Priorities for the new manager

Post by tiger76 » Sat Apr 16, 2022 3:31 pm

Now the dust is finally settling on Sean's departure time to look to the future, and what do posters think should be the main priorities for the incoming gaffer, mine are as follows.

Short term simple try and maintain our PL status.

However excepting that this is unlikely then longer term for me the onus is on clearing the decks of the older hands, and giving youth a chance, as well as taking a more attacking approach to matches.

Naturally we should be targeting an instant return to the PL, but equally we need to both trim the wage bill, and also start developing a younger squad, the current squad have served us well for many years, but the time has come for a major rebuild, and tough calls will have to be made.

Ideally if we can promote 2/3 of the under 23's this could reenergise our play, and also save us a pretty penny in transfer fees and wages.

This depends if it’s a short or long term appointment. If it’s the former, I’m with FCBurnley, just one priority.

It's basically the same remit Howe had when he came in, because he had to deal with a very rebellious squad when he took over.

Revamp the squad, lower the age limit, get rid of anyone who causes aggravation.

After that it's either keep the club in the league or mastermind promotion next season.

Surely it depends if it's the players who wanted him out.

Managing expectation.

The new manager needs to take pressure of himself and players.

Time is needed for a re boot

That's the issue, we aren't really sure here

We all know the players downed tools after Coyle left and Howe had a clear out, but that then led to claims by fans that he couldn't deal with players a similar age to himself.

Fair point. If it is the players who had a say in him going, I'd expect a reaction and a better performance tomorrow.

1) Persuade Ben Mee to stay. Contract for life, coaching role offered possibly also if he would like that, if too much for him as well as playing no worries, but we need to let him know he is our future. He is someone our club should pin their values too.

2) Offload as many of the other OOC players as possible bar possibly Vydra, mainly because he is different to Jay and Barnes and could tuck in behind if another formation was used. Much more mobile and flexible

3) Promote 3 younger players to the 1st team squad, they are there, we have Bardsley taking up a space without playing, whats the difference? Plus it shows the younger lads there is a root to the 1st team squad, possibly helping them add a lil more to their game, more effort, more drive

4) Keep Cornet, Wout, Collins, Pope, Taylor, Mee. These are the six we should build our team around. Change of formation to 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 possibly to allow Roberts and Taylor to be wing backs. Cornet and Mcneil playing off Wout. Maybe another formation, but lets become more flexible, ball to feet, attacking midfielders playing off Wout

5) Bring in 2 central midfielders, one defensive one attacking, coupled with Brownhill and A.N.Other, either Westwood or even Helm. Corks legs have gone although he should be in now, just if they are OOC they should be gone. This is where the money needs to be spent!

6) Utilise the free transfer market for squad players, should already be in talks with players like Jed Wallace, Matt Grimes and Tom Lawrence, better (or will offer more going forward) than the likes of Lennon (age more than anything), JBG, Cork (age again), Stephens plus they are both at least 5 years younger than most, they are the equivalents to our Arfields and Boyds of the past. If we do stay up we are going to need numbers because of the 5 sub rule, lets use it to our advantage, instead of what under Dyche would have been no different, sub on 75 mins, sub on 85 mins

7) Restore discipline in the squad, players cant wear hats, earphones in interviews but can get drunk on coach rides home from games and then get in their cars. New values need to be instilled within the squad and followed. The Roberts debacle all season with his twitter account and constant digs at management show how Dyche had started losing the respect of players, As much I think his attitude towards players he had not fully sanctioned so was either himself or through his pitbulls Woan and Stone (Mitchell Brothers) that would ride players differently (this is my guess, nothing concrete)

8) Try not to lose our identity, we are Burnley, Super Burnley, we are Burnley from the North. We are a small club with a massive heart. We have done the unthinkable this last 10 years, we have grown like we never imagined and seen clubs like Wigan and Bolton go the other way.

The only priority is keeping us in this division. Thats why theyre coning in now. I don't believe this will be a long-term appointment.

I'd hope we're setting our sights higher than that, with some nifty wheeling and dealing we should still have the nucleus of a squad capable of pushing for at least a play-off place should the worst happen.

As I can't edit just to add one more.

Let's start taking the cups seriously, and try and have a decent run for once, that alone would at least provide some excitement, just recall how the town was buzzing during the Coyle season.

Absolutely, they'll be a time and a place to thsnk Mr Dyche, however for now we need everyone pulling in the same direction, backing the clubs decision, and giving the new man our full backing and support.

Priority #1: 14 points from the remaining 8 games.

Priority #2: Let's think about this after we know how we've got on with achieving Priority #1.

part of me thinks they would go for someone like a Rooney because of the publicity but maybe they will go for someone like Bilic who has a far deeper knowledge of the foreign market as that would tie in better with the buy cheap sell for profit model

Of course I do, I want 8 wins from 8 and us to stay in the league, are you saying you don't?

I didn't say it was realistic, I'm hoping for a miracle new manager bounce.

I have just accepted I will be watching championship football next next season. Whilst I was very confident SD would get us straight back up. Now I think we will follow bastards down to league 1.

Football doesn't work like that, if football worked solely on previous achievements, we wouldn't have been in the relegation zone all season long.

1. Retain PL status this season.

2. Ditch hoofball.

3. Ditch 4-4-2

4 Sort out the squad ooc players

5. Get Ben Mee to stay

6. Get Pope, Cornet, WW, Taylor, Vydra, Roberts, Collins, McNeil to stay,

7. Rebuild the squad including maximising its size

8. Change the midfield

9 Get some proper wingers

10 Get rid of the dead wood and bring in younger players, pace and creativity

Amazed that a new stadium and £30m signings aren’t mentioned yet by the Garlick/ Dyche out fantasy fans yet.

If football worked on previous achievements, the same team would win the PL every single season and the same manager.

First objective achieved, let's get behind them, nobody's fault dyche has been sacked in my opinion apart from he's own, let's get behind whoever is left on Thursday and get the win, this is still doable, but we will need a 12th man, so let's do it, inquest when it's done. Utc's

Aye, his stubbornness to not play Cork has cost him and us hugely, I thought Cork was done prior to his resurgence then he was dropped and never seen again. I don't think Brownhill's good enough at all, gives the ball away far too much, gets caught high up the pitch and doesn't offer anything high up the pitch.

I saw some good signs today, far better football, played it on the deck nicely in the first half, that sublime Wout flick to Jay then Jay hesitated instead of slotting Wout 1v1. The Cornet low cross, Wout was wide open for a tap in, poor cross from Cornet. We actually looked a threat and looked to play on the front foot against a very good side.

If we can get a new man in before midweek game, win that with an Everton loss and suddenly we're out of the bottom 3. With the way the fixtures are, I don't think we're done just yet with a new manager, we were absolutely done with Dyche though imo.

Just simply coach players and improve them.

We will see where that takes us.
