Chris Wood…

Post by CoolClaret » Sat Feb 19, 2022 6:16 pm

Firstly, fair play to him for ‘meowing’ at Kurt ‘the animal abuser’ Zouma…. But….

I had forgotten what it was like to play with a striker who could actually play a bit! I mean when Wood wasn’t scoring he was a complete cart horse - actually no worse because his hold up play and technical ability were practically non existent; Weghorst in contrast is a thoroughbred!

We really did get a good deal with that, 13 mill spare and Weghorst?! Excellent business!!

Really a perfect striker for us, helps link defence to attack brilliantly!!

He's an easy target due to his poor showing this season, but he had done very well for us

Absolutely when he scored yes but his all round game was poor - a few Leeds supporting friends of mine said much the same.

Agreed. Wood knew where the goal was if the ball was loose around the penalty box and he was in a bit of form, but he was absolutely garbage at playing the game of football at this level. His touch was laughable and he had no idea where to pass the ball to keep the momentum of a move alive. When he was out of form, every time the ball came near him the move would break down.

I feared we'd bought someone similar but it's clear now he's nothing like Wood. Thank God.

Too early to say VV is better. He certainly has skills Wood hasn’t. However Wood had several seasons with a consistently good return. VV may completely outshine him but scoring in the Premier League is not easy.

Come on, countless times the ball bounced off Wood! For every game like that he had countless where it was like we were playing with 10 men…

Of course usually against West Ham and Brighton as you say he did have some real stormers…

I’m just highlighting how different we are as a team rn when we have someone that can link play and we can get the ball on the deck and play a bit - it’s much, much better.

We often mistake players for fans...they clearly aren't.... but what we DO expect, is 100% every time out. Give us that and you will be forgiven almost anything. Don't, and you are having it. And after this season, Wood is getting what he deserves, and it's being pointed out - which is fair enough imho.

He did OK for us, and with the £25million he did us even better; I wish the guy no harm, just hope he continues to not score for the Geordies and he takes the drop with them.

Only some.

Leaving, like he did, and when he did, means that he lost any good will from me.

As others have said, let it go. Newcastle's money spends as well as anyone elses. Good business for BFC.

Look forward to welcoming you to t'Turf in May ;)

Wood is a good goal scorer but a fairly average footballer in the truest sense of the word.

Weghorst looks to be an excellent footballer and hopefully he’ll prove to be a good goal scorer as well.

Yeah absolutely fair comment - I just feel like if Wood if not scoring harmed us at times…. A little like the Charlie Austin paradox if that makes sense?

We look so much better rn at moving the ball through the lines and keeping hold of it…. IMO that’s partly because the ball isn’t bouncing off our striker and moves breaking down

Wood's 46 goals previously kept us in this Division, not single-handedly, but without them we would have been down in a couple of seasons.

However I read somewhere that Wout's eight shots on target in just three games were the highest for any Burnley player this season and that was before today which puts into perspective Wood's contribution this season.

Watched all the WHU v Newcastle game and thought Wood had a good game
Defensively he won countless headers from corners and set pieces.
Up front he held the ball up well and won many headers.
Still think we had an excellent deal and have an excellent replacement and money to hopefully spend at the end of the season

I'm not looking forward to the FA enquiry into how we were allowed to sell him for £25 million before spending £12 million on Wout. It's blatant cheating and I fear it will bite us on the arse with a potential points deduction.

When we signed him Leeds fans were adamant he wouldn't score many in this league, 49 goals later he proved them wrong.

Absolute no brainer for Wood, fighting relegation if he stayed, fighting it if he left.

Why not improve your wage for doing the same thing?

He gained, we gained.

Got to defend Wood a bit here today I feel

He played okay, but never had a chance to score because he was well marked by Zouma and Dawson, and none of the crosses went anywhere near him

I'm not quite sure what the Newcastle fans are expecting

But we do appear to have got a better player and a spare £12 million

But he said he needed a move, so no worries with him here

Not going to have a dig at Wood who did a great job for us and was as much a victim of our poor approach to games as the other way round.

But I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Weghorst looks like a significant upgrade. Will he score 10+ goals per season in the PL, time will tell - but I suspect he may. But the significant difference is how the ball sticks to him and how he quickly and accurately brings others into play. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we’ve committed more men into attacks, knowing that he will retain possession and find a man.

Early days, but let's hope he's an upgrade that sustains top form for 3 seasons.

Yes, if Newcastle's motivation in signing him was to weaken us (given he's been a regular starter I'm not sure how big a factor it was btw) it's certainly backfired.

That's a very good point. From the second half of the United game onwards, when he really started to settle in, there's been a lot more attacking purpose to our play because the ball tends to stick to him and he brings others into the game so well

Jay and Lennon in particular have shown great movement off the ball as a result.

There seems to have been a real shift in mentality from setting up to win, rather than setting up not to lose

Chris Wood has been a top player for us. However this season we relied too heavily on his output and frankly it was in short supply. That said, I've had a feeling for a while that our last game of the season at home to Newcastle could be a winner take all match. That being the case I pray the Woody doesn't come back to haunt us.

Interesting point.
So I have to ask: how often had we lined up with CW, JR and AL in the same starting 11?

I wish Woody all the best I listened to the West Ham v Newcastle game today and as Dean Ashton said Wood knows his limitations but he's there. When you listen to radio commentaries and a name constantly gets mentioned you know that player is getting involved and that was Wood today. It was time for a change and I think we have benefited UTC.

If he wasn't scoring, he was completely useless, I used to get pelters on here for saying that when he played for us, now I can say it freely.
He reminded me of Michael Ricketts or Iwelumo when they played here at the back end of their careers.

At least Gifton used to stick his arse in there, Delroy Facey had a bit of pace and even an overweight Dele Adebola threw himself around. Statue Wood just stood offside waiting for us to win a corner.

I know you meant the one that left for charlton, was being pedantic. I think he had a very poor attitude, but he was a good footballer at the level we were at.

That’s just not true though. He went through spells of poor form but he offered far more than just goals. So to say he was otherwise completely useless is exactly why you’ll have got pelters.

Defensive headers, sure.

Wood played every minute of every game, took penalties and the team was shaped and formed to play around HIM and to his strengths. He offers so little, 10 goals a season should be the bare minimum.

He's an easy target due to his poor showing this season, but he had done very well for us
I would point toward what Wout has produced in the last 3 games as opposed to Wood in the last 10 for both us and Newcastle….

Defensive headers, sure.

Wood played every minute of every game, took penalties and the team was shaped and formed to play around HIM and to his strengths. He offers so little, 10 goals a season should be the bare minimum.
He ran the channels, won aerial duels, held the ball up, bullied defenders, defended from the front and as you point out contributed when we defended set pieces. To say he was completely useless other than his goals is a perfect example of why your comments attract ridicule. The constant hyperbole and extreme positions you take makes it hard for you to be taken seriously.

That’s just not true though. He went through spells of poor form but he offered far more than just goals. So to say he was otherwise completely useless is exactly why you’ll have got pelters.
Spot on that. When he was poor he was really poor, as most of this season.
His record for us overall, before this season, was excellent.
A club like us doesn’t carry players for any sustained length of time and maintain the success we’ve had at this level.

held the ball up? defended from the front? bullied defenders? Are we talking about Barnes or Wood here?

A 1 in 3 striker at premier league level is obviously a good player. I'm very glad to see we've replaced him with a striker who also looks very good.

No sense tying ourselves in knots trying to prove someone who was fans' and players' choice as player of the year only a few months ago was rubbish all along.
