Can't defend very well but when you're playing for a top side it's all about attack.

Rubbish, did you watch the FA Cup final the other day? He was outstanding defensively. As he was in the semi v City and in the League Cup final a month ago v Chelsea. Yes he has some weaknesses such as defending the back post crosses but it’s a complete myth that he can’t defend.

That's 1 position that Southgate is blessed in.

He has struggled many a time against McNeil which tells you all you need to know.

I’m surprised he’s had enough time outside McNeil’s pocket to win all those things.

I think maybe twice… yet McNeil didn’t score or assist once. And no, that doesn’t tell me or anyone ‘all you need to know’. What is more telling is being part of one of the best teams and defences in the world and having won all trophies possible at the age of 23.

Certainly do. Dwight had him on toast that night. Great stuff! :D

Southgate is blessed all over the pitch........he just can't figure out his best 11 & probably never will.

File under Roberto Martinez who's managed to win nothing with THAT line-up.

Point being, if he's put on toast by a player of McNeil's quality, then he is not very good defensively.
He's in that team because they are an attacking outfit who bring the game to other teams. He does not have very good defensive qualities, but he more than makes up for that in attack.

I'm not taking away from how good he is, just illustrating his strengths are in attack, not defence.

His defending has improved dramatically over the last two years. Early on he just looked like a winger stuck at FB but not any longer. I still think Reece James just edges him for England.

He will be getting better and better with experience. We saw that with Trippier as he got older who also is a very attacking full back. It's pretty normal I think.

Nonetheless I think it's always going to be secondary in his game to attacking but that's true of most full backs today.

Currently he's the 3 best English full back and he's quite a way behind the better two.
