Beware of " free " bets

Post by Foreverly Claret » Wed May 11, 2022 10:05 pm

Anyone on here help me...I know there are a few fans who subscribe to the Board who like a bet.

Background .I have an account with William Hill...with about £ 100 in it.

I backed the winner of the Grand National.

Because I backed the winner WH gave me a free £ 10 bet .

They said I had until 14/05 to place the bet.

When I logged in today to use the bet they told me it expired on the 11 th .Fortunately I had proof of their original offer and the free bet was reinstated .

so today I used the free bet .....8.30 at Bath..Girl in the Picture...£ 10 win .I took 3s although the SP was 9/2 . Girl won.

Logged in at 8.45 .Bet suspended !!!!

I've just spent an hour on a web chat line trying to get an answer as to why my bet was suspended. I might as well have been talking to Jon Moss !!

Problem is I don't know what I've done wrong..they took the bet OK this morning .Girl on the chat line more or less ****** me off and said I'd have to get in touch tomorrow which , after tonight's experience , doesn't bode well .How the heck do you get to talk to somebody about stuff like this.

HELP !!!!!!

Good news..next door neighbour is a Leeds fan and he's just come home crying !!!!! UTC

Go into a will hill store and see if they will ring the head office for you.

Free bets are always generally suspended.

If it is still an active bet which has not been settled yet then it might just be taking longer than normal, if it has been settled as a losing bet then definitely keep getting in touch with them.

Just be patient , they are not in a hurry to payout.
I have a William Hill a/c myself. There is never a free bet
as you always have to spend money first. This is not an honourable trade.

When you have a free bet online it automatically gets suspended to stop someone from cashing out. But it should be settled shortly after the win. Sometimes it can take a while depending on the bookie. Will Hill is crap use skybet/bet365/betfair from now on. Usually better prices too.

When was the last time you saw a bookie at a food bank?

What!, you’ve never been to a food bank?

Keep betting!

Get almost weekly free bets from bet365, have cashed out £150 this year, haven't deposited anything.
Some good luck on horses (pick randomly on name/ odds) and few football related.
But will echo others on it being tempting, others might get hooked and use their own money

And next in on tonight’s big expose, why Tesco’s are untrustworthy because they only give you Club Card vouchers if you shop with them.

Makes me laugh more the amount/severity of betting the average joe does and how they pass off like they’re constantly bettering the bookies.

I bet around 15 quid a week. I see it as a form of entertainment but with a chance of either A - getting my money back or B - being better off money wise. I could go out and spend more money at the pub, or on a day out with zero chance of recovering any outlay. Yes, we know the odds are heavily in the bookies favour!

Good for you.

I just think it should be kept personal - promotion of betting culture & companies drags people into it.

Take the free bets above, the bookies don’t do it to be generous, it’s like a drug dealer giving someone a sample.

We only sing when we're winning. By that, I mean people are much more likelier to remember their wins, rather than their losses. Everyone does this, including me, and I only do a couple of quid per week on a 'both teams to score' bet, along with a £5.00 season long four-fold acca.

I think I’ve bet the grand sum of £10 overall in my lifetime. One of those bets was a quid on an accumulator that won be £170.

Take that bookies!

Isn't that the actual story that an addicted gambler starts out with?

All in surplus, then it just tips, so you accept putting in a few quid to keep going. All well for a bit, then repeat. Then repeat more often, as it's fun. Etc

If it’s a bit of a flutter that you can afford to lose ( and accept you are u likely to ever come out on top) and you put a cap on it it’s not. If you can can’t control it and have an addictive personality then it is. Having an alcoholic drink isn’t a mugs game but the same rules apply if you can’t control it.

Agree but you wouldn’t see a poster or people starting threads with discount beer sales or whatever.

The betting one just seems to hit differently, people get suckered into losing sometimes a significant bit of money from peer pressure/culture.

Seen it happen myself far too often, usually when lads are round watching footy then boxing and a poker game after.. lads on not much more than min wage end up down 100 or so plus quid for no real reason

Ultimately, yes they are…. But culture/nurture/surroundings shape our abilities and the actions we individually make.

Fine if you can handle it.

Hell of a lot can't.
