Injury Update

Post by RVclaret » Thu May 05, 2022 1:51 pm

From MJ’s presser.

Pieters is in contention following a return to training, but Rodriguez is expected to miss out after he tweaked his hamstring while warming last weekend. Cornet has stepped up his recovery and started running outside. Westwood has successfully undergone surgery.

Did he say that?

The reporter asked "Erik should be available and Max & Jay have a chance?" MJ responded with yes that's where we are at, we'll see how things respond overnight and discuss things in a meeting tomorrow morning and make a final decision then.

Any news on JBG? Or is it the usual - currently residing in the Defour Suite on the Brady ward keeping our medical team gainfully employed?

Said Pieters has trained all week. Maxwel Cornet has trained with the group today. Jay hasn’t trained due to hamstring injury.

Tore his calf didn’t he? Will be pre season I’d imagine.

MJ's initial response was Jay-Rod still a little bit of his hamstring, so we are having a little look on him, Ben back on the grass, doing a bit more running, Erik back on the grass looking really good, trained all week, Max been out on the grass today.

You may be right that Jay will be unavailable for Saturday but he didn't say that.

I lose track of exactly which injury is preventing him from making any contribution to our club other than keeping the physios busy.

Yeah guess me saying ‘expected to miss out’ just going off the fact he hasn’t been training.

Anyway - let’s hope Cornet can make the starting 11.

Vydra WW up top, Cornet left, Lennon bench.

I'd be happy with Vydra up front and Cornet on the wing.

Sounds to me like no Cornet if he’s only just back in training but Erik has been in all week. Deffo no JRod.

Think we must consider one of the U23’s for the bench if that’s the case. Can’t have the lack of forward cover we had vs Watford.

Have we ever been told what Ben Mee's injury actually is?

I think we'll start with the same team but add Pieters and Max to the bench. My concern with Cornet is he's so fragile that bringing him off the bench could be a massive risk.

Obviously Jay if needed but if not 100% then with Barnes already on the bench and the addition of Max he may think an extra week rest is best.

A fracture to a bone in his leg, can't remember which bone it was.

EDIT: Fibula

If he’s trained with the group then the injury must be settled. He trains tomorrow too and I’d imagine he’s fit enough to be at least in the squad. Seen as though it’s only 2 weeks since his last game it’s not like he’s out of match fitness, the rest might have even done him some good.

I agree, (after just two weeks out) he'll be fit enough to play some part, it's just if he's 100% over his knee issue. If Max is involved then there is no reason to risk Jay when a week will make all the difference with him, add this to the fact that Barnes is back then the bench would be Hennessey, Lowton, Bardsley, Pieters, Long, Stephens, Cornet, Barnes +1.

I would think too soon to play Max, but hopefully he can get a place on the bench.

Like I said above, he worries me when coming on as sub as there is always a risk of him breaking down. The lack of depth on the bench means him coming on after an hour and not seeing the game out could be a disaster.

Is he ready to play the first hour though?

If so, Lennon needs to be on the right. Might as well stick me on the left than him.

To be honest at this stage of the season and the fight we still have I’d prefer him to get half an hour and breakdown than not play. Saturday is our most winnable game of the season and if we get to the last half hour and aren’t winning he needs to come on if he’s on the bench. Saving him for later games might well be too late.

Agree with this. Definitely worth the risk. As long as he’s trained fine today and tomorrow.

I agree 100% but it doesn't stop me having concerns over his fragility.

I hope we start with the same team as last week and are 4-0 up at half time, ideally with a Weghorst hat-trick, Jay and Max getting another week to be fully fit for next weekend. ;)

There's no point picking Maxwell to start and him then limping off before half time never to be seen again this season (or even ever if we go down!) If he's in decent shape then have him on the bench and maybe use him in the last 20 minutes depending on the situation. After another week of getting back to full fitness he could then be a possible starter. (imo)

More on Westwood, still being involved with the team
Caretaker boss Mike Jackson says Ashley Westwood is playing his part in Burnley's fight for Premier League survival from behind the scenes.

Westwood has had surgery on his ankle after sustaining a season-ending injury against West Ham last month.

But Jackson said, despite not being able to help on the pitch, the midfielder is doing everything he can to help the coaching staff.

He said: "Obviously he's got his injury and he’s joined our club in the bat cave. He’s watching the analysis, watching games, so he’s another one swinging from the ceiling in there with us for three or four hours at a time.

"He’s got great experience as a player, good knowledge, he is a good midfield player and will have different insight into what midfielders see so that only helps us. He’ll be in with us watching games, discussing as a group what we see. We get his input from how a midfielder sees the game.

"For the lad himself just to keep him part of it when you’ve had an injury and a setback like that. Credit to him, that shows his character. He could sit at home now but he’s not, he’s thinking 'how can I help?'

"That goes with this group and says what they are about. He’s here to help. He’s on a set of sticks, but he’s doing everything he can to contribute.

"You can have too many opinions but what you want is someone’s eye on things. They see things from a different point of view that you might miss. It’s about you not being too proud of your own self and thinking it’s only you when you can use other information around you.

"Why should I not take information from a lad who has played hundreds of Premier League games?"

Jay’s getting more and more fragile , seems an almost constant season or so with minor niggles and strains . Cornet also seems fragile for his age and not exactly a physical player . CouId really do with these 2 vs Villa , but whatever team is out we know they want it . The crowds been brilliant too and I expect nothing less on Sat .
