On your marks ... get set ...

The only saving grace for him today is that we performed even worse than he did.

How long did Martinez waste in the first half?
How often did he do it?
Pathetic ref

I thought he was terrible but then I was on the game so I may have been influenced by the crowd so he may well have had a text book game.

I don’t want this to interfere with the marking, but let’s just be clear about the rules here. Martinez wasted an incredible amount of time in the first half but two minutes of injury time was the right outcome…

The issue here is that the referee allowed Martinez to keep the ball in his hands on five or six occasions, for a great deal of time. The ball in these instances, was in play, so the time should not have been added on. However, the referee should’ve booked the goalkeeper for doing it and stamped it out. Instead, he allowed it to continue over and over again, and therefore his control and authority score will likely be very low.

He was dreadful - blatant dive by Watkins in the penalty area as well that he bottled on issuing a yellow

Watkins fell over, do we book everyone for falling over? He never appealed for a penalty.

It looked like he was appealing from where we were sat, if we are talking about the incident with tarks?

Referee was fine imo, aside from the Martinez antics in the 1st half. Didn't have any huge decisions to make, rightly gave out yellow cards to Brownhill, Digne and Watkins.

Yeah he didn't appeal for anything, he fell over and quickly got up to try and win the ball back.

Yes, that's the one, then he fell over Tarks trying to get it back and started appealing, IIRC.

I didn't see anything with Watkins either - didn't do anything wrong unless there was a different incident I missed.

How many times when Pope tried to play quickly did Watkins impede him by standing too close.
So the same referee allows a keeper to time waste and allows them to stop the other keeper from playing quickly.
Very poor.

Genuinely mystifying how someone can referee in the Premier league without knowing the laws of the game. There's 2 massive clocks there, literally everyone can see he's got the ball in his hands for 20 seconds.

Is there a category for making flamboyant arm gestures in random directions whilst jogging around generally looking totally clueless as to why one is in the middle of a football stadium wearing an official uniform and armed with a whistle? A bit niche I know, but I’d probably give him 25 for that.

Not sure I’ve ever seen a referee carry less authority. He was like the school teacher who gets rubbers thrown at him by the kids every time he turns to face the chalk board.

Should have booked their goalie
Missed us taking a free kick whilst ball rolling
Called mings back on the pitch after an injury before he'd even left the field

All basic reffing decisions.... If he Carnt get them right, there's no hope for the big ones.

Falls for every trick in the book can’t wait to give fouls for very little contact, there must be better refs than him anywhere in the country even Sunday league.

Time the FA sorted out a professional organisation for refs in this country we are a laughing stock, the quality is abysmal, get an elite mix of different nationalities in and pay them the going rate.

The referee's awful performance probably did not affect the outcome of the game but he was truly abysmal.

It was absolutely incredible that Martinez did not leave the game with at least one yellow card for time wasting.
The added time of two minutes at the end of the first half was totally laughable and simply showed what an inept performance the referee had displayed. The two goal celebrations lasted at least one minute each and Martinez held the ball for at least 10 seconds on most occasions. My theory is that Coote was too fearful of awarding Martinez a yellow card in the first half just in case he might have to award him a second yellow in the second half.

Villa like all top sides will have a dossier on each ref and a strategy for how to handle them. They must have known Coote shows little authority, likes niggly fouls and gets influenced by big name players. I’m convinced if this were, say, Mike Dean, Villa’s tactics would have been different.

Probably didn’t influence the outcome though, we did that all on our own.

He was alright for 30 minutes, apart from failing to clamp down on Martinez. But once he’s failed to do that, and Villa stepped up their gamesmanship, he panicked, lost his composure and his decision making deteriorated as a result. The second half wasn’t difficult to referee but he did it notably badly.

Is it still a law of the game that the goalkeeper can only hold the ball for six seconds?
Now I know it’s not really policed in professional football, but today Martinez just took the wee wee.
Is it still a law that when the goal keeper transgresses on that law that an indirect free kick is awarded?
If so why did that useless piece of sh1t merely wave at him to hurry up, repeatedly, in the first half, rather than award such a free kick?
If we have professional referees that don’t apply the laws correctly what chance is there?
If that situation arose in a local league game and the referee ignored it he would get slated by the assessor, so why is it ok in the professional game.

Villa were exceptional at getting what they wanted from him. Leaving trailing legs, only looking like there was contact, going down, free kick. At corners, defenders rugby tackling our players to the ground, totally ingnored. Every time their keeper kicked from his hands, he was at least 4 yards outside the box.

He was basically just rubbish.

I thought refs gave one warning for time wasting and followed that with a booking? Does anyone know if that is the case.

If so, I am sure I counted at least four separate warnings given to their keeper without subsequent action.

He was shocking IMO. Martinez allowed to waste time which the ref indicated would be added on but obviously failed to do so. Villa players dropping like they’d been shot and ref rushing into their aid with free kicks. Ignoring blatant fouls on Burnley players and just waving play on (Weghorst first half wrestled to the ground as he tried to break down the right).

The worst one for me was when Mings headed the ball clear in the 2nd half and feigned serious injury. Burnley were trying hard to get back in the game and we were attacking on the right wing and the ref blew to stop our attack and get treatment for the England centre back. Sure enough he was right as rain after wasting another 2 minutes. I waited for the ref to restart with a drop ball (in the area where we were attacking) and with an instruction to Villa to not contest it. Instead he just handed the ball to Villa’s keeper and the game went on! I was apoplectic! By the last 20 minutes he had completely lost the plot and Villa’s players were bossing Burnley and virtually refereeing the match as well.

I feel better now I’ve got that off my chest. 😩

I know I’m biased but……

Apart from giving them the ball after their man feigned a head injury snd we had the ball in attack, the other really blatant, couldn't care less moment, was when Weghorst was just hauled down on the touchline. Neither lino nor ref even blinked. It was a clearest of FKs. As it happens, McNeil ran about 15 yards and somehow, in tge confusion, took the ball and had a shot. The Villa players obviously thought it was a FK.

Nothing for Burnley and anything goes from them, to waste time.

The thing that summed his performance up was when Chambers was getting subbed. He told him to leave at the closest point which was towards the Longside but Chambers decided he wasn’t going that way and walked towards the Jimmy Mac instead. Weak as p*** refereeing and IMO one of the worst, if not the worst, referee performances of the season.
