More reports of HIMARS strikes on the bridges over the Dnieper around Kherson

I understand from a political point of view that Russia wants to hold on to territory, but it could close down the entire from the sea to practically the Donbass by pulling its forces out of Kherson and just holding the line of the River

I guess its politically unthinkable but it would make a huge difference to their ability to defend, and severely limit where Ukraine could attack
More artillary strikes on the Antonivskyi bridge overnight and very well clustered over 30+ seconds (first link) - looks to have done some serious damage (second link). Not a section collapse and clearly personnel can still traverse the river here but looks like moving heavy equipment over there may be difficult.
As discussed above- maybe time for Russians to beat the retreat from north of the river in that area before a further strike takes a section completely out.

Lot of strikes there!! If they hit the intended target you’d imagine the Russians are running out of time with that bridge!

They have now lost 40k troops according to the Ukrainians.

In a new letter, Spartz writes that "lack of appointment of anti-corruption prosecutor, concerns raised by military personnel, require attention from (Biden's) administration."

The US and the Brits must be concerned with the history of corruption in that part of the world that their weaponry is going into the right hands and not being sold off to the Russians by corrupt Ukrainian politicians.

Lets face it the Ukrainians and Russians are very similar in more ways than one and neither are to be trusted

Struggling to get ships to take the grain out of Odessa due to Russian mines.

Nothing is straight forward. Shipping companies don't want to risk there fleet as they more than likely won't be insured and the only country that can help them are the Russian minesweepers

I can see the grain rotting in the warehouses and I wouldn't be surprised if the Russians new that would be the case

Not sure if UKR have the manpower and ordnance to re-take Kherson , but the morale boost would be phenomenal and would almost guarantee more western weaponry . Good to see the HIMARS etc being put to good use, though no idea how much stockpile of missiles they have .

Things appear to be heading towards a stalemate: Russia still has an overwhelming artillery advantage but lack of personnel, Ukraine needs more weapons & artillery

And…. Ukraine is looking for a Russian soldier who shot down an allied K-52 helicopter in the Kherson region on July 26.
According to Ukrainian law, Russian servicemen have the right to receive rewards for shooting down an enemy helicopter.

Bit more on sanctions

Essentially Russia can make as much money as it wants from oil and gas, but if it can't get hold of the advanced electronics it needs for its economy, then it can't produce or manufacture the high end military tech it needs, and anything spare that the military need will disappear really quickly

Interesting

Last twenty four hours though have made it pretty clear that being taken prisoner by some Russian units is not recommended, and that will just mean that less Ukrainian troops will surrender (which means fiercer fighting, and more casualties) and will almost certainly result in tit for tat retaliation

I seriously don’t like the current situation. Pelosi is in a plane to Taiwan.
You can track it on flight radar 24
Just search for SPAR19

China said they would shoot it down if it tried to go.

Fingers crossed this does not turn out to be a bad day for humanity.

It would destroy everything China has been trying to do for the last 20 years… kill their Western markets and set China firmly in the Axis of Evil camp…. Hard to believe they would think they could get away with something as aggressive against the third in line to the Whitehouse. Sabre rattling, one hopes and expects.

Had a momentary struggle with weighing the lives of all the other people on the plane and everyone else who would die in the fighting that happened afterwards vs my absolute disdain for her. I ended up hoping the Chinese don't shoot at her plane, but it was close.

Seriously, I'm not worried. I can't imagine the Chinese being willing to go into total economic collapse over her flying to Taiwan.

US Policy towards China is getting a lot more aggressive

Helps explain their support for Ukraine as well, as a defeated Russia means they can put a lot more resources into the Indo-Pacific region

If China tried to invade Taiwan there is every possibility that to they would be defeated, with 100 miles of water separating them the only access is by an amphibious landing, so good luck to that

They have massively increased their naval and amphibious ability in the past decade, and are on course to be the largest navy in the world

If (and its a huge if) they can match USN carrier ability and experience (a huge ask as they have been the best (and the only) real experts in this field since WWII), then they have more of a chance than they do now

But the huge fleet/amphib forces they are building are for one thing and one thing only, dominating the sea areas around China, and as that includes huge areas that actually belong to other nations, that is a problem

I would love China to put the cat among the Pigeons and attack the Eastern Siberian oil fields to the North West I wonder what the reaction would be from the US.

This would be the ultimate embarrassment for Putin and Russia and the end of Russia as a serious global threat

Taiwan have been preparing for this a lot longer than the Ukraine has.
I don't believe the day will come when China stop talking about reclaiming Taiwan, but I doubt it will ever dawn. There are far more important issues to concentrate on in a modern world. Russia might not see the down side of reverting to the dark ages, but I'm sure China does.

I disagree.

I see many parallels between the two.

Russia annexed Chrimea and we the west did nothing which empowered Putin to invade Ukraine again.

China effectively annexed Hong Kong going against the written agreement with the UK. We the west did nothing, that’s why they feel empowered to take back Taiwan.
