Cornet

Don't understand why, if he was not fit to start and not brought on at Ht when we were only 2 down, he was then sent on when the game was gone???

Presume he was sent on as a fitness exercise.

Completely agree and thought that at the time. It was a mistake not bringing him on at HT. I hope our fans now realise how important his presence is in our starting 11 and stop with the weird ‘where does Cornet fit in’ threads after he goes a game without scoring.

For 25 minutes with the instructions to take it easy and build up fitness. Why not. Did well getting a goal and will have confidence for the coming important games.

But was it worth the risk that he might do more damage for little gain?

Not sure. But it makes me wonder why some of our players don’t look at his goal return and think, you know what - maybe just this once I’ll try and make a run in behind.

'only two goals down'

Personally, the game was beyond us at that stage. It's been a very big 'ask' to even get us into a position of contention, especially after the debacle at Norwich. The manager alluded to 10 points gained from 5 games on the way home on the radio and there is no disputing that that is an excellent return. However, it has left us just clinging on to some sort of hope but the lack of 'bodies' available has really hit home in the last seven days and I fear that is what is going to cost us in the end. The supporters did their best today, though a little subdued obviously and the players tried very hard but to try and turn round the numbing reality that existed after Norwich into a momentous charge for survival with a depleted squad was always going to test the credentials of all those people in a position to affect the outcome. My daughter thought the early goal conceded was a major factor today; I think the awareness of so many players unavailable took its toll.

We’ll know by next weekend if that goal is likely to be relevant. Basically if Everton mess up one home game it could be.

As for Cornet in general, absolutely vital. He plays from the start, we could have won that game. Won’t do it in every game, but offers a different threat. May have pinned back the full back too. If he starts at Villa Park and against Newcastle I’d say we have a good chance.

He's class. Don't think he's been one hundred percent for a few months perhaps but he's easily one of our best players.

Couldn’t agree more. Although few have the pace to make and sustain that run.

But I lost count of the number of times first half that Dwight might’ve tried to get in behind but held back. Very frustrating and I can only imagine it’s because he won’t cross with his right. Need to swap Lennon and Dwight for me, at least in periods.

For all his faults of sometimes being defensively unstable and switching off, he is our best attacking player for years. He can create something out of nothing as well as having great movement to get into goal scoring positions.

Has an ego of sorts but he seems a nice bloke who the other lads all like and appreciate having around. I think he just loves being appreciated by the fans as Lyon fans never gave him any real support.

We will either make a good amount of money on him, or he’ll tear up the championship if we go down. Will be important for the rest of the season as well.

Your reference to 'only two goals down' suggested it wasn't an insurmountable lead. Of course it could have been worse but with a side depleted through injuries I couldn't see any way we were going to affect that scoreline positively. I'm not looking for an argument but merely pointing out that yesterday's game was probably one too many for a squad that have responded magnificently to Dyche's departure. Can we rally again? Well, I think that will be determined by the results this week of the other clubs around us.

If fit he has to start in our last 2 games anyway, Spurs might require a more pragmatic approach, so he may fins himself coming off the bench there.

He can be hit and miss, but he along with maybe Dwight is someone who can make things happen, and both will be vital in the final few games.

One upside to come out of yesterday was Cornet bagging that late consolation, helps our GD slightly, and hopefully gets his confidence back again.

Phew, thought that’s what you meant.

As I have said, a really frustrating decision not to change things at HT or before. A sub before HT would’ve sent a real message to fans. I’d have brought him on for Barnes (nothing about his performance, just that we needed extra pace up top) and to be honest I’d expect he’d have taken up a better position than Barnes did on Dwight’s shot, then you go in to HT bouncing and Villa nervy.

Can’t recall when we last saw an unenforced substitution before HT and I do understand they’re extremely rare generally, but that’s the kind of bravery and conviction I think we need now in our position.

He has a very pleasant nature about him from what I have seen. Very playful/laid back/care free type attitude and I can imagine him being someone great to have around.

Where as you sense with some players (not at Burnley even) where it’s all about them even when they are saying it’s a team game.

He’s a breath of fresh air

My son and daughter said exactly that on the way back to the car. Suppose my sceptical nature suggested there were a lot of 'if's' to deal with and so quietly I disagreed. All about opinions though.

He needs to start becasue it forces teams to defend a bit deeper. With Weghorst and Barnses up front, Spurs will be able to defend on the edge of OUR area and still not have to worry about us counter attacking.

I think it’s too late for pragmatism after Saturday’s bad loss.

Cornet was always going to get a run out against Villa at some stage in the second half and as there are no reports of any bad fitness reaction then he’s good to go.

We desperately need more mobility going forward for all of the final 3 games. I’m sure Dwight will benefit , on Saturday he got plenty of the ball in the first half but there was nothing happening in front of him.

You never know, if we can get some kind of offensive cohesion going against Spurs it should give the players confidence going into the final 2 winnable games.

Didn't Jim Thomson sign from Chelsea because Burnley was nearer to Scotland? He must have liked it as I believe he still lives in Burnley.

I think Jayrod would be as much a welcome sight as cornet if available. Jay has looked the epitome of one of our own on our mini revival with a George Boyd like approach in chasing everything, although he did tire in the latter games which is to be expected. But if we can get Jay back and Cornet on the left rotating and being given the room to bomb forward as and when needed, with Jay moving in and around Vout and Dwight attacking from the other side, we are a completely different prospect to what we witnessed on Saturday. Apologies if I have missed it, but is Jay still confirmed as out injured?

Completely agree. Our best half of football this season, attacking wise, was Southampton at home when the above mentioned quartet started together. Unfortunately since it’s been Cornet then Jay with injuries.

We need Maxwell back for her last 3 games if we are to have a chance of staying up. Yes he's a bit flimsy and quirky but with him and McNeil in the team we'll create loads just need some bugger to put the chances away. Come on Wout time to step up. Agree with ClaretAL . Need Jay back too not because he's suddenly going to start banging them in but Barnes and WW don't work. Lennon shouldn't be starting unless we are desperate.

We need to have a more solid back four/five with one up top and that may allow Cornet and McNeil more options to attack and have a go

Yeah could work. 451 might be worth a shot. Though not sure the players will be able to adapt in time after having to stick to a 442 and the framework for years plus its probably not the right time now. 451 defending 4231 attacking.

Defending
Pope
Roberts Collins Tarks/Long/Mee Taylor
McNeil Brownhill Cork Stephens(shudder) Cornet
Wout

Attacking 4231 that's obvious who goes where. It's just too late in the season unless they've been trying something in training. Theres loads of things we can try but with Dyche tactics still in their head and the players not really good enough its difficult. Just hope the next manager is able yo be flexible and train the players in away to be able to adapt to different formations.

I’ve heard back for newcastle but just purely rumours on a group chat.
Seen as though there is a 3 day gap between Villa and Newcastle I’m sure its either he is fit for both or neither.

Yeh , rumours on a group chat is all you can offer then?

Just out of interest what is the group chat , not the one that includes the club physios ?
