What Chants are Acceptable?

A Tottenham fans group has condemned the singing of the traditional "Sign On" chant that is routinely aimed at scousers up and down the country.

Apparently the chant is not what "Tottenham are about" and they are "better" than that.

At what point does a chant become unacceptably bad taste and when does condemning something intended as part of the mickey-taking between rival fans become po-faced?

I read this earlier and thought it was ridiculous.

Ironically, the area where Tottenham Stadium is based has the highest unemployment rate in the country.

Quite right o Tottenham to condemn it though. The richest capitol in the world with subsidised public transport systems taking the Micky out of any Northern poverty is more than a little rich; after the establishment has reorientated all the wealth from the North, that made the country vastly wealthy; to the South for their benefit.

Similarly the "Jack Walker is no longer on this earth" chant could do with consigning to the bin too

Agree 100% the first makes my skin crawl.
Disagree 100% with you opposition to the second. That is 100% what the rivalry is about - Burnley/Blackburn rivalry even got a special mention in the MofD 10 Best Derbies… despite it has barely happened in the Premier. All three pundits admitted that our Derby is a bit special. NO PROBLEM AT ALL…. ******* Rovers, the exception that proves/tests the rule.

All depends what triggers you and those around in. In todays PC world anything can be deemed offensive. In the early 80's on the Longside I doubt anything was taboo. Race , Man Utd disaster, Welsh slag heap disaster even Nazi salutes etc , I think I have heard it all. Even today we sing about a dead local business business dying on a carpet, Female genitals and numerous swear words. I have been taking my lad on since he was 4-5 and he has learned what's said on the Turf stays on the Turf. For me personally OTT is about race, sexual orientation or anything to do with kids. I am far from being PC but they needs to limits, a bit of swearing and banter is fine for me.People with young kids who don't want them exposed to this or sensitive people tend to stay away from the CF stand or the CF /JH end near the tunnel.

Never liked the Bill Fox song. I met him as a schoolboy and he was a really really nice bloke, he laughed like hell when he asked who my favourite player was and I replied “Billy Hamilton” (as a guest of Blackburn Rovers).

The seventies were a different time, though for many of your examples… yes they did all those things, but the vast majority were completely ignorant of the world outside Burnley, other than in the press. We forget that we were all far more ignorant then, in everything except local socialisation and manners.

We've come a long way from the terrace chants of the 70s and 80s.But I doubt swearing will never be eradicated from football songs most people can't say three words without at least one of them being effin.Two chants what make me cringe "your support is not very good" and the "I wanna go home coz your town is a dump" chant

Worst one ever was the Abervan chants to Cardiff, not sure you could sink lower.
The Scousers and Mancs though are quite repulsive with the Hillsborough and Munich chants.

I must admit I do miss, "Get your tips out for the lads".

I accept it is a no no, however, I remember an away match where the directors and their wives had to walk around the perimeter, for some reason. There was a fairly ok directors wife (looked good for her age) and everyone recognised that she was well presented. The song was sung as she passed the away end and she beamed. She recognised it was about her, not the others and positively beamed with joy. A huge smile and a wave and a cheer from the away end crowd.
Fun moment for all.

When I started taking my kids to football, I made it clear that chants/songs homophobic, sexist, racist and calling someone a nonce/child abusers were off limits.

Anything else was fair game within reason, need to have some good back and forth between fans at a game or it just makes things boring.

Pretty rare these days to ever hear anything racist or seriously offensive . Wasn’t the harmless “ sign on” chant last sung around 1981 anyway ? And not heard “ whose that dying on the runway at a match “ etc for almost ever . Though I hear Leeds fans still enjoy this

Fortunately, things have improved massively in English football grounds above all in terms of racist chants.

But you can't stop everything. It's just impossible.
