I once asked him how he broke his nose. He replied in a broad Scottish accent, “Which time? It’s been broke 5 times”

IT looks as though I am one of the few clarets privileged to have seen Andy in his heyday and again when hosting on the Turf. On the pitch I thought he often looked a bit lethargic but then would explode with a terrific goal. Wonderful memories of a fantastic player and a great man.
RIP Andy, and condolences to friends and family.

Very very sad news, a great forward for Burnley, hard as nails and formed a great parnership with Willie Irvine.I grew up as a teenager in the same area as Andy's wife Carole, I remember when Andy met her.
After he finished playing he stayed in the area and ran the Bay Horse in Worsthorne for several years.
From memory I think he then became steward at Ighten Mount Bowling club.
RIP Andy, a true club legend.

Saw Andy scoring some memorable goals in my early days following the Clarets
I hitched to watch Burnley v Spurs at WHL and got on at half time. Just in time as Burnley won a corner and Andy rose above the defenders and buried it.We won 1-0.
Years later Andy showed us round the Turf and described how Bob Lord called him in to the office
Andy had played well the previous day and assumed he was getting a very rare thanks off Bob.
Not a bit of it he was told to get down to the station as Andy had been sold to Villa.
That's how it went in those days with chairmen
having total power.
RIP Andy

A player just before my time but got to know him when I lived in Worsthorne. Always a gent and great host and always happy to spend time chatting about footy and The Clarets. Another legend sadly gone to The Turf in The Sky……..

As many have said the best header of a ball I have ever seen. One of my favourite players and I was lucky enough to meet him many times when he came to our church youth club to take gym classes.

Scorer of so many great goals for us. A true legend and always a Claret in heart and soul. Just seemed like yesterday I used to be watching him play. Ano nonsense centreforward.

What a player, and what a partnership with Willie Irvine. Got to be our best ever. Not 100% sure but didn't they both hit 30 goals one season? I think Irvine got one more than Andy.

Spoke to Andy several times at matches. He got relegated to an ordinary seat in the Bob Lord (Jimmy Mac end.) when he stopped doing tours of the stadium etc.. He wasn't best pleased about that.

R.I.P. Andy. One of the true greats.

Oh dear..that's really sad .Fantastic goalscorer and one of the best headers of a ball I've ever seen .He was a great ambassador for the Club and I was privileged to have met him when I sponsored a few games when I was working .I remember a game against Reading in 2004/2005...January i think .I sat next to him for the match in the Bob Lord stand..it was a drab 0-0 draw and Andy dropped it on me just before the end to pick the Man of the Match .I chose Frank Sinclair and his mouth dropped open before he berated me .Have you been watching with your ******** eyes shut ? God bless ..great memories.

Pointer and Robson. Irvine and Lochhead. What would we give for strikers like that today. They contributed heavily to some of my greatest times and memories.
What a man Andy was. Pick any superlative you like and it will fit Andy Lochhead. To say he was Burnley thru and thru is a massive understatement. Thanks Andy for all the great goals and times you thrilled us all. Lodging on Olympia St as a young man ! No Cheshire for Andy.
Finally it still amazes me that Panzanatto didn’t break his foot on Andy’s head !!! RIP Sir Andy

Astounded that the official websites main story is about the woman’s team when the club have just lost an all time great. Once showed us round the Turf on hospitality a few years back and he had lost none of his appetite for the game, or for Burnley as a club. A true great in ever sense of the word, on and off the field.

Rest Easy Andy.

Never saw him play as a little bit before my time but had the pleasure of meeting Andy and chatting to him and getting his autograph whilst on a hospitality match at The Turf a while back.

What a player! Hard as nails and many a centre half would know they were in for real battle. I don’t really remember anyone who could head a ball with such power. Today’s defenders, who fall to the ground screaming at the slightest touch would be pleading to be substituted.
Thanks for the memories, Andy…rest in peace

So sad to hear this news.
I was fortunate enough to have seen him play many times and score many goals including the five he scored in that FA cup replay against Bournemouth in the pouring rain at Turf Moor. I was also lucky enough to have met him on a couple of occasions when he was involved in the match day experience at Turf Moor.
RIP big Andy. The best header of a football I've ever seen.

This sort of news seems to be occurring with increased regularity now. I think every post has picked out who and what Andy Lochhead was to Burnley. To follow a partnership of Pointer and Robson was presumably going to be a hard act to follow but Andy took up the challenge and came out with honours. Always have memories of reading a newspaper after a game and the goalscorers regularly read Lochhead, Irvine.
I mentioned a couple of weeks ago meeting former City goalkeeper Joe Corrigan at an airport and when he found out I was a Claret he asked if I saw Andy Lochhead play. When I said 'yes' he just blew out his cheeks. CT mentioned Brian Labone in his tribute and I was telling my son and daughter yesterday about Labone talking about Andy. It went something like ' a cross would come in and it had to be cleared but I always heard the footsteps quickening up and getting closer and then it hit you, legs, arms, body smashed into me'. Labone was a top centre half but he freely admitted that Andy was the most physical, toughest centre forward he ever played against. RIP Andy. A true Clarets legend.

I once went on a reserve game when Andy was a young lad. We were playing Newcastle and they had Bob Stokoe at centre half who tormented Andy all afternoon until Andy finally reacted and got himself sent off. George Bray was the trainer and he gave him a rollocking and said he needed to learn that if he was going to retaliate he should leave it a few minutes then it would only be considered a foul. Andy learned, as Mike England found out a few years later when the role was reversed.

One of the last times I saw Andy was when I took the photo in the article. By then he was suffering a bit with his health and looked anything but the 'hard of nails' description that we've seen rightly written so hard on this thread. He was just so different off the field, a lovely man who always had, abd wanted, time to talk to fans.

I'm so pleased this thread has had such a response, big Andy deserves it.

Another instinctive goal scorer. Would make as much space for himself as possible so that he could take a running jump rather than a standing jump. Also meant that defenders felt the full force of a flying Andy Lochhead. Goalkeepers also knew when Andy was around.

Lovely to read so many tributes to Andy.
One story I'd like to share with you came from a match at Old Trafford. Can't remember the date but Andy scored two great 1st half headers at the Stretford End. I was in the opposite end but a Utd fan near me said to one of his mates, "That guy heads a ball as hard as Charlton kicks it!" Enough said, comparing him to the great Bobby Charlton who could leather a football with either foot.

Think the above game was at Old Trafford in Sep. 1965. As you say, 2-0 up but the referee kept the game going until nearly 4 55 until they equalised. Not the last time that was going to happen in the next few seasons. Andy had some great tussles with United centre half, Bill Foulkes too but apparently off the field good friends especially on a golf course where I believe Foulkes was a scratch golfer. Just a brilliant era to watch skilled and honest pro's.

Apologies for being off thread on a tribute page but what a fantastic era the 60s was for headers of a caser. Andy, Wynn Davies and Ron Davies being my favourites of the attackers and to see them up against the likes of Brian Labone, Ron Yeats, Mike England, Bill Foulkes was a joy.

Aye, no false No9's then. If that number was on your back goals were expected from you and if No5 was on your back you were expected to stop them doing it.

Got some comments from old schoolmates of mine from my grammar school days in Salford. All Man Utd fans but all of them very aware of Andy's threat especially in the penalty box from crosses.. Definitely a player that made his presence known.

Think it was very poor not giving Andy a minutes silence.
This applause thing is so wrong and disrespectful particularly during the match.
