The best header of a football I’ve ever seen for any club since watching football.
Very very sad news.

Really sad to read this news. Cracking player and always interesting to chat to when he would recount tales of football in a very different era.
MY condolences to all his family and friends at this very sad time.

Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
He was obviously a tough nut..as many Scotts are. My dad and grandad will of seen him play and I wish I had, it's striking how many loved our club and stayed in the area, I'm sure how much we loved them played a part..RIP ANDY
Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
I'm fairly sure it was one of your reports, CT, probably on the old site, when you said that anyone who had stamped on Andy Lochhead's head ought to be pleading with the ref to be sent off. Because if he hadn't been sent off, it would be dangerous to be still on the pitch with Lochhead out for revenge.
He was my first "football hero" when I was about 2. At least, I liked saying the name. So my mother likes to remind me.

Sad news indeed. He and Willie Irvine were my boyhood heroes. Hard as nails! RIP Andy.
Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
Yes absolutely awful news. I’m thankful I had the pleasure of watching him play, man mountain. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
There was a thread about him last week and someone asked if he was still going on. I just said no, because he wasn't at all well. I suspected then he might not have too long left.
He was as hard as nails on the pitch but a delight to chat to off the pitch. I mentioned it in the piece but he and Willie Irvine were a great double act on the pitch and then again years later as match day hosts. They were always really good friends.

Sad news. First saw him on losing Leicester City team 1969 Cup Final V Man City on TV. Too young to remember him playing for Burnley but can gather the affection and respect he was held in by Clarets Fans from those who watched him on Turf.

RIP Andy. Thanks for the memories.Condolences to family and friends.
I was blessed to see so many of his 3, 4 and 5 goal hauls. Should have had so many caps but was overlooked for better footballers that would never score the quantity Andy did.

That's really sad news. Andy gave me a special memory, scoring the winning goal in my first ever Burnley match - the 1-0 victory against Spurs at WHL April 1966.

Very sad news.
He's a generation before me so never saw him play but had the pleasure to meet him a few times when he was working for the club in the hospitaliity area.
Even as somebody who was fairly elderly then, he had an imposing stature. He was great company and you felt he was a man of impeccable character.
RIP Andy. A true Claret.

A fantastic player who with Willie Irvine fed on crosses from Willie Morgan and Ralph Coates in that wonderful 1965-66 season. My abiding memory is of him rising to meet one of those crosses and his balding head shining in the floodlights. Sad news.

I remember the Liverpool game in 1968. I didn't realise it was Andy's last game for the Clarets. Maybe that's got something to do with winning the next 8 games and the players that achieved that.

A small typo in the second sentence - 1958, of course, not 1968.
Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
Met him in the ighten mount one evening, after scratching my head where I'd seen his face before.
We chatted for a moment and I said "you're a legend," he just smirked and replied "I just headed a ball for Burnley"
A real Gentleman, who was happy to talk football with what was a complete stranger.
RIP Mr Lochhead, you'll always be a claret.

Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
The oldest looking footballer in history ? Burnley have had such contrasting strikers but I fancy SD would have loved him if he could have found someone to get the crosses in. Devastating on his day and in many ways not a archetypal Burnley player but always a crowd favourite as he had both skill and passion.

Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
What a great shame. He was breaking on the scene when I first started supporting the club.He must have been dreadful to play against-and a prolific header of a ball, maybe the best we have had in my generation. Remember getting seats to a VIP pre match meal when we played Cardiff in the Championship. He came up to me and started talking to me, ensuring I was being looked after. For such an aggressive player there was a real gentleness to his manner. RIP

Watched him in the 60s from the old Brunshaw Rd stand seats with my dad when I was rather too young to concentrate and all I really went for was the hot Bovril and kit kat at half time. But like others in that team he's etched into my childhood memories. A (another) very, very sad day.

Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
I was brought up on the forward line of Connelly, McIlroy, Pointer, Robson and Pilkington, which I thought could never be equalled. However, only a few years later I was watching Morgan, Irvine, Lochhead, Harris and Coates, all internationals, all top quality players. I was a very fortunate person to witness these teams and Andy was outstanding and without doubt the best header of a ball I’ve seen in a claret shirt. I spoke to him several times when he was an ambassador for the club and found him to be a lovely, interesting guy as well. You will always be a true legend Andy, RIP.
Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
Sad to hear of Andy's passing tonight. He was centre forward when I started going on the Turf.
Had some good Friday nights at Ighten Mount when he was steward there in the late 80s. There was no messing about with Andy in charge. A quiet man and also a great story teller from his career with a dry sense of humour ant wit who could keep his face straight when telling a story only to erupt into laughter with the punchline.
God bless you Andy, and thank you for the good times.
Rest in peace big fella.

When Bobby Moore died a friend of mine, who new Andy quite well, asked if he could remember playing against him. Andy’s typical response was, “I remember knocking him about a bit”.

Re: ARTICLE: Farewell to Andy Lochhead
One memory I have is the BBC showing the goals from an away match at Chelsea. Andy scored twice with fantastic headers from the edge of the penalty area against a decent keeper in Peter Bonetti. Looking at the stats on here I think it must have been our 3-1 win in 1967/68 season.
Anyone else remember this? Can’t find it on YouTube.

He will still be arguing with your Dad about the price of said 'wee low flyer' and who's turn it is to pay! Nothing but great memories of Andy and Willie in my bar after a game. The Barnes 5 v Stockport sticks in the memory as Andy reminded us of who else in the room had scored 5 for Burnley.Claret Till I Die wrote: ↑Fri Mar 18, 2022 6:37 pmI'll be raising a 'wee low flyer' for you tonight Andy
