Buying a caravan Internet issues

Post by AwayClaret » Tue May 17, 2022 4:48 pm

Buying a tourer but when you go to holiday parks the Internet is mostly poor. I have a mobile with unlimited data but that's usually hit and miss when away. Want to be able to use a firestick, xbox and obviously our mobiles (if not getting a signal). So has anyone any advice please?

Download some videos before you go or use a DVD player.

Otherwise, enjoy the countryside and getting away from the internet.

Either pay for the holiday parks paid WIFI or buy the 10 a month unlimited Internet devices from Carphone warehouse.

The best advice we can give you if buying a 2nd hand caravan is get the damp levels checked before buying.

Check coverage maps before you go and buy a plug in wireless modem. These have sim cards inside and use the same networks phones can.

The downside to this is some areas may not have any coverage at all, or different areas will only cover certain networks.

Only way around that is downloading shows before you go or signing up to satellite internet.

Some campsites may have their own WiFi you can use.

First thing after buying,Join the Caravan and camping club and go on their THS meetings. Far far cheaper than going on big sites and paying a fortune ..

Different people need different things. We have a motorhome but often stay on sites for 5 nights or more which gives no benefit over a caravan.
In fact, you don't often have a small car to nip into town with like you would with a caravan. Motorhomes can be difficult to drive and park in busy places.

Peak motorhome is for 2 people touring the country staying the odd night in places.

My neighbour tows a Suzuki Jimny behind his motorhome so has no problems touring away from the sites

Thanks for all the advice. We're a youngish family so just thought we'd go for a tourer then we can travel all-over. Looked at motorhome but it can be difficult taking that to a lot of places if we decide to have a trip out whilst away so tourer is more convenient for us.

Exactly the reason we got a tourer a good few years ago now, means once on site and set up we still have the car to get around and have days out. I have an EE mobile contract and have the unlimited data package, I then use my phone as a hot-spot in the caravan for the firestick, kids ipads etc in an evening or when I need to watch the clarets. I find EE to generally have great coverage and don't have many if any problems with signal down here in the Somerset or in Devon, Dorset and Cornwall.

Bloke at work has just spent 32k on a new caravan. If you think you can get a Premier Inn/Travelodge room for about £50 a night, you can have 640 nights away in a hotel room for the price of dragging a tin shack around behind you car, being hated by the constant queue of cars you are holding up and spending the weekend living in a field.
