Is that an expression of fear in his eyes? :)

Wasn't Ashley Barnes substituted against Aston Villa?

He's not injured as well is he? Or was it a tactical substitution?

I was under the impression that he was injured. If not then obviously he gets in.

It is horribly disloyal and cynical of me to ponder whether this is out of contract players becoming overly protective of themselves.

Unless they have some pre-nups signed it's a very risky period for them career wise.
Tarks' injury could have happened a month ago. he was throwing himself at everything.
I can't see him protecting himself.

Don't recall Shackell having any injury - he just downed tools in pre-season.
Sadly, that is what I was hinting at. Wonder if his agent had said....you could go to Villa or Newcastle....maybe even Totteringham....don't let the players you would replace, do you before we have a chance to sign anything....look at Matej Vydra!

No question Tarks is a genuine guy and a great pro. Do t think he has ever shirked a tackle in his time with us. He will be a huge miss if he goes. Hope we can get him back for at least the Newcastle game. Our best chance of staying without him is Leeds losing their last 2 although I don’t think that will happen

Sad that Tarky has played his last game for us without a chance for us to give him a well deserved send off..

Indeed he's been a fantastic pro and I wasn't thinking only of him.

And I don't suppose mid-table players really put their flip flops on and depart for the beach towards the end of a season.

Things play with your head often quite unconsciously.

I don't doubt he has a real injury... nor am I questioning his professionalism just wondering how I would feel a couple of games from a big contract with an uncomfortable twinge.

Says more about me than Tarko, tbh...!

I'm not sure about this "on the beach" thing either.
I guess it's possible that some players ease off, but plenty are still playing for their futures...
and their professional pride.

Or is the whole of the PL just a mass of cynicism?

I think if you looked back at our results in previous years after survival, they drop off. Hard to pinpoint it. I don’t think it’s lack of professionalism, just that players performances ease 5% when there’s nothing at stake. Human nature, really.

I’d much rather be playing Spurs on Sunday with them in the highest league position they could attain, either way.

yes, but they've been told that 17th is good enough.
On the basis of what you are saying should about a third of PL clubs drop off in terms of effort once they are safe (say 40 points?) ?

Who's captain?
Brownhill? Pieters is a possibility is he starts
Barnes I reckon

Not sure why he’d do a 400 mile round trip to play and then feign an injury next game. Not to mention that these things are all confirmed by scans. Tarks has consistently shown how committed he is in his performances. A true leader.

I find this animosity to Kev Long completely unacceptable. He's been a great signing for us and always gives his best.

Not sure it’s animosity by most but it’s concerning when he is lining up against two of the best strikers in the league in Kane and Son, particularly when we are desperate for points. I’m sure David Jones Mk1 and Mark Ford gave their best but it wasn’t good enough.

If it Collins and Long, it was very difficult for King. He was out of his comfort position and looked very right footed!

I don't think I'm being unfair in saying that I can't think of another BFC (EPL) defender who gets the wrong side of the player he's marking more regularly than KL.

I may be missing something bleeding obvious here, but why would Long be good enough? He's fourth choice. By definition, fourth choice for Burnley is not going to be Mee or Tarkowski quality, because clubs like Burnley can't afford to have two reserves as good as the first team. We do well to have one.

If Long was any better, he wouldn't be here. If he was any worse, he wouldn't be here. He's a fourth choice centre half for a club with a low budget.

To keep the damage to something around that level would be a sensible objective for today, and we'll probably need a fair wind to achieve that.

I think 4 is the very minimum we'd concede..and that's a fairly optimistic view...and it's not unrealistic to suggest that a figure of 8 or even 9 could be in reach. Spurs will fancy themselves for a panful today after their showing on the turf.

It's hard to see us creating a chance all day to be fair..

But I'm remaining upbeat given that it'll still be in our hands come tea time, despite Leeds inevitable win against the Seagulls.

I really don't think it's "animosity". It's the stark realisation that although he's clearly a good player, he's not quite good enough for a PL defence and our chances of pulling the miracle off over the next 3 games (not specifically today) are greatly reduced by having to select him and not having Mee and/or Tarks available. I get he gives his all, but he's been here years and years and other CBs are constantly brought in and placed above him in the pecking order and there's a reason for that.

I suggest you have a bet as the odds of us losing by 4 or more is about 6/1 sounds like you make it an odds on shot.

Last time Kane played against Long , Spurs won 1-0 thanks to a last minute goal from Eriksen. Long had Kane in his back pocket :D
Last time Kane played Long was last season. He assisted and Son scored at Turf.
