Russia Invades

Post by TsarBomba » Thu Feb 24, 2022 6:39 am

The Russian invasion has begun.

Air strikes across Ukraine including Kiev and Lviv.

Airports severely damaged.

TASS reporting Ukraines air defences completely neutralised.

Reports of paratroopers being dropped above Kharkiv

Ukraine reporting hundreds likely to be killed already.

Would expect the air assault to continue for some time before ground forces move in.

I just don't understand their motive if I'm being honest. Usually behind war there is greed but the parallels to this and WW2 are scary.
Putin just comes across as a mad dictator.

I hope we don't see the start of WW3 but honestly this has me more scared than ever.

He’s an absolute t*** is Putin. If people haven’t had it hard enough over the past 2 years with the pandemic, the idiot decides to kick off a war for no good reason. Not sure how far this goes and to what extent the west gets involved.

Unverified videos of Russian troops on the outskirts of Kharkiv.

Russian troops advancing along seven main axis, towards Kiev.

Hope Russia have a different economic plan to one they currently have, because it won't be viable after today

Which of course brings its own dangers, but if he gets away with this, then its going to embolden him more

They don't want Ukraine in nato.
Putin has weakened USA international resolve via Trumps ego and now, the time is right.
A very over simplified view, but roughly along the road to where Russia is at.

Freeze them out of Swift. Ban any commercial flight from European airspace that has Russia as a destination or departure. Full import/export embargo.

Nothing measures can be harsh enough. Should matter if it hurts us too so long as it impacts them more.
Too much Russian money in this country & politics to see us properly take a stand though.

US Republicans are divided on whether to support Putin or not. If even the US is not unified in its response to this, very little chance of much happening.

Problem with sanctions is that Putin has spent years building the country’s reserves. This has been done by reducing their reliance on the $ and other currencies.

They are stable enough economically to let this run for a while.

I think the NATO thing is the reason too in that I believe they wrote it in the Ukraines constitution that they could opt to join if they wanted to.

He is just mad and wants to do what he wants. He doesn’t recognise the Ukraine as a sovereign state so he doesn’t care.

God knows what is going to happen but power clearly
does crazy things to people.

This would never happened if Trump was still POTUS Biden is weak and Putin knows this just like Obama was when the Russians took the Crimea.

Putin is a dictator like Hitler and Stalin before him and will eventually fall on his sword as they all do, he will leave a trail of misery and destruction at home and abroad, before the weak, woke West comes to its senses, regains its pride and fights back.

The sanctions for this need to be absolutely crushing. Even if it means they have to harm the entire population severely, and even if it risks his throwing caution to the wind and moving on NATO countries. The punishment for this has to be so severe that his country is incapable of financing any future invasions, and also to deter the likes of China from moving on Taiwan. And god knows China will be more vulnerable to these kinds of sanctions than Russia is.

It's a battle we can't possibly win, but we can't afford to lose.
Sanctio s aren't going to bother him, he has to have already planned for that.
Personally, I'd give him a deadline and nuke him. I'm aware that that will have catastrophic consequences for this country, and I wouldn't take the step lightly, but if he isn't stopped now he'll just continue swallowing country after country, until the old iron curtain counties are back in subjugation.
To dither and talk while he acts would be a big mistake, bullies only understand one thing.

Estonia and Lithuania have triggered Article 4 of the NATO treaty
Article 4
The Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened.

Damned if you do damned I'd you don't. What's the US (regardless of party in power) meant to do, put troops on the Ukrainian border and make Putin's false narrative of a Russia surrounded closer to reality.

What the hell do you expect him to do, put the US military into Ukraine? And what do you think the other guy would do? That guy's bloody cheerleading the Russians right now.

Unless you're willing to put our militaries into Ukraine to prevent this then sanctions is all we have. You're calling him weak (before you even know his response) so i'd be genuinely interested in what you think he should have done/be doing to prevent this?

Don’t start.

For once, can we not get a thread pulled for pettiness.

This is potentially huge, for all of us.

Stock markets down 3-4%.

Crude oil up to $102.

tbh, Oil price going up is a good thing. Maybe now we'll take seriously our over-reliance on it as a source of energy. Especially when it (and gas) comes from Russia.

I can't believe any government of ours would put the people of Ukraine above our own population. They will be punished at the ballot box if they did. The average UK resident is more concerned about inflation (especially energy but food too) and their own world. Sure, we'll make good sounding noises but no more.

I also cynically suspect that 'severe sanctions' employed by our current government are more tokenism then real hurt for Russians or our financial sector. We're not really interested.

Like Crimea, once the dust settles, it will be back to normal and Putin will know they can do what they like in their region. He has the measure of us.

If the world was absent of nuclear weapons we would already have troops on the ground, and Russia would quickly be defeated.

As it stands there’s nothing we can do without the threat of a world ending war.

He's been planning this for years and Ukraine won't be the last one, he wants to rebuild/restore the boarders of the former USSR.

Russia has been paying off its debts, so any financial sanctions from the west won't bother them as much.
Countries like China and India will ignore western sanctions, they value Russia as a trading partner.
Russian Oil/Gas is a big stick for them to use when dealing with Europe/EU and they've done well manoeuvring themselves into that position.

Russia were never really dealt with after Crimea, so they basically tested the water and knew what they'd get away with and have now decided to go all in to take Ukraine.

Never condone war but ‘understand’ Putin’s concerns regards Ukraine/NATO
Are you saying Russia has a legitimate reason to believe NATO aggression on Russian sovereign territory is likely or even possible under current treaty articles?

Russian Oil/Gas is a big stick for them to use when dealing with Europe/EU and they've done well manoeuvring themselves into that position.

It has certainly helped that we've bent over for them to rodger us with that stick by choosing to rely on them for oil and gas instead of moving to renewable energy as a primary source of our needs. Oops.

Tragic for the people of Ukraine, they must be absolutely terrified. I hope Europe (including the UK) does all it can to help resettle as many people as possible. There could be millions of refugees as a result of this and they will need help.

Hopefully the West hit Russia with crippling economic sanctions as a result of this.

Oil was heading north of $100/b even without this situation, it’s just accelerated it.

On the plus side, if this ends in nuclear war, at least all those hours playing fall out 4 were not wasted.

Anyone know where I can get some radaway?
