Don't we still have cadet training at schools, not to mention the ATC, Sea Cadets and Army Cadets? I was in The ATC aged 14 and we learnt to fire .303 Lee Enfields.

Philips doing a twitter thread on the US press conference with General Milley and the US Defence sec

Big takeaway so far

Negative

- Milley tried to contact his Russian counter part last night and wasn't put through. Hard to overstate how bad that is, as it could have really helped, hope its a one off

Positive
- Sanctions mean that Russia cannot replenish its stocks of advanced weapons. They will only get weaker, and their tank and equipment stocks have been absolutely shredded by the fighting (losses classified says Milley)
- Zero chance of Russia conquering Ukraine
- Alliance talking about how to improve Ukraines air defences

Well, no

Its an Ukrainian S-300 SAM missile, fired only because Ukraine is being attacked by Russian missiles in revenge for Russia losing yet another battle on the ground in Ukraine

You are quite right that its dangerous times, but launching missiles to attack non-military targets close to the Polish border is very provocative by Russia, and quite in keeping with the lunacy of this entire sorry episode

I don't worry about the reactions of NATO btw, I worry about the hotheads and fanatics in the Kremlin who are happily swallowing the propaganda they have been fed for decades and haven't worked out yet how badly they are off compared to NATO
Sorry Lancaster, I should have put a winking smiley after my comment (but felt uncomfortable doing so). I realised the reports were of a Ukranian missile used in a defensive intention, just wanted to make the point that all leaders need to keep cool heads.

It is also yet to be decided where it was fired from, as both the USA and Ukraine say the Russians have been converting old anti-aircraft SAM missiles for offensive artillery firing. There is little doubt it is known who fired it, but as pointed out on Newsnight last night: it may be seen as more useful to keep that info to themselves; until NATO are ready to take action or not… an announcement now would tell the Russians what might be happening and preparation time.

Not sure they will get a mention on this thread though, given its the "good guys" committing the atrocities
Examples please.

There aren't any good guys on this thread, there are two countries that are at war, and in war, atrocities and war crimes happen

The idea is there not to be any war at all, and for that to happen, the aggressor country (in this case Russia) has to be defeated so it can't do it again

I don't think I can put it more simply than that

I'm sure it is standard military practice to disorientate prisoners for security reasons so looking at that video I don't see an issue, what I do have an issue with is torture, rape, murder, missiles aimed at hospitals. Gaffer tape sound hands and eyes, come on its akin to a middle class party game.

Not saying that the pic is fake btw, as I've no idea, but every pic of prisoners I've seen has them with eyes covered by tape and their hands tied together, normally with either blue or yellow tape

I'm not sure that counts as a war crime, though I'm sure that both sides are committing them

Worth repeating that its not that anyone wants this to continue, and would be happy if it finished right now

But with the huge caveat that Russia has to lose

if it doesn't, then it will try this again, and it will be worse

All Russia are doing now is wasting missiles, and precision ones at that

When was rthe last time they actually hit something of military significance?

Could be staged (but unlikely), essentially some Russian troops got away over the Dnipro with nothing but their underwear, leaving everything behind

I assume a “logistics facility” was of military significance?

But they do seem to need a lot of these to strike anything. It must be costly, but more importantly they must be running out!

Hardly going to get above 0 for the next couple of days.

Hopefully the Ukrainian army has better winter wear/equipment than most of the Russian army.

It's not difficult to understand why you think that given the direction of this thread.
What baffles me, is that people who I speculate to be much smarter than you, hold the same devout beliefs as to what is going on in Ukraine currently.
The bloodlust and fascination of war mechanics, coupled with a (less than subtle) nudge in a direction of thought by the world police has sent some of you round the bend.

I often wonder what would have happened if Ukraine had Himars and the modern artillery supplied by the West right at the start of the invasion when the Russians had that massive convoy.

That massive convoy never moved anyway didn't it?

The Ukrainians kept ambushing bits of it and forced it off road, where it does appear the majority got stuck and captured

Mate there is room for both points of view on here, but don’t reck it by silly comments like this.

Anyway I am pro Ukraine in this but I accept and everyone needs to be aware that both sides are committing/ have commited war crimes and atrocities but war is not black and white it never has been and never will be. The problem for Russia is that they are the aggressors and there would be no war crimes/ atrocities if they hadn’t invaded.

Once the fighting stops though there needs to be a long hard think about who lives where and what is Ukraine and what is Russia. It is clear that a large proportion of some areas of Ukraine want to be Russian though so maybe they should be allowed to be whether that mean moving too or certain areas that are now Ukraine legally and properly becoming part of Russia.

From your link I found this interesting thread on 'Indexing Incidents in Russia':

https://twitter.com/HarladF/status/1593951731334930433

The gas pipeline you mention is incident 162. The first is dated April 21st.

Why doesn’t Ukraine ‘assemble’ their own generic missiles (with no identification as to where the parts came from) and then say to Russia - every Russian missile fired into Ukraine will be answered by a Ukrainian missile fired into Russia?

I think that would give Russia the excuse to declare full war on Ukraine, also Ukraine hold the moral high ground of just defending their country, they are not at war with the Russian people.

I think that would give Russia the excuse to declare full war on Ukraine, also Ukraine hold the moral high ground of just defending their country, they are not at war with the Russian people.
they don't have the weapons to do that, just like they didn't at the beginning of the war

Also because Zelensky’s not stupid enough to attack Russian soil directly. Putin would almost be grateful for it if they did, because he could then use it as propaganda via his state controlled media. Something along the lines of ‘this is why we must fight’ blah blah blah….

You really think there’s not just as many vids of UKR’s military captured /blown apart / broken and demoralised? Posting this sort of content along with vids of blowing up tanks /soldiers etc from either side is the ultimate voyeurs cowardice . There’s no winners in this conflict , though perhaps a bit of common decency rather than gloating over captured terrified simpletons would be more appropriate ?
