Your Team vs Villa?
Your Team vs Villa?
I would assume we will stick with 5 at the back
Sounded like tarks could be back
Pope
Roberts Lowton Tarks Collins Taylor
Mcneil Browhill Cork
Cornet Barnes
Dont think you can drop ash on current form

Same formation. If Tarks is fit, stick him in for Lowton at CB.

Re: Your Team vs Villa?
I’d go same again, unless Tarky and Jay are fit - if they are I’d have them in for Barnes and Long/Lowton.
Re: Your Team vs Villa?
I think JonBerro means that Barnsey has been looking considerably sharper in recent games compared to his form - when he's been fit - in the last 12 months. He's come close to scoring on a few occasions.

Re: Your Team vs Villa?
Ideally we need a win as I can’t see us getting much on Sunday.
So based on that I’m going for an attacking line up in the hope we can put a few past them. (If we needed a draw I would go 3 at the back but I just can’t see us scoring in that formation).
Pope
Lowton, Tarks, Collins, Taylor
McNeil, Brownhill, Cork, Cornet
Barnes, Jay

Re: Your Team vs Villa?
After the way we performed against Villa at home i would go same formation as Sunday, which was so close to gaining us at least a point. We cannot go 4 4 2 , play a high line and allow Ings and co to run onto through balls.

Not sure why you think we can’t get anything from Newcastle at home in front of a packed Turf.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 8:03 amIdeally we need a win as I can’t see us getting much on Sunday.

We had some decent chances against Spurs, who are a far, far better defensive unit than Villa. Also I’d be very surprised, to see both Tark and Jay in the team. Villa caused us all sorts of problems in between our centre halves with Watkins / Ings running while having 3 in the middle will help tighten gaps which the likes of Coutinho / Buendia like to exploit.
Same team and system as at Spurs for me with Tarks in for Lowton / Jay in for Barnes if both are fit.

They did cause us problems but I think that was more due to how far forward we pushed our midfield in that game.
The way newcastle are playing in the last three months I’m not sure we will even get a draw against them. Tonight needs to be a win IMO.

Like I say, Villa’s defence is already a bit iffy and especially without Konsa / possibly Martinez, I’d expect they will give us more chances. Plus, we can always change to 4-4-2 within the match.
Newcastle do look good albeit their form away over the last 6 is won 2 lost 4, 4 losses in the last 5 in fact. While we have won 3 out of the last 4 at home. I’d rather be at home with the crowd behind than away to the 3rd most inform team in the league (Brentford), put it that way!
Win tonight would obviously be massive but I’d snap your hand off for a point right now!

Re: Your Team vs Villa?
For all this talk about Newcastle’s form, if ai remember rightly they had loads of home games in succession and all those wins apart from Norwich were just by a single goal, one was a Wood penalty and the other was deep into injury time. They also lost at Everton (albeit after dominating).
Nonetheless I do believe a point is needed tonight or Newcastle could pick us off while we desperately pour forwards.
So I would stick to a back five and leave the team unchanged unless Tarky is fit in which case it is him for Long. Then Wout and Jay to come off the bench, Jay only if needed.
Villa are likely to have one or two younger players in, they need targeting. Barnes and Maxwel could be good at that, in their different ways.

Re: Your Team vs Villa?
I'd be happy with the same team/shape too, unless Tarkowski is ready in which case put him in for probably Lowton. No fan of Barnes but he's done OK, sharpness is coming gradually and he's certainly been no worse than WW has played lately. If a chance was to fall to one of them I know which one I'd rather on the end of it and it definitely isn't Big Boi. In what is probably going to be a tight and tense game, Barnes' ability to win soft FKs could be crucial given our threat from set pieces.

First 10 mins. Need a couple of hard challenges on Ings and Martinez. We’re at the stage now that Queensbury rules go out of the window. We have injuries. Need to weaken their chances of hurting us too.

I think we also need the same formation v Newcastle on Sunday to stifle StMaximin, who always seems to have one of his 2 or 3 good games per season against us.
Re: Your Team vs Villa?
I’d like to see if Barnes and Cornet can play together up front so I’d start with:
——————————Pope
—————Lowton Collins Long
Roberts—————————————Taylor
———Brownhill——Cork——McNeil
——————Barnes———Cornet

That's fine unless one of our guys sees red, or injures themselves in the process, I do agree we need to be more aggressive than at TM, stand off Villa and with the quality in their ranks they'll hurt us.Father Jack wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 12:41 pmFirst 10 mins. Re: Your Team vs Villa?
Sensibly speaking we probably need to play the same team as against Spurs.
I think Barnes buys us a lot of possession in their half with his ability to be awkward and win free kicks, which is useful away from home. He also looks like he's got a goal in him.
We can't go back to the 4-4-2 that lost the match at Turf because Watkins. Ings and Buendia just had too much time and space in front of the back four.
Jay is a good call but for me he is a good number 10 and doesn't necessarily lead the line, which you need when Cornet is up front. And Wout is a bit of an enigma - everything you think he would be good at he isn't and all the things you think would be a struggle aren't..
Nothing really at stake for Villa but I'm guessing Steven Gerrard will want as high a place finish as possible in front of their own fans. Funnily enough the game on Sunday maybe more on their minds simply because they won't want to get turned over in the seasons showpiece game.
Hoping for a win, expecting a draw and fearing a loss.

Re: Your Team vs Villa?
I just hope we are willing to take bookings and accept criticism for our play tonight - if needed.
If we get the lead we should be timewasting like no team ever has before - each player until they are each booked. Dropping down for 'head injuries' every 5 minutes, cramp, being unable to roll off the pitch, standing in the centre circle when about to be subbed, pretending we're going to play it short (LOL) from a goal kick and then waving players away from the box to belt it upfield after spending 30 seconds considering it etc. We should be tripping up, shirt pulling and willing to 'take one for the team' at all times tonight when Villa are breaking, again, until on a booking. We should be using the likes of Bardsley, Pieters and Long (if Tarky is playing) as substitutes with 5-10 minutes to go if defending a lead, just to come on, smash it upfield and be other players capable of taking bookings.
This might all sound OTT, but we need to treat tonight like our lives depend on it and take every advantage we possibly can - fair or not.

Re: Your Team vs Villa?
One thing's for certain is that the first eleven and subs bench will be the same for both games.
If the likes of Tarkowski, Mee, Jay-Rod and Pieters aren't even on the bench tonight they certainly won't be there on Sunday.
