Mansfield Town ...

Post by Clarets4me » Tue Apr 12, 2022 6:55 pm

Now managed by Nigel Clough, who did a great job at Burton Albion over two spells, they've had a storming last few months. After 14 games on the 23rd October, they'd won just twice and were flirting with relegation to the Conference with just 11 points ..

The last 26 games has seen a record of Won 18, Drawn 4, Lost 4, amassing 58 points to now lie in 4th place, 3 points behind Port Vale who occupy the 3rd automatic promotion slot, with a game in hand. Four of their last 6 games are at home ..

Clough as you may recall, resigned as Burton manager in the early stages of the Covid pandemic, in order to help the Club's financial position.

Done a great job there, and in his first spell at Burton. Ince is also making a decent fist at Reading, despite last weekends defeat while Sparky is doing less well at Brad(t)ford. Both the first two seem to have proved they can more than hold their own (at least for a time) at their current levels.

Update ... just qualified for the 2nd Division " Play-Off " final at Wembley, with a 3-1 aggregate win over Northampton Town ...

In mid-October, they lost 2-0 at Sixfields, at which point they were only out of the relegation places on goal difference, with 10 points from 12 games. Since then, they garnered 67 points from the next 34 games ...

They'll meet either Swindon or Port Vale on 28th May ..

Remarkably similar upturn to their near neighbours Forest who were also moored at the foot of the league before appointing Cooper.

However given Nigel Clough's record at these levels we shouldn't really be surprised at the impact he's had.

Forest's upturn coincided with the appointment of a new manager though

Feel sorry for Northampton after missing out on automatic promotion by 1 goal on the final day

Yes when Cooper took the reins they seemed to be revitalised, funny how some management changes can work wonders, when others don't have the desired effect.
