Eddie Howe

Post by RVclaret » Sat Mar 05, 2022 5:43 pm

Possible shout for manager of the season?

Under significant pressure to turn around results (hadn’t won 1 game all season) and has done so even with injuries to key players. 8 games unbeaten and 5 wins from those 8. Playing far better football than they did under dinosaur Bruce too. Their main £40m signing hasn’t started a game yet either. Proved to be an outstanding appointment.

You get some great stuff on here after a defeat but Eddie Howe for manager of the season is thinking outside the box! Well done sir :D

As I said their £40m signing hasn’t started a game yet. £25m Chris wood hasn’t got one goal or assist. Plus ASM and Wilson suffered injuries. The only new signings that start have been Burn, Trippier (also missing from their last 2 wins) and Targett (loan). Just rubbish if you can’t see it’s his coaching that’s turned them around, listen to their player interviews and what fans say, they love him.

Let’s see if he keeps them up. As others have said it wouldn’t have taken much of a manager to keep them up. He’s hardly done a Sir Alex so far.

The amount spent in January is pretty irrelevant for now, since the squad they had in the first place should never have been anywhere near relegation. Be interesting to see what Eddie can do with the backing of blood money in the future though.

He shouldn't be anywhere near manager of the season.
If Dyche can't get it when we finished 7th, keeping Newcastle up after spending a shed load of money shouldn't qualify Howe, especially as that's the minimum requirement.

It will, as per usual, go to a trophy winning manager.

£90-100 million plus Target is a loan deal and the sale going through in the summer.

Out of that though Bruno was 40m and he hasn’t started yet. Wood was 25m (overpriced anyway) but hasn’t scored/assisted a goal yet. Aside from that Burn and Trippier have done well as has Targett on loan.

The biggest change has been noticing that Joelinton is never a striker and moving him into midfield.
He's got a great engine and has been key in his new position.

I’m not sure about manager of the season, but I generally agree with RVclaret. I think Eddie Howe is doing an excellent job at Newcastle, taking on the job in very difficult circumstances. As the OP has said, the big money signings (Trippier being the honourable exception before his injury) haven’t done that much to contribute. Looks more like a team being organised, motivated, and playing to their strengths.
All those posters who laughed when EH was appointed, forecasting Newcastle’s certain relegation because of his inability to defend, must be feeling disappointed.
Good luck to him. I hope that SD can do something similar with our team sometime soon.

Spent time going around training grounds during his time out of the game, spent time with Simeone at Athletico Madrid. Huge progression from his Bournemouth days tactically.

Yeah winning manager of the season probably a stretch but if they keep up this form I could seriously see him shortlisted for it in a ‘top 5’. As you say, he’s tweaked their system and got them organised (despite many on here suggesting he’d never ever be able to organise a defence). The fact key players (Wilson, ASM and Tripp) have all been injured makes it that bit more impressive.

He’s a half decent manager give the man money he’s even better the people who were earlier dismissing his credentials & subsequently Newcastle as relegation fodder were on serious meds.

A club that could stay up, managerless. They literally could just have a few people from the local off-license tell to turn up for training and then told them to turn up on match day and see how it went.

If you think that you either lack any kind of football knowledge, are choosing to be ignorant or just completely bitter that Howe has done a great job.

Have you looked at Newcastle's starting XI? Does it strike you as a team of Galácticos that just need to be told to go out and steamroll the opposition?

They've made a couple of astute signings but it's pretty much the same team Bruce had. Unbeaten in 2022 with 5 wins suggests Howe is doing a decent job so far.

Newcastle up to 11th after that win tonight. Remarkable job Howe has done. No other team has ever stayed up after being without a win in the first 14 games. Seems to have learned a lot defensively, fair play to him.

It really can’t be underestimated how crap a job Bruce was doing though. I think Howe’s a decent manager but Newcastle should never have been in contention for relegation with their squad, even before the January window.

Howe knows how to release an attacking side, his problem has always been the defence.

His most astute signings have been in defence (Trippier, Burn, Targett) and they've looked generally solid.

Obviously it helps having the finance to buy players of the quality of Bruno Guimares, Trippier and, yes, Chris Wood, but he's done an excellent job. He's a very good manager. Didn't quote work out here, but anybody who doesn't think some of his signings were the initial foundations for our success under Dyche are kidding themselves.

He's done a truly amazing job up there.

Those owners of theirs must be delighted they appointed him when many said he couldn't keep them up because he can't organise a defence. Talk about proving people wrong.

Done a fantastic job for Newcastle with a minimum of fuss, with all the money that's floating around Newcastle will the owners ditch plain old Eddie Howe for a manager with a more exotic sounding name,I think they will, I don't think Eddie is good enough to be a Premier League winner...time will tell I suppose..
But for now well done Eddie.

Think there are plenty of managers who could have done an equally as good job there with that squad and that budget.

For me the managers of Brentford, Southampton or Palace are more worthy. All have been shrewd buyers of players, and all had some great results against top clubs this season

Viera has blown me away, I fully expected Palace to be deep in the relegation dogfight as did a Palace mate.
Brentford's entire setup is brilliant. It's taken years to build but it works like a dream.
The other impressive thing is Palace at least still have a real sense of connection to and identity with the community. They're both very admirable clubs.

I'm not sure how strong the link is between the manager and the signings they make at some of those clubs. At Brentford for instance the manager is only a small part of the player signing process.

Eddie has done a great job with Newcastle, and they could yet finish top half, which considering the mess they were in when he took over is no mean achievement, however his real test will come next season when expectations will be much higher, and Newcastle will be spending fortunes in the market this summer no doubt, which although might be welcome for him, will also bring it's own pressures if results start going awry, and we all know the Geordie faithful can be an unforgiving bunch.

he's done annoyingly well to date. Bigger test will be next season, but stock certainly seems to be on the rise.

He's certainly an improvement on Steve Bruce

Not hard, think Steve wants to spend less time on his novels and more on managing.
