It is open to debate who started it.

I would come down on the West/NATO/Ukraine started it.

Look up how many people were killed or injured in the east of the country between 2014 and Feb 2022.

Nope, it just brutally suppresses ethnic minorities within its own borders, and threatens countries that it believes should still be within their ‘sphere of influence’.

Look I am open to some Ukrainian provocation prior to 2014 and I have no doubt the west will have driven some of it but nobody forced Russia to put boots and armoured vehicles on Ukrainian soil in 2014 or last year it was there choice. It is clear that Ukrainians have fired artillery into Donbas and Luhansk but are you saying that was without the militias firing at them first? That I do not believe 1 bit and I have never heard of them firing into Crimea for example before last year maybe I just missed it or maybe there is nothing in range that is relevant.

Worth mentioning that the militias with Russian support seized Kharkiv in 2014, but got kicked out very quickly because support (and I'm not sure you can call it support) for actually living in Russia as opposed to Ukraine is not high

Course, you could say "we need to have a referendum"

Of course, there are about 5 million Ukrainians who are so keen on living under Russian control they have fled to anywhere but there, and then there are about 500,000 who Russia "evacuated" into Russia, so just how fair would one be?

Whether anyone likes to admit it or not, the West made a huge mistake letting Russia think it could enjoy the benefits of Western money while being allowed to invade countries it used to own

On the fourth time it did it, the West realised that he just wouldn't stop and here we are

Its the Ukrainians we should all feel sorry for, and we should make sure that cities, towns and villages that Russian shellfire has completely destroyed are rebuilt and that Ukraine is allowed to choose its own path

Its worth stressing this again on a thread as depressing (but sadly probably needed) as this

We need peace in this asap, but it can't be peace that only postpones more problems

And because of the situation in Russia, there are no "good" endings to this

Russia loses, and we face a potential destabilised country with a huge grudge against the West

Russia wins, and we have a much stronger and victorious Russia right on the borders of NATO

Of course the West could have done things differently, but to pretend (using unverified youtube videos and facebook conspiracy theories) that the reason for this war is not almost 100% Russian is wrong, and unfortunately results in people putting down links to Russian disinformation sites

The internet is fantastic as an open source for enthusiastic amateurs like ourselves, but it is also full of s**t that isn't worth anything

I think people have to remember that

Nah, Russia can go f&@k themselves. I’ve rarely met such odious, rude, ****. Admittedly they are the richer “elite” and not your ordinary slave / citizen. But they just don’t deserve any sympathy.

According to the No 1 counter of stuff in this conflict, Germany are now the 2nd biggest arms supplier to Ukraine

Which is quite a change of events to put it mildly

The more Russia attacks, the more hawkish (for want of a better world) Western allies will get, and we've already done the maths, that is a economic and production battle that Russia cannot possibly win

And we have agreed to double the number of Challenger 2 tanks we give Ukraine from 14 to 28. I do hope we give them all the additional armour kit as they will then have a 75ton but still fairly agile (across country) behemoth.

For Russia substitute Nazi Germany as they were allowed to walk into Austria Czechoslovakia until Poland. Replace with the Donbas, Crimea and now all of Ukraine. It does take the "civilised and democratic West" some time to wake up. If only we had left Afghanistan Iraq and Libya alone maybe we would have awoken from our slumbers earlier over this.
Not going to end well for any of us or the Russians
The worst scenario is we make peace with Putin who keeps Crimea and the Donbas and other bits. That would allow him to re-arm re-group and have another go when he has restocked his army and air force

Russia is welding ageing naval turrets onto old armoured vehicles to make crude tanks as Vladimir Putin’s forces face worsening arms shortages.

The crudely engineered vehicles are being deployed in a likely attempt to shoot down Ukrainian drones as the armed forces grapple with crippling shortages of fighting machines and ammunition.

New footage from an undisclosed location appears to show a 25mm 2M-3 twin-barrelled naval anti-aircraft turret fitted to a Soviet-era MT-LB amphibious fighting vehicle to form a new hybrid weapon.

The amalgamation, which was constructed with parts manufactured as early as 1945, could be seen being transported by rail, potentially to Ukraine.

It depends where you are firing it to I guess if you are firing into a known densely populated area then that would be no but if it is an area that just includes soldiers or out in the open then likely it would be okay. The US, UK ETC in Afghan and Iraq had no fire zones over religious sites, Sites of cultural importance etc and avoided engaging the enemy as much as possible in them. I suspect the Ukrainians and definitely the Russians don’t use a similar system.

Just to correct what I said yesterday...now transpires that we are not sending additional tanks to the Ukraine. The Ukrainian Ambassador apparently said we were but this has now been denied by the MOD. For those interested there is a brief synopsis of the last 12 months in UKDefenceJournal. Bit one sided but worth a read.

Got to admit, and I hate to criticise the Ukrainian military, but I'm not sure hanging on to Bakhmut is a very good idea

Unless they really are confident that the Russians are taking losses they can't afford

I guess they are confident, and I would think the reason the Ukrainians are confident of inflicting more significant losses on Wagner/Russians is that the invaders have put so much effort into occupying this small town in order to claim a victory of any sort that they are not thinking rationally and will throw in anything in order to achieve this. If the Russians succeed it's hardly a major strategic breakthrough yet if they fail it would surely be catastrophic for Russian morale and particularly Wagner and may increase the suggested feud between Wagner and the Russian MoD, or indeed between Prigozhin and Putin.

Win-win for the Ukrainians whatever happens as long as they don't suffer unnecessarily themselves.

This is brilliant -

It looks a bit silly (and a bit unbalanced) but if it is effective in its role I see nothing wrong in it. Gun turrets take time to build so if you have one that's ready to use, use it.

Naval turrets have been used on land before. Here's a turret from the German battleship Gneisenau in Denmark after it was removed from the ship during an attempted refit:

I think the effort made to make what is essentially a crap ZSU-23-4 without radar makes you wonder why they are bothering

Good against slow drones and perhaps a badly flown helicopter but that will be about it

I only wish the media would at least offer even a semblance of realistic reporting on the Russians . It’s 80 yr old drunken conscript farmers fighting with shovels , and welded together bits of WWII detritus ,and because they ran out of Ammo 6 months ago they just walk into the enemy armed with only moonshine vodka and curses.
While much of the above has real truths , the casualties are shocking on both sides .While reducing the Russians to joke caricatures might be fun propaganda ,it’s masking the sheer obliteration they’re still capable of causing .
