Rangnick - Burnley basics

Post by Zom Zom » Sat Apr 23, 2022 12:02 pm

The departing interim manager has claimed that United need to get back to basics by using Burnley as his marker:

"In training we haven't been on the level I'd like," said Rangnick. "We are very far away from football I would like to play.

"Even if I watch Burnley and they are fighting to stay in league, the way they defended and didn't allow Southampton a single chance...

"This is what I mean by basics, and those are things we need to show in the next games." [from the BBC]

Not quite limiting them to a single chance admittedly, but that certainly highlights one of their many issues.

I saw that last night on Sky Sports, it was an excellent tribute from Rangnick to our defensive set-up as a team.

In fairness we completely stopped Southampton from open play. They only posed a threat from set pieces. It was also very impressive how we completely killed the game from about the 80th minute.

One thing SD understood (whatever you think of the rest of our play) is that a good Defender has to think like a defender, instinctively. It’s a different mindset to a midfielder/attacker. Which is why a good wing-back needs a disciplined wideman in front of him to cover… and why wingbacks are every ten years or so become all the rage, then go out of fashion again as teams are found out and other clubs adjust.

I’m not sure that’s true.

Then again we probably have better defenders than them. They have paid hundreds of millions for some average players. Wasted money. Thing is they have the money. We don't so we are more selective.

I thought they created next to nothing from open play, but may be forgetting some chances.

They had one main chance from open play which was a cross from their left, over Tarkowski’s head and Adams hit it on the volley straight at Pope who tipped it over.

Yeah, that and the Taylor block were the two I can remember - and we were two up at the time. Thought we contained them really well, particularly in seeing the last 10-15 minutes out.
