County Championship - are we ready?

Post by jdrobbo » Mon Apr 04, 2022 11:16 am

Hi all,

I’ve received three texts in the last 24 hours….from Bedfords, Bodge and MDWat. Won’t go into the specifics but fair to say they’re running scared. In fact, two of the aforementioned wrong roses, are expecting a top two finish for Lancs this season.

Of course, we humble and polite red roses, will take each game as it comes.

It will though, be interesting to see how we go with additional game time for Anderson and possibly Buttler. As always, we’ll need to bat better and not rely so heavily on the bowling unit, which in fairness, looks a real threat.

Apparently they’ve invested in a pie-chucking machine down at the Carnegie training centre.

First up for Lancs, Kent, starting Thursday 14th.

Best wishes to you and your county sides. Cheers for the texts, guys!

I doubted this was real….. then I saw that they contacted via text, like people stuff in the 90’s, and realised it was probably true.

Meanwhile on Whatsapp there’s group chats on the ridiculous likelihood of starting the county championship in snow.

No treason why Lancs can't challenge strongly again this season, the bowling attack is looking good, and as long as the batting picks up every chance of winning plenty of games, of course the typical rainy Manchester weather might put a spanner in the works.

Got my ticket for the first day at Canterbury (only a 7 mile journey) - just need to decide if I wear a Lancs shirt or a Burnley one. There was a two day match at Canterbury last week but not much okay on second day. Lancs seem to have a pretty reasonable squad and if Jimmy plays we will always have a chance. Interesting to see how Phil Salt goes for us this year too.

Looking forward to the season, as stated above the bowling attack looks solid, just need the batting to pick up from last year

Don't take that snide dig JDR, from a lad brought up and still living in the Lancashire boundaries.

Jimmy will play his first game the week after against Gloucestershire at EOT. Don’t forget AGM is 21st April which clashes with Southampton at home.

She's well thanks JDR, living with me she always has a sunny disposition :x

Off to Spain for a few days R&R tomorrow, flying from Leeds/Bradford so i'll keep my eye open for you on your run.

I'll bring you back a wooden spoon in readiness for the new season, granted it will be 5 months early though.

Didn't realise the CC started today, as you'd expect in early April plenty of rain delays, 3 centuries on the opening day, Brown & Cook for Essex, and Eskinazi for Middlesex, who are both going well with the bat, as are Sussex, elsewhere wickets are tumbling though.

Regarding the England players, Lawrence failed, Burns got a start, but was then dismissed for 41, and Ollie Pope is well set on 40 heading into day 2.

I think Athers lad played against Lancs recently for Leeds Bradford Uni, alongside a lad with a future from Leyland, Kurtis Watson.

Some good scores for England players so far, Foakes the standout with 132. Pope chipped in with a 50. Bracey having a great knock. Shame to see Sibley get a first baller.

First result of the season, and a convincing Hampshire victory over Somerset at Southampton.

No real surprise considering the fortunes of both last season, and Hampshire looking strong once more to mount a title challenge.

Lancashire and Yorkshire get their campaigns underway tomorrow, Lancs at Canterbury playing Kent, Yorkshire at Bristol playing Gloucestershire.

C'mon the Red Rose let's start as we mean to go on, and get an early win on the board.

Saqib Mahmood and James Anderson both banned ( made unavailable ) by the ECB for Lancashire's opening fixture ....

Certainly don't want Jimmy being exhausted having to bowl again after only 13 weeks of rest since his last game, or Saqib, just 3 weeks after finishing two games in a month bowling 61 overs over two Test matches ... poor chap must be shattered !

Wells
Balderson
Bohannon
Croft
Vilas (cpt)
Salt (wkt)
Wood
Lamb
Bailey
Hassan
Parkinson

Very strong lineup even without Mahmood and Anderson.

Steady start, 19/0 in 7th over.

I think it's 7 games in a short space, so Jimmy will play every other?
Lancs might have wanted him to play home games to attract crowds?

Balderstone gone - dropped in slips then next ball caught behind. Wells looking good but probably jinxed him now. Looks a good toss to have won.

They both gave 50s now and are approaching a hundred partnership. Got to admire Darren Stevens though - approaching 46 years old and still playing top level cricket. Been a great signing for Kent when Leicestershire thought he was past it.

Good partnership this for Lancs, now can one or both go on and net a big score, 188-3, stand now worth over 100.

Agree with the comment above Darren Stevens is an incredible athlete to still be playing CC cricket at 46, and he doesn't seem to be showing any signs of quitting for a while yet.

Villas is trying to be positive but at the moment he is a bit like a loose cannon - bowlers not troubling the batsmen but he could give his wicket away if he is not careful. Home crowd very quiet at the moment and 207 for 3 looks a lot better than 80 for 3.

Terrific session by Croft & Vilas, 229-3 at tea, Croft 69, Vilas 88, partnership worth 149, and hopefully plenty more to come after tea.
