New Cricket Season (Lancashire League/Ribblesdale League)
New Cricket Season (Lancashire League/Ribblesdale League)
With the new cricket season starting in just over 4 weeks and friendlies starting at the start of April how are preparations going at cricket clubs in the local area.
With new signings on board and professionals and overseas amateurs sorted who are the likely contenders in both the Lancashire League and Ribblesdale League.
Forecast is looking good for the next week which will help all the groundsmen get the grounds ready and long may it continue into the season.

Looking forward to it.
Padiham are playing a Friendly at Colwyn bay (Lancashire sometimes play there) over the Easter weekend. 85 people are booked in overnight in hotels and campsites.
Not often we get to go to seaside resorts watching the cricket. Lets hope for good weather.

I'll be at the House for most games and probably at several of the away ones too but I'm less confident than usual. A very average pro (going off last season) and the loss of Jonny Whitehead without a replacement is a big blow to the batting depth. Can't see more than midtable this season...but you never know.

I'll keep this post warm until the end of the season - this year will be a great year to bring youth through and give them experience. I am for one, quite excited.Somethingfishy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 17, 2022 3:29 pmI'll be at the House for most games and probably at several of the away ones too but I'm less confident than usual. Well I certainly hope that some of the youngsters step up to the plate. There are a few that certainly perform excellently at their level and fingers crossed they make the step up. I just don't think it is wrong to say it's going to be a bit of a transitional season in store for us. I don't think I am being unrealistic there. Of course that means we have no idea how it will go I suppose.

I’ve heard Joey Hawke will be missing quite a lot of games for Lowerhouse along with big Frankie?
Definitely big boots to fill by the youngsters if that’s the case in division 1 especially…

i watched quite a few games last year up at Burnley. The standard over the years as defiantly dropped. The pros are not as good as they used to be. some players that old and fat they cant even run. some decent youngster however who were very keen but just not good enough.

Re: New Cricket Season (Lancashire League/Ribblesdale League)
Hearing a bit of discontent with the house members.
A lot of yearning for the pro that won them the cup rather than the one they have.
I’ve also heard a rumour that the first eleven players won’t push the side screens when the the bowler goes from round to over the wicket at home games and get the members to do it. “Too posh to push” is how he described it.
Surely not.
A couple of very decent new pro’s this year from what I’ve heard. Walsden may go close but it’ll be Burnley’s to lose again.

Re: New Cricket Season (Lancashire League/Ribblesdale League)
I’d say the league is the strongest I’ve seen it in my 20 years of regularly watching, maybe not on the pro’s side of things but certainly top amateurs. There’s a good 6-8 decent sides now rather than 1-2, all capable of beating each other.pushpinpussy wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 7:29 ami watched quite a few games last year up at Burnley. I’d agree Burnley will be in that top 2, probably with Walsden although I’m sure I’d heard their pro had finally moved on?
I go to at least 1 game a weekend with the family, we love the day out, hopefully a few red hot weekends, get down at 10am to put the chairs out and get my spot in Stella corner.

Burnley have a couple of decent players back but I've been told Chris Holt can't play much this year, due to work. That will be a big blow.
I think Clitheroe might win it this year. Decent addition with the ex pro who has caused the controversy and all their youngsters will be a year older with more experience. If they come on for it and backed up by a decent pro should go close.

We have two sight screens at each end so I can’t recall the last time they had to move!

Any cricket fan at Clitheroe that day would want him in their team. It was seriously impressive clouting of a cricket ball. He was the kind of player I was hoping we would get when we let Ocki go. The South African we had lined up before covid wiped it all out was i believe a big hitter.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 7:47 amHearing a bit of discontent with the house members.

Re: New Cricket Season (Lancashire League/Ribblesdale League)
Lowerhouse are a club in transition. There will be changes both on and off the pitch which is inevitable in a very competitive league.
I'll take a mid table position with a Worsley Cup win again.
Our sub pro in the cup final last season had a 'dream' innings which turned the tie in our favour.
Over a season there would be no guarantee that he would be any better than our current pro.
The problems that come are when certain experienced players are not available for a number of games. Do the younger players then get dropped ?
I believe that we have one great cricket league on our doorsteps and I can't wait for it to start.
Up the House.

Ron Singleton Trophy down at Burnley this Saturday against Lowerhouse, hopefully the weather stays fair as it’s still a touch cold for cricket.
Looking forward to Local Cricketers prediction, I’ve a feeling he may be a little quiet on the board for some time, bumped into Shapcott this morning and had a good chat.

Re: New Cricket Season (Lancashire League/Ribblesdale League)
I can see Earby's cricket ground (Applegarth) from our daughter's bedroom, so am looking forward to going on there for a few games this season. Struggled last season as my daughter broke her leg in mid April! When the sun is out, it is a lovely place to watch a game of cricket.
Re: New Cricket Season (Lancashire League/Ribblesdale League)
Played for Earby for 14 years leelad, top club.
Got big crowds in the 90's, played with some club legends like Herbie, Colin Madden the Wisemans and Chappie and his Dad.

Herbie is still playing for the 2nd team this season whilst also playing for Lancashire Over 60’s as well.
You can still find Mick Chapple on the ground every day as well as he helps look after the ground.

Great day/weekend at Colwyn Bay watching Padiham. Fantastic ground and wicket for so early in the season.
They posted 241 and Padiham reached around 190. A high standard of cricket with one of their lads hitting a 100 and our pro Jack Edgar hitting a classy 86. A vocal 60/70 thicknecks made the trip.
