Awful management, I said before the game we gave up a ton of chances and corners at Villa. Unbelievably naive to start that shape when needing to win at home, I'd rather we went down attacking, instead we went down with a whimper, in Dyche fashion, wellying it forward to Cornet.

Weghorst 5

Wrong starting 11 and a shocker of a handball from Collins was exactly what we didn’t need. From there it was all uphill.

We needed 3 or 4 8s today to make sure we did the business, but the fact is we bombed. I don't think anyone actually had a good game.

I'm not sure what the plan was, but sadly we looked totally lost.
Maybe 3 games in 7 days caught up with us, but yto be honest the team didn't look like a Premier league one, and that bench would look scary for a championship side.

Appalling display today and not been good enough all season so got what we deserved ultimately.
The exit door is going to get some hammer this close season.
I will be shocked if there is more than 3-4 players starting the new season who finished this one.
Absolutely gutted after I had resigned myself to relegation at Easter after SD was sacked but MJ came in and gave us hope again so it feels like we’ve been relegated twice!
I really worry about where we go now….

We never looked like a team fighting for their lives there barring a few second half corners. No one stands out I don’t think.

Can't believe how passive we were for 60 minutes, then we had a good go for about fifteen, but it was too late by then

Management massively over thought this one I think with that formation and line up

Worried starting Barnes might have been a mistake, and we looked a lot better when Weghorst came on (not great btw, but a hell of a lot better than the first half sleep walk to relegation)

Just glad the season is over to be honest, and we've not been good enough far too often which is why we've been relegated

Tepid display for 60 mins and no quality at any time.
Newcastle looked more up for it. Which really does speak volumes.

I feel age has caught up with too many in the squad.

Will be a very different team that kicks off in a few weeks.

A performance to sum up a season. Toothless, fairly clueless and over all just not good enough.
Pope 6
The rest can have a 5 because they tried.

Thanks to Barnes, Cork and Tarks for all they have done for the club and good luck in the future.

Thought Collins did well other than the couple of mistakes first half, McNeill a curates egg, Barnes and Brownhill both put a shift in but for me our other recent signings were shocking today.

Weghorst is slower than a steamroller
Roberts - well Collins delivered more quality than him
Cornet - the best of the bunch but really he looks like he's in his own bubble most of the time. If anyone offers anything over what we bought him for I would take it.

We’ve been awful most of the season and deserve to go down. Action should have been taken sooner by the board. A very strange time to do it.

Pope 6 kicking awful though today
Roberts 5
Collins 4 Very costly mistake
Tarkowski 6
Long 5
Taylor 5
Brownhill 5 not PL quality
Cork 5
McNeil 6
Barnes 5 sadly past it other than pens
Cornet 6

Subs
Weghorst 5 doesn’t impact the game
Lennon 5 same

We were way off where we needed to be. Some big changes ahead ….,,

Re: Burnley v Newcastle - Player Ratings

An era ends.

Pope - 7 - a couple of excellent saves but his kicking reflected the nerves around the squad.

Collins - 5 - roamed forward in the second half to reasonable effect and did well for the goal, but the penalty was inexplicable as was the hopelessly naive defending which led to that corner in the first place, and he betrayed his nerves on other occasions too. He’s a fine player in the making but he’s one who will benefit from a year in Championship if we can keep him.

Taylor - 6 - did ok and produced a couple of fine deliveries, even if it wasn’t consistent.

Long - 5 - rarely completely exposed but equally his limitations were rarely hidden either, especially for the second goal and generally in possession.

Tarkowski - 8 - our best player throughout and it’s a shame his Burnley career ends this way.

Cork - 6 - found a gear in the last 25 minutes but it was too late by then, and whilst the set up of the team didn’t help he was uncharacteristically wasteful and rushed in the first half.

Brownhill - 6 - scrapped well throughout but should have done better when he got into the box in the first half and generally this set up exposed his limitations rather than allowing him to play to his strengths.

Roberts - 3 - a bizarre time to experiment on this scale, and the experiment fell utterly flat. Didn’t know whether to press on or hold like a full back, uncontrolled receiving the ball with his back to goal as is required of a wide player, and lacked the pace or quality to slide Cornet through on the counter attack or support Barnes in general play. Apart from this he was another afflicted by nerves and lacking any sort of composure as a result.

McNeil - 5 - a couple of sumptuous passes when he drifted into or was redeployed to the centre, particularly the world class ball to Collins which unlocked our goal, but in the first half he was too easily closed down on the left, which was not his fault, and later on he was guilty too often of wanting too much time for the perfect pass rather than getting on with delivering, which very much was his fault.

Cornet - 6 - lively in the second half after an anonymous first half.

Barnes - 5 - hustled and bustled but he was no sort of feature on the first half and whilst he was better after the break with more support around him, he was never a goal threat. He’s probably worthy of another season in the Championship but I think everyone knows his Premier League days are behind him.

Weghorst- 6 - improved our ball retention at the top end of the pitch markedly but still not the goal threat we needed, and that failure to connect with Barnes’ cross summed up his time with us. If he’s with us next season then will be the time to judge him, but it’s equally likely he’ll be back off to Europe and this sorry 6 months put behind him.

Lennon - 5 - he didn’t do loads but I thought he added a little bit of spark down the right.

Well, loads has gone wrong this season- recruitment, injuries at key times (what I’d have given for the calming presence of Mee today), luck here and there (not least what happened at Brentford today, meaning we needed the highest points total in recent years to survive due to freak circumstances). But in the end we’ve not been good enough and the limitations of the squad were laid bare again today.

But I agree completely with Lancaster - we’ll never know but all of that might have been redeemed had we not over-thought team selection today and moved away from what worked so effectively in the first few home games of a Jackson’s tenure. Roberts is not a right winger and playing him there looked an odd move in theory and never redeemed itself in practice. Playing Collins at right back looked odd and it took him an hour to look comfortable in the role. All of this to accommodate a centre back who is a fine servant but barely good enough at this level. Meanwhile McNeil was shunted into the cul-de-sac which has undermined him all season and Cornet forced up front into a role that has never suited him and it was no surprise both players improved after the break when their roles were revised. After getting joy from slotting round pegs in round holes and creating combinations that worked in his first few games, this reversion to sticking square pegs in those same pegs was bewildering. As it was we failed to lay a glove on an ordinary Newcastle side for an hour and by that point the mountain was too steep.

Burnley were always too small to survive forever in this league so today was always going to come. But the finances resulting from the highly suspect takeover mean the prospects for the club bouncing back or even prospering at Championship level are less certain then they were. There’s a lot to sort out now this summer - starting with a manager and back room team - but before any of it, the Chairman owes supporters a proper explanation of his plans and how they will be financed given the insinuations in the accounts. Those explanations are crucial to ensuring the club sticks together during the months to come.

Pope 6 has been incredible for us, don’t expect to see him next season
Roberts 6 poor defensively
Collins 5 two off for unbelievable handball
Tarks 7 farewell to the best centre back I have seen in a Claret shirt in my 70 years watching Burnley
Long 6 tried but not enough
Taylor 5 poor game today
Cork 5 we need a new midfield
Brownhill 4 we need a new midfield
Cornet 7 he needs service
Barnes 4 any PL team with Barnes as a striker will get relegated
McNeil 4 needs a new club

Weghorst 6 there is a footballer in there somewhere
Lennon 3 get rid and take all the other over the hill players with him

Poor from the management team today, a defensive set up with no effort or desire for the first 70 minutes. Newcastle fought us off the park for most of the game, we capitulated so early.

We went out today, with not much more than a bum-chuckle.
Given the lack of investment in the squad since we qualified for Europe, guess it had to happen.
Personally think the core of our squad have, alongside SD, performed bigger miracles than they maybe should have.

Not quite a 'London Bridge' sale, but guess there's an American out there who'll buy anything.
Even if, with Garlicks consent, they don't actually have the money to do so.
The really worrying thing is, what happens next...........?
Cant help to be worried about our clubs future...

"Burnley were always too small to survive forever in this league so today was always going to come. Those explanations are crucial to ensuring the club sticks together during the months to come."

I've had plenty of runs in with Spice on here and the previous msg board, I don't think I've ever agreed with much he has posted, I rarely post anymore however I have logged into to totally agree with this paragraph.

Pope 7
Collins 6 thought he played well, the stupid handball apart
Tarks 7
Long 7
Taylor 6
Roberts 6
Cork 6
Brownhill 4
McNeil 5
Cornet 6
Barnes 5

Weghorst 6
Lennon 6

Wrong team, definitely wrong set up. In a game we needed to win we created nothing first half. Truly shocking.
Second half only slightly better, but Newcastle were cruising.

Second to all the loose balls, Second in the tackles. They looked like they wanted it more than us, which is barely forgivable.

There is a lot riding on the decisions over the next 2 months.

Pope 6
Roberts 4 no idea why he was taken off
Collins 3 awful, seriously what was he doing with the handball?
Tark 4
Long 5
Taylor 3 took him 70 minutes to finally whip a cross in
Cork 5 poor
Brownhill 3 just awful
Mcneil 4 quiet
Cornet 8 gave **** all chance
Barnes 4 up against a 6ft 7 CB with the ball always in the air

Agree with every mark.

Our midfield were none existent today and it resulted in long balls to Barnes up against the tallest CB in the league.

Time caught up with us today.

Pope 7 player of the season for me

Roberts 4
Collins 5 why ?
Long 6
Tarks 7
Taylor 4

McNeil 6
Brownhill 4
Cork 7

Barnes 6
Cornet 6
Weghorst 7

Why we didn't start with Wout up front with Cornet and Lennon wide left to attack the game is a mystery to me.
We just reverted to Dyches old tactics and found the same result.
Roll on next season.

Tragically (and it is a tragedy, some people live for this and nothing else), it caught up with Jackson today. He came so close to a miracle but in the end it is little better than 8 defeats. I agree that he over-thought it, should have played a 442 with Weghorst in for Long. Long was only playing due to Tarky’s injury, now JT is back it should have been the side that played Wolves and Southampton, more or less. He will regret that to his dying day. As will we. But good effort over 8 games.

Newcastle showed in the last 30 that when we put them under the pump they were hanging on, but we were too passive and seemed like we played for a draw earlier. We were so unlucky, Cork off the line, Wout by a whisker, Brentford having their goalscorer booked twice by Tierney (who also gave a pen) in two minutes after the goal.

So it was always a game we had to take on, and tragically, we only realised too late what some of us suspected this morning.

The nerves got the better of them. No lack of effort, a distinct lack of quality. Interesting to see how many of the current squad have played their last game for us

Gutted, the formation was not right to start with. Very passive in 1st half, too many misplaced passes. An awful penalty to give away and from then on we were chasing the game. We put Newcastle under pressure in the final 20 minutes, but even then we were not playing the type of football that brought us the results against Saints & Wolves. So I feel that we left the Prem with a whimper instead of a bang.

All the best to Pope & Tarkowski.
A big Summer of rebuilding awaits (I'm hoping). Need to hear now from the Chairman on the way ahead, ClaretSpice - your post earlier on on this is spot on.
