Baz Luhrmann's next film .... " Elvis "

Post by Clarets4me » Fri Feb 25, 2022 7:22 pm

Trailer released a few days ago for this film, due for release on 24th June, starring Tom Hanks and Austen Butler ... the trailer and accompanying " reaction " videos has had over 25m views in less than a week. Looks like it could be a corker ....

A lot of the younger generation who may never have been exposed to Elvis would be amazed/shocked at the impact he had on music.

I can certainly appreciate the impact he had - I really struggle with him and his music though. I’ve always found his voice and mannerisms hugely annoying. Perhaps my view is influenced by the number of god awful ‘tribute’ acts and old fellas still attempting to recreate the Elvis look.

Like him or not, I’m sure it’ll be an interesting story and a film worth watching.

And that is the annoying thing. The tribute acts do not do him justice. Hopefully this film can help people appreciate that. I’ve grown up on him as my dad was a massive fan.

I watched it last night, its very Baz Lurhmann which takes it away from your usual bland bio-pics that are usually churned out. The soundtrack is very good, with remixed covers from modern artists and enhanced original versions from Elvis performing in concert and it blends nicely, with subtle hints of his pop music in the orchestral bits in the emotional scenes. The film is well paced considering its 160 mins run time. I think fans of Elvis will really like it, it really captures the politics and how music influenced the 60's and 70's but also educates younger viewers on why he was such an icon too.

It’s an amazing film. It beats bohemian rhapsody for me and that was outstanding. It’s very difficult to play Elvis without coming across a joke, but he did it so well.

While I'm not a huge Elvis fan, I do like Baz Luhrmann's films, and if anybody can pull off a biopic of such a well talked about figure, it's him.

I think it was the late great John Lennon who said “before Elvis, there was nothing”

I remember hearing “that’s alright mama” and being blown away. My mam never had it off the record player. Been a fan ever since.

Going next week. Can’t wait.

If it is anything like the 1964 Elvis film Kissin' Cousins it should be good.

Just back from the film ... it was terrific !
Perhaps slightly overlong, but both Austen Butler as Elvis and Tom Hanks as the Colonel were fantastic !

It certainly showed the scandalising effect he had on middle America, in bringing black music and style into the mainstream, especially in the segregated south.

Unfortunately, Dr Nichopolous gets a bad " rap " but he did at least try to wean Elvis off the prescription medications. He spent hours emptying pill cases, and refilling them with placebos and vitamins. He put him on diets, which he would follow for a few days, and also liased with Priscilla to get Elvis into a " drying out " clinic, but he refused to go, worrying about the fans reaction. Of course, in the modern age, he would undertake the treatment, then do an " Oprah " interview, admit to some misjudgements in his personal life, and then be praised by one and all for his courage, and bringing awareness of addiction to prescription medications to a wider audience.

One of the true villains was Dr Elias Ghanem, a Las Vegas doctor who basically prescribed on request, and ended up heading the Las Vegas Athletic Commission, controlling the Boxing in Nevada. He was investigated by the FBI, but no charges were ever brought, despite his prescribing for Elvis, Johnny Cash, Liberace, Glen Campbell and other celebrities, all of whom had addiction issues.

I saw it last night.

As others have commented it was a bit long but Hanks and Butler both gave outstanding performances.

Saw it this afternoon and really enjoyed it.

As others have said a tad overlong but having said that it didn't drag at all.

Tom Hanks was superb as always but Austin Butler was outstanding as The King.

If Rami Malik deserved an Oscar for Bohemian Rhapsody then AB must be in the running for one this time around.

Just got back from watching it in Burnley ... Fantastic and you didn't realise just how long it is untill you come out of the Cinema and look at your watch. Brilliant biopic as others have said Austin Butler is outstanding as is Hanks and the rest of the supporting cast 🙂

Just been to watch this…. Really enjoyed it.

I was just 12 when Elvis left the building, and I remember it all too well. I was brought up listening to him, my mam was Elvis crackers. Seemed like it affected everyone at the time when he died. Right up there with JFK being shot and the moon landings for how it gripped everyone. Not sure we will ever see the like again. Maybe when HM passes….
I know the kids of today go on about one direction, and we’ve been thru the loss of many great artists thru the years, but nothing has come remotely close to the fever that gripped the world when Elvis made his mark on it, and of course his untimely demise. Been dead 45 years and STILL the king.

Not really a huge Elvis fan, but I can totally appreciate what an iconic figure he was in the early years of rock n roll.

The 1st few Number 1's on the " Billboard " sales charts in 1956 included " Memories are made of this " by Dean Martin, " Lisbon Antigua " by Nelson Riddle and his orchestra and Les Baxter's " The poor people of Paris " ....

On April 21st, Elvis Presley went to Number 1 with " Heartbreak Hotel ", which must have been a heck of a culture shock for middle America, especially with his stage gyrations. For the next two years, Presley had the No.1 selling singles for 56 out of those 104 weeks, talk about chart domination !

Just a quick update, I did wonder how this film would fare at the " Box Office ", given Elvis Presley departed this earth 45 years ago next month ...

It's taken $186.1m at the Box Office worldwide so far, 57.3% of that being in the United States & Canada, and 42.7% from the rest of the world. Warner Bros. are pleasantly surprised, although Tom Hanks will have been a big draw, I suspect. The production budget was $85m, so Warner Bros. will be in profit by now, without accounting for sales of Streaming rights, DVD/Blue Ray, Cable & Satellite rights etc.

Judging by the Cinema listings, this looks to be the last week of it's run, which coincides with the 45th Anniversary of Presley's death on Tuesday ...
it's now taken over $253 m at the Box Office, and it's certainly a film that benefits from the big screen experience, if you've been meaning to see it.
