It was the 2 smirks from Friend that I found more offensive than the actual decision. He clearly enjoyed giving it which is even more despicable than the error

It's probably fair to say we haven't had the run of the VAR decisions overall this season. But let's not kid ourselves as to why we're halfway through the trap door.

Failure to invest, failure to adapt and a generally over-cautious approach.

The Prem largesse that other clubs generally pumped into the playing side, found its way (by whatever route) into Mr Garlicks back sack. That's the reality.

There was no error, it was a penalty. You can’t defend with your arms in that position. Friend didn't see it so var intervened which is what it’s there for. Harsh penalty admitted but in the current climate as aggrieved as I am it’s correct. Otherwise Friend did okay.

Apart from a little smirk and pause before giving the pen yeah I guess so.

Referees decision is final and referee has final decision.
I know that, but it's why VAR doesn't work as it should. If it doesn't exist then the penalty isn't given, it's that simple.

Just to add had it been the other way round, under the current rules, I would have expected a penalty.

Absolutely no arguments from me as tough as it is to accept.
Every football fan knows that if the ball strikes the arm which is away from the body in the penalty box it will be given as a penalty.

I don't remember that incident at all. Was that in the penalty area? If so looks like we should have had a penalty as well.

I guarantee that doesn’t get checked at the opposite end.

Not a conspiracy, just a fact how the bigger clubs are favoured.

His arms were in that position as he’d just been nudged and was finding balance. That’s NOT a penalty according to the law.

Over 24 hours later and I've changed my mind. Friend is a massive massive massive massive "look at me" tosspot rather then just being a tosspot.

The game at Turf Moor.

What I dont understand is why wasn’t Friend shown the full incident from start to finish. How can he judge the handball decision properly from the repeat 0.75second loop that he gets to watch. For me it’s Stuart Atwell who was the tosser on this occasion. Not saying Friend isn’t.

So when the ball hit Sessegnon‘s elbow that should have been given as a penalty then ?

Super slow motion distorts reality massively too. Watch replays in normal speed, you know, the speed the game is played at.

This article sums up most of my thoughts on VAR nicely.

And some of the comments below the article sum up how ridiculous the whole argument has got. There are genuine football fans who believe that the only possible reason for Barnes having his arm stretched out was to try and stop the ball from being played away from goal. They have completely forgotten that that a player, when running, turning, or fighting off the man who is holding him, does not normally do all those things with his arms held rigidly by his side.

And unfortunately, the supposedly-intelligent people who make the rules have forgotten that as well.

This is true

But don't you think its a bit, well, desperate?

Its the rules (a **** rule no doubt)

And if we get relegated, we'll have been relegated because we've not been good enough over the season

It’s perfectly natural to have the view that all clubs get similar decisions and there is no bias. It’s also natural to have the view that certain clubs are favoured on decisions and there is obvious bias.

The truth is likely to be as on most things, somewhere inbetween.

There are recent examples of games when we are trailing at half time when there was a similar amount of stoppages during the half, where 1 added minute was played. On Sunday they played 4 minutes. The rationale if you are being cynical would be that the big club needing a goal or 2 gets more allotted playing time to get the goal. I’m also pretty sure that at the other end having put a simple chance wide we would not be getting that penalty. The half time whistle would just have blown.

Tbh if the officials didn’t have previous for ineptness and circumstantial bias we probably wouldn’t need to say up yours VAR and Kevin Friend. It’s probably the fact that we have been blessed with competent and excellent referees like Mike Dean and Martin Atkinson, where we never need to worry about circumstantial bias, that show up the murky waters aligned with some of the worst refs.

Dean himself has given 2 penalties against us in 1 half against a team from his native Merseyside but did anyone think he was being other than honest in his review of the situation. I certainly didn’t. However, as soon as I saw Sunday’s ref for such an important game, I knew that we would be discussing things like this all week.

Quite right.

Football is played in real time so it needs to be refereed in real time.

Replays are fine, but judging them in super slow motion distorts everything.

If you're being less cynical, you might believe that the 4 minutes' first half injury time was something to do with the 3+ minutes delay when Cornet was being treated for a cut.

Well aware of the Cornet issue stoppage as I was at the game. The comments are more about the lack of consistency where we should have had in excess of 1 minute in previous games where we were chasing a win. I think it was the Villa game when 1 minute was a nonsense. They don’t apply the rules consistently from game to game.
