Pope’s penalty record

Post by joey13 » Mon May 16, 2022 5:00 pm

Anyone know how many penalties he’s faced and saved during his time with us ?

Not sure but oddly I preferred what he did on Sunday, rather than just diving to a predetermined side which is almost always the wrong way.

We hear how goalkeepers do their homework, guess what, strikers do as well. If they know a keeper guesses early they wait and roll it in the other side.

Personally think staying in the middle is the right call particularly in a penalty shootout.

My son keeps banging on about some research he's seen about penalties. The best chance of saving one, apparently, is not to dive one way or the other but do what NP did yesterday. The reason goalies dive is to be seen to be making an effort rather than standing in the middle of the goal

It was one of the best penalties you'll ever see.

No saving that yesterday.

17/18:
Man City away - Aguero scored
Arsenal home - Sanchez scored
Tottenham home - Kane scored

19/20:
Wolves away - Jimenez scored
Chelsea away - Jorginho scored
Tottenham home - Alli scored
Man City away - Mahrez scored

20/21:
Newcastle away - Wilson scored
Wolves home - Silva scored
Leeds away - Bamford scored
Bournemouth home (FA Cup) - Stanislas scored

21/22:
Brentford away - Toney scored
Everton home - Richarlison scored x 2
Tottenham away - Kane scored

I haven't checked the line ups so cannot confirm Pope played in all of these, but these are the games I found when penalties were scored against us, without checking each game one at a time I would struggle seeing penalties missed against us.

Graham Alexander said that in pressure situations he went high and fairly central, as in a big game it's very unlikely a keeper will risk not diving to either side.

Your Son is spot on Goddy

Approx 3O% of penalties go to the right
30% to the left
40% centrally
So a keeper has the best chance if he stays in the middle and relies on his reflexes for anything saveable that isn’t going into the extreme corners.

Two keepers would not have saved that penalty.

What this research doesn't account for (because it never happens) is that any goalie who makes a habit of standing up will soon find 0% of penalties against him are going down the middle.

Pope did the right thing by standing still, but if I was him I would have stood on my right hand post - it would have been a simple save.

This. I don’t like them just standing in the middle but even if he’d gone the right way he wouldn’t have kept that out. Extremely well placed. Kane is one of the best at it.

As tiger says it's generally said to be somewhere between 75% and max. 80%.

Tony will know this but I believe the only penalty we've missed in the last six seasons was the last one we were given.

Was given a stat when I was very young. 9 of 10 penalty takers point the toe of their standing foot the way the shot is going. Watching for this every time one is on telly it is still not far off.
Please Nick don’t wait for the ball to be hit, just watch the standing foot, keep one foot on the line and away you go.

Cornet was the first to fail from the penalty spot for us since Andre Gray at Reading in 2016.

I still believe the seconds saved diving early directly result in the keeper going the wrong way they otherwise would have saved - down the centre and within 3 foot either side, and with Pope’s agility and size probably more.

True, however, a middle kicker would need to adjust and it may become apparent, which way it is going. So keeper can dive.

I've said for a while that any keeper that refuses to guess and goes for the ball will let in good penalties but puts extra pressure on the taker knowing it has to be near the corner. They'd save the rarer ones down the middle, force more wide and have chances at getting something on poor or weak penalties sent either side.

I know it's not quite that simple but guessing is a low percentage game so why not try it?

Sure I saw a penalty over the weekend where the keeper stood off center, more to the right of the goal as the kicker was taking it (might have been Reya for Brentford)

Thanks, Tony.

A very good record especially given the countless penalties we have been awarded.
