the UK. For early spring and autumn, I swap the winter fleece for a lightweight one. Not once have I once been cold or wet.

Canada geese always seem insanely plentiful , why not “ liberate” a couple , get a delicious Sunday lunch AND use the plentiful feathers to line your old jacket ! Job done , money saved and erm kills 2 birds with one stone so to speak ..

Nice one. You'll have to stay at least 15 stone to bear the weight of the thing!! I'm addicted to Frahm for all the reasons you gave below. I invested in them via Crowdcube and have about four of their jackets and a couple of overshirts. Totally bomb proof. The parka is too heavy for a long distance yomp though, use Paramo and Rohan for that.

I thought they’d become a bit “mums at the school gate” like Moncler. Well made but drab looking jackets bought by people because everyone else is wearing them.

I've had a Fjallraven Greenland Winter for about 3 years now as my main coat, and it still looks brand new. It can be re-waxed if needed with a bar (lot easier than messing around with the Barbour tinned stuff).

It's waterproof, windproof, and nice and warm. Looks smart too as an added bonus.

Special 6 jacket it performs the same since the day I bought it 10 - 15 years ago I replaced the side zip once, it's been on plenty of journeys & hasn't disappointed taking all things into consideration, when you posted that link I was tempted to buy another their are that good but I didn't because there's nothing wrong with the 1 I've already got. No fancy ******** does the job.

Which is great for you. But that jacket is nothing close to anything discussed on this thread. Looks like a waterproof smock and was expensive 30 years ago when you bought it (exchanged for green shield stamps)

I have the Buffalo trousers too, they are superb with full length side zips. All the Buffalo gear is built to last and the customer service is second to non, I lost the face baffle off my hood, rang them and asked if I could buy a new one, 'send a stamped addressed envelope and we'll send you one for free'. Had the replacement in less than a week. The Pertex is made in Chorley now, it used to be from Padiham, but nice to know we can still make the best clothing here in the UK.
