The League Liner

Post by Pickles » Sat May 21, 2022 7:46 pm

On the train North from London last night there were flyers stating trains after 7pm are alcohol free and trains can't wait if games go to extra time and penalties. It reminded me of a couple of weeks ago on 6Music when Craig Charles mentioned the League Liner, I think referring to it as the "disco train." I like to think I'm fairly clued up on football and Burnley but I'd never heard of it. So I read a few bits and pieces about it. Did anyone on the board use it? Any good? Any stories?

A train owned by the Football League to transport fans to away games. It's first ever journey was from Burnley taking Clarets to QPR.

"It was called the League Liner, an early-seventies British Rail train equipped to cater for football supporters travelling away. The coaches offered music, basic VT machines showing football and the aforementioned 'disco carriage'."

I was on the first one to QPR. Bit weird dancing in the disco carriage and sharing a train with Bob Lord. Don’t remember it lasted long

I've been looking for years for any railway related memorabilia related to the League Liner, handbills, tickets, posters, you name it but absolutely nothing doing.
If anybody happens to have anything, could you ease let me know. Just to know it survived would be brilliant.

Anorak alert. The League liner for the QPR game was hauled by English Electric Type 4, later Class 50, locomotive 423, which was later renamed ‘Howe’. Read into that what you will
